3 Adults in the back?

Featured Replies

Hi, I had an Octavia when kids were small. Thinking of retuning to one now, so hoping some of you kind folks will share your view / opinions of the comfort with 3 adults (two grown kids and Grandma in my case) in the back seat? I have an Astra right now and it's too much of a squeeze when we have to do it..

I've had 3 adults sitting comfortably in the back of my previous car a Vrs245 hatch but if you have the space to park it they will be your best friend forever if you buy the Superb instead (and as a bonus the boot grows from 590 Octavia hatch to 625 litres in the Superb hatch).

Thanks. That's certainly worth a thought / look.

For short journeys OK, long ones a bit of a squeeze. Particularly as most grandmother I know or have known expected a bit of comfort 😉

had 3 in the back of my car and my shortest mate is 5ft10 and the tallest is 6ft5.

I'm 6ft3 and even with the seat where I need it, still plenty of space for the rear right passenger.

I’ve driven our Octavia estate to the south of France with 2 tall adults in the back, no problems whatsoever. 3 is probably going to be cosy. If you’re going to take 3 regularly get a Superb, the rear seat space and legroom is awesome on them. In fact they put BMW and Mercedes to shame.

Thanks, useful thoughts.

As long as it's hand baggage size, you'll be fine...

Just watch out for the centre headrest if the back seat has a 'ski' portal because that headrest is incapable of being raised to a safe or comfortable adult level.

Well that is the case in our mk3 Octavai estate.

Cheers for Gerrycan mentioning the rear centre headrest height adjustment -- or lack of it when associated with the 'ski' portal.

Today, I had three up for the first time in the back of my 2019 Octavia hatchback.  I tried to raise the rear centre headrest to a safe height but failed.  Could not work out why for the life of me.   Will double check the situation tomorrow...

I think ultimately, the leg length is fine, it's the width that'll determine it.

The car has a longer wheelbase than a golf, but is the same width.

Basically, depends how wide the adults in question are, as to how comfortable they'll be.

It is a while since I last tried to adjust the centre headrest but I remember concluding at the time that ski portal would severely restrict the length of the headrest legs, compared to the normal rear seats. Three adults in the back is practical for short trips  but I would not recommend it for any real distance purely because of the centre headrest.

In terms of seat width then @Alex-W is right of course in that comfort for three it is relative to their combined "width" but the Octavia/Golf does sacrifice a fair bit of available passenger width for side impact safety. Note the distance from the seat edge to beyond the sill when either front or rear door is open. I'm reminded of that each time I watch elderly (infirm) relatives struggle to access or leave the car.

Well ... I double checked the situation today.  Yup, sure enough, the ski portal access-cum-armrest takes up the space where the headrest anchor bars would normally go.  So, it means my Octavia hatch is a four seater, with an occasional use of the rear centre seat.
