Just be totally sure the starter is at fault. They rarely go wrong. The fault is normally a break in the single wire that goes down to the starter solenoid.

Have you checked the wire? A brand new starter motor won't help at all if the solenoid isn't getting energised because the wire is breaking/broken.  It's an extremely common fault, especially on

  • Yes I was its Ok thanks for replying.

I can't see a part number anywhere on that in the photo or in the listing on ebay?? It's this one, right: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SKODA-FABIA-1-9-DIESEL-STARTER-MOTOR-2000/352718225223?fits=Car+Make%3ASkoda|Model%3AFabia+I|Cars+Year%3A2000&hash=item521fa4ff47:g:-XMAAOSwHqddKN~B ?

If you don't check the wire and it is broken, you'll have spent money on a filthy old starter motor for nothing.

Why not take the photo you said you were going to so we can help you locate the wire?

I'll pop outside and take a photo of the one on my car to give you a starting point.

Yes that is the one. Cheers mate.

It's this wire I think, try giving it some gentle movement if you can get a hand to it, to check if it just breaks off:

Right. Thanks I will do that when I finish.

Hi. I am getting this message but the part number matches up. The last two digits cannot be seen because of rust, I am assured by whom? that it is the same part as I have sent pictures. Any advice?

Should I check the wire first again? this has been recommended a few times.

Sorry Faz, but I am surprised you are getting any more replies without firstly confirming that you actually do need a new starter motor, ie that the wire is fine.

I've literally just posted pictures up as I don't know where the wire is. Once I've checked it I'll post which is what I should have done before. Thanks

Yeah you posted the pics just after I posted asking for the photos, which was unfortunate.  I edited my post to tone down that comment, feel free to edit your quote of my pre-edit post if you want to tidy up!

I think you'll find there's a black PVC sleeve over the wire, try pulling that back a bit away from the connector to get a better view/feel of the actual wire where it goes into the cable-entry of that connector with the wire release 'ears'.

Take a close up photo of that point with flash on if you can get the phone in there. :)

Is that picture face on or upside down? I have tugged at a few wires in this picture I am posting now and nothing is falling off it feels pretty secure.

The one I put the arrow on is your picture, but it looks like you had the phone turned so that it  looks like you're sitting on top of the engine looking forwards towards the front of the car and downwards.  So the radiator fan is at the top of the picture, battery box on the left out of shot.

In this latest picture of yours above, I don't see the same items, maybe it's been taken further across away from the battery?

I will now go and take a few pics or a short video on my car to try to show you more clearly.

The video makes it much easier than any of my attempts at photo sequences.

As I move in closer, I move part of the the gear selector mechanism aside with my torch to show the connector and wire better.  There will be some differences on your car (for a start mine is a Polo so the headlights are different), but it will be in exactly the same position within the engine compartment.

Right thanks yeh that latest picture I took is under the engine a bit further to the left. I'll take another look tomorrow. Appreciate your help

Have you been able to watch the video? You have to mouse/cursor over the bottom of the image before the play button appears on my laptop.

  • Author

Hi. Yes I have managed to watch the video very helpful. There are more wires and pipes near my engine so getting my beefy hands in there is difficult.

If any other readers with an ASY-code (1.9SDI) engine can describe visibility of theirs, ideally with a photo, that would be awesome.

A starter with the part number 02T911023H is the same item whatever vehicle it has come from.

No different to working on a 1.9 TDI really on that side of the bay. Take the battery out, take the battery box out. Wedge the battery back in, hook it up, run a hot wire from battery + to the solenoid. If it drops, it's probably faulty solenoid wire. If you can start the car, it's definitely faulty wire.

Thanks @StevesTruck, but I don't think the OP was likely to do any work himself judging by his comments.

I was just trying to get him to a point where he could put a finger or two on the wire to see if it broke away easily. If it did he could forget about replacing the starter and focus on getting an autoelectrician to repair the wire.

  • Author

Hi. Yes I am not doing any work myself. Am I putting my finger on the correct wire? It is slightly loose.

Thanks TMB. Thankfully I have had help from my old man taking the original starter motor out. The circled wire was not loose. However, the starter motor is definitely the issue as I had problems starting it on Sunday so I went to the scrap yard today and got one taken off another Fabia.

Unfortunately the diameter of the circular plate the cog fits on is too big. So I have to return this. I took loads of pictures to post on here but they are too big to upload too.

Anyone know how I can check if a starter motor is working without refitting it? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks

Just replace the solenoid, the motor is generally fine unless it's burnt out from being stuck on while the engines running.

Thanks sepulchrave. Would this be bought new? If so from where? Plus how would I take this out? I have a Haynes manual I hope its in there.

Thanks

Solenoid is held on with these three screws...

And remove this nut to free wire ring terminal...

It really is that simple, do you still need a Haynes manual?
