Rim Size Compatability

Featured Replies

During this quarantine i took the liberty of thinking of some mods to do for my Fabia, the more reasonable option was a new set of rims as my current Torino's are housing my winter tires. While shopping i kinda hit a wall, what rim dimensions can i choose?

I wasn't thinking anything crazy, current spec rims are 5x100, 7j ET46. Now i found some rims that are 5x100, 7,5j and are available in ET35, 40, 45, 48. I used https://www.willtheyfit.com/ and it seems like the best option would be ET40. Today i took some half-assed measurements and it looks like there shouldn't be any issues fitting them on vanilla. Has anyone mounted wider than 7" rims on a Fabia and have you encountered issues? IIRC I've seen a Fabia here with 8" rims but maybe i'm missing something.

@Dannyboy85 has fitted 18" 8J wheels to his. Can't remember what his offsets were, he is running coilovers too, so i'm unsure what that'd give clearance wise to the standard shocks/springs.

Well that seems promising, i was also considering lowering the car but if that makes the tire rub it wouldn't be worth it. @Dannyboy85 If you could enlighten me I'd be grateful!

To keep the same internal clearance as stock wheels (and be safe with stock suspension), a 7.5J rim would want to be ET40, and for 8J it would want an offset of ET33.

For the outside of the wheel however, an 8J wheel with ET33 would stick out as much as putting a 26mm spacer would on the standard 7J wheels. That's quite a big push out!

Ill take a look at the clearance on mine tomorrow as it is currently stock, to see how far back in it could go.

Ideally, to stay flush/under the arch, don't want to be pushing out by much more than 15mm. Any further out than that can you risk damaging the tyres and arch when doing sharp corners or going over speed bumps or bad roads.

Since i was mainly looking at 7,5j and not 8j this does seem to be the best choice, 0,4mm closer on the inside and 12,4mm farther on the outside for ET40. Let me know!

Have you managed to get a chance to look at the clearence?

@steslatt Have you had any clearence issues with your 8j ET42s? Are they mounted vanilla?

No issues at all, yes just mounted standard.

Great to hear, so you don't think i should have any issues mounting 7,5j ET40s? Maybe even pushing to 8j?

17x7J OE alloys with ET46 offset. Stock suspension.

Thanks! I have a hard time judging the distance but that seems reaaally close. I have no idea how steslatt was able to mount 8j ET42s, that must be more than 9mm then.

I think I'll pull the trigger on some EtaBeta EROS in 7,5jx17 ET36, they seem to fit fine!

I think its around 13-14mm, I was able to get my pinky finger past the gap but nothing more without it being a squeeze, haven't got anything to properly measure it though. Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tyres. Other tyres might not stick out quite so much (avons being one that doesn't stick out much).
