Diesel Monte's 2001 Skoda Fabia "Project vRSDI"

Set about getting this fired up this evening.

Had a bit more work to do than I realised, biggest headache out of this whole thing was fitting the return properly. Mounted it to the turbo at first but found out it needs to be fitted to the block first, THEN you need to somehow slip a gasket onto the piece connected to the turbo and tighten all up.

Must have took 40 minutes to just sort that out. Nearly gave up there it was that bad.

20220928_204834.thumb.jpg.5b0193f0faf9c56ae8f15d9c99852123.jpg

Pushed through, changed the oil, got the downpipe on and gave it a few cranks to build oil pressure.

I pulled the fuse for the "diesel computer", fuse 14 on this, so it would crank but not fire.

Seriously good battery on this, same battery that came with it all I did was charge it.

Made sure to record the first start up

Died after a few seconds seemingly run out of fuel.

After cranking it a bit more it fired again and stayed on this time. Changing the fuel filter must have got air in somewhere.

Gave it a few revs even, found where the popcorn limiter is on it

Not brave enough to let it pop and bang away just yet.

Didn't even move it under its own power but I was happy to leave it there for tonight.

Extremely impressed at how healthy that engine sounds, given the miles and having bought It with a grenaded turbo.

I'll take it for a few laps next day.

So finally took it for its first spin outside in a long time. It runs, and drives. Had an issue where it died, not sure if it's the battery that was in it (very possible) or a charging issue. Wel

  • So had to put it aside for a while due to ongoing work in the shed. But I now have functional pit lights, and better overhead lights. New injector loom, new cam sensor, no luck. G

  • Never ending pain. Timing belt and water pump done. Little drama here, water pump was poor so well I changed it, no clue when it was last changed so atleast I'll be starting from "now"

Boosting well, gear changes are superb.

Still open downpipe, had a look under it and I wasn't bothered trying to get the exhaust back together this evening.

If anyone knows what backbox this is, or what company this sticker belongs to, I'd love to know

I'd say you're right on the money actually. Seems to be decent reviews for longline exhausts, so must be a decent enough company.

Got the exhaust sort of back together.

Was a pig, and the absolute hack job of a backbox mount failed so had to hang it with zip ties after this video was taken.

It's remarkably quiet to be honest, not complaining. Doesn't look pretty here but it's not dragging the ground so It'll do.

Not sure if I should or not.

I think I'll throw MOT on it and run it as a beater through the winter, but the shell on this is rough enough that I don't want to keep it long term. Once the shell goes I still want to reshell it into my mk1.

Bit more on the vrs.

Noticed its got solid cupra bushes in

See a few spots on the bedliner where it's not perfectly straight. Will do it again.

Whole car will need a heavy cut and buff, and wetsand in and around where its been painted.

The outside of this is more or less back together now.

Fogs aren't plugged in but they're bust anyway. Few other odds and ends need sorting, big one being an interior.

20221010_193626.thumb.jpg.7fb05afb1c63495cbe16fb4d1a5d0330.jpg

Engine runs very well, very smoky on pulls, whether that'll clear out or not I'm not entirely sure.

I think I may try for mot on this, beat on it through the winter. Would be nice to have a spare car for a while.

Also, I might have another car coming my way, a non-skoda project. Not a big project by any stretch but I wanted to see the vrs "done" before I get this new car.

I have it got but I don't want to spill until I get it home.

What I will say is, it's a barn find, is very rare as most of them have rotten away and it's a prime candidate to take to FOTU next year.

37000 miles, one owner, like new inside and out.

Been in a garage since 2010

Drove home.

Needs very little, tyres and a full service.

Gonna start a thread for it in the non-skoda section methinks

Wow that's an amazing find!

Takes me back to the early 90s when my mate had an impreza (non turbo sport but still a cracking car at the time)

Presumably 1.2 fwd given no button on the gearstick?

Worse!

It's a 1l Carbureted FWD SL model.

It is an absolute basic basic model, was bought new from my work in 1992.

It's not one of the cool 4wd ones but I don't really care either.

The first owner passed away and it sat in the garage until recently. Was going to be scrapped but I thought that would be an absolute shame, so I bought it.

Ouch...  A our 50bhp then...   Still a cracking find though, pretty robust and at 37k only just run in

You laugh but there was a record setting justy that was 1l and fwd, albeit pretty highly modified from that.

https://www.autoweek.com/news/a2107096/1988-1989-subaru-justy-lsr-salted-scooby/

I bought this car to enjoy, not abuse like my fabias.

But, If nothing else this car is the lightest version of a justy by far. If I wanted to I think I could coax a few more ponies out of this fairly easily.
