Creaking Tailgate Struts

Featured Replies

Hi all anyone had this ? Seems to happen more when the weather is warm. Warranty runs out in October so would rather have it sorted sooner if it's a developing problem .... No apparent leakage.

Cheers

Normal mate, mine are the same.

I had the same issue in my previous 2016 Passat 140TDI Highline Wagon.
VW replaced under warranty with no issues.

Drive Unit - Part No. 3G9827851C should be the latest revision.

The Drive Units (Struts) on my Alltrack are pretty quiet, although my Superb is starting the get the "old Diesel rattle", might have to get that looked at in the next service...

FWIW It sounds to me more like an issue with the mounting points/bearings rather than the strut.

Sheesh! I wish mine were that quiet; they sound like they’re about to dismantle themselves! Was told they’re fine by Transcity a few weeks ago, but I’ll get a second opinion now, if yours are classified as noisy!

Mine make a rubbery creaking sound when opening and closing, the motor is pretty quiet and it works fine. Skoda looked at it for me under warranty and basically said NOPE

Mine made more of a chattering noise and I got mine both replaced under a 3rd party warranty from vertu motors. The work was carried out by skoda Maidstone. Value was over £1000 so I was lucky I guess.

If it gets any worse i'll take it in. Cooled down a bit now though and sound vanished.

A THOUSAND POUNDS??? For two electric struts?? That is feckin ridiculous!

Yes, completely daft. It's the parts the cost the money. The labour was nothing really. They around 500 quid each. I had to pay then claim it back but the skoda dealership phoned and talked to the warranty Company before they did the work.

They were £352 each us labour and vat 1032 quid all in

I've had the same problem on my 66 plate Superb hatch, both struts replaced under warranty by the main Skoda dealer without any fuss

My reaction exactly. I am stupid with money, fact, but in that scenario I’d take after my Dad - use a wooden broom handle for the rest of ownership 😂 sod paying that.....

Mine have stopped working on my 2016 model although they never made any noise.  I am not prepared to pay £700 for a function that will only last a few years so will investigate replacement with gas struts

Did they make the same sound as mine ? Was it all the time or just when hot ?

What where the symptoms S_F ? Did it just happen or over a period ?

It worked fine for the last 6 months, then one day it opened and would not close; we manually closed it.  Using fob, or buttons, will still unlock it but it only open a few inches.   My plan is to access the cables, disconnect them and see what warnings come up.  If none then I will replace them with gas struts .

I'd say mine sounded worse, it progressed over a period of time and just steadily got worse.

If you’ve had your car serviced within the dealer network, I’d’ve gone nuts at SUK about that. They should never have failed within 4 years. They’ve probably only been operated a couple of hundred times. Absolutely appalling. There’s a life expectation for a part like that which should, in reality, be the life of the car.

Damn! Not good. Hope my 2018 SEL doesn't develop this problem, I'm ultra low mileage and this is meant to be my (last) car for the next 20 years, so won't be covered by warranty for many "common issues"

It seemed to be a very common issue with previous Superb 2, looks as if Skoda hasn't learnt anything and still buy from the cheapest crappy supplier for certain items (eg rear brake discs). Or maybe thats the plan, get the money later.

I had my reservations about ordering an SEL spec. Powered tailgate is something I definitely would have unticked if possible. Who the F really needs a powered tailgate?

Then again, I ticked DCC so may regret that if it needs a new shocker in the future.

Cars have become far too complex.

Well, to be fair to Skoda, I’ve noticed a MK7 Golf R in our road and that has the same rusty rear disc issue as our MKIII, so VAG are instrumental in the purchasing decisions, which is the way it should be as the parent company.

Mine totally silent again now so must have just been the very hot weather maybe the oil thinning ? Tailgate must have been through at least 8000 cycles of opening and closing. Would I choose eclectic tailgate again  if it was an option ? Definitely.

Would I have it fixed at £1k  if it failed ? Yes. Car out of warranty in October and will be 5 years old. Still looks brand new inside and out when clean and only just coming up on 28k miles. Finished paying for it 2 years ago so it doesn't owe me anything  and I intend to keep it going until I cant.

It's such a fantastic car why would I want to spend another £35k plus on another ?

Mine ain’t. Sound like a mobile iron foundry!
