Pops and bangs

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I’m hoping I’ve put this in the right place, I am not used to forums.

As of this coming Sunday I will be the owner of a 2007 Skoda Fabia 1.2 HTP

I am not particularly mechanically minded but have been informed that I would be able to achieve a “pop and bang” effect by having a remap for this only.

My mate has suggested this would be a bad idea because of the small engine size and has said I may be better off straight piping it (not something I wanted to do)

As of current I am very confused and wanted to know if this would be possible (and safe!) without upgrading anything performance wise as this is my first car and do not want to raise the insurance

again apologies if this is in the incorrect place...

with many thanks in advance for any help greatly appreciated

(P.S. am expecting people to try and persuade me against doing this, any and every view will be appreciated!)

No, you have been misinformed, the car you're getting does NOT have a turbo and cannot be remapped. You can fit a straight pipe but I guarantee you'll be pulled over by plod the first time you drive it and hit with points and a fine.

Stop talking to mouth breathing retards, put petrol in it and just drive it. No mods.

do not want to raise the insurance "

the insurance company may refuse cover if modified away from standard, they will not pay out if the car has been modified after you've told them it's standard. It could be that mods would void the MOT too.

Driving like a knob and wanting pops and bangs will eventually result in raised insurance, that much is for sure.

And rightly so.

Noooooooo, I thought this was a safe haven from the asbo pop and bang map nonsense that is rife in the focus st world.

Completely understand that, my mates drive like knobs and I can’t say I enjoy being in the car with them, I will have a black box anyway so this isn’t how I will be driving, I was just curious because one of my mates has a 1.2 litre petrol polo that pops and bangs without performing upgrades with the performance. It does not happen when he drives erratically, just in general. As I said, I don’t understand too much about it it’s just something I’ve always wanted and wished to understand more about.

Completely agree that if I was to drive like that it should up my insurance

Also wish to add that nothing would be modified on the car without stating as I fully understand the risks of not being payed out in the event of an accident

I could have written this clearer as I meant to add that one of my mates has a 1.2 Volkswagen Polo that has not been straight piped that achieves a similar effect - I was aware that mine does not have a turbo however was misinformed as you said and told that a remap for pop and bangs only was possible.
Definitely going to do a hard pass on the straight through, not good for the environment and definitely don’t want to be pulled over all the time, many thanks for the response :)

Am receiving quite a bit of dislike about this which is pretty much what I expected haha, I feel like I wrote this more in the sense of “this is what I want to do” as opposed to “what if”. I meant to pose the question as more of a “how does/would this work”

He has a hole in his exhaust.

The ECU in your car cannot be reprogrammed, it's not flashable so no remap is possible.

Your mate has a hole in his exhaust, it will fail the MOT on it and plod could hit him with a defect rectification notice.

Many thanks, understand it a lot better now, very much appreciated 👍🏻

@FabiaMan16 - Well, that's fairly definitive (except that you might still be able to fit an interceptor tuning box, which would cost about £100 for each extra HP you'd get, and that's before any change in insurance).

The only ways you'd get pops and bangs are with a hole in the exhaust and/or an extra injector wasting petrol by firing it into the exhaust downpipe before the catalytic converter, and doing that risks a big bill for a destroyed cat!

YW, a word from the wise, do not do anything to your car which would attract attention from your local constabulary, they will do all they can to spoil your fun and keeping a low profile is the smartest option by far.

Just pour some Rice Krispies into the fuel tank 😁

Pour some pop corn into the exhaust and let it get hot. Butter or caramel goes in the tank.
