Featured Replies

See this is a common problem .... Mines done it a few times now in the last couple of weeks. Latest this morning. Fired email off to dealer will post back what happens.

New gear selector required.  Good luck.

Booked in. Out of interest can anyone tell me if a logged fault would still be present after say 3 weeks ?

I had this thing on my VW Golf 7, it's a common issue for VW DSG's, and it should be fixed/replaced since it is a warranty case.

This is definitely a warranty case.

I got it done when mine was out of warranty and paid 50% of the labour, they paid the other half and the price of the part which is not cheap!

The fault may go away but it will come back.

It's a design "feature" of the dsg shifter mechanism. One of the reasons they are moving to less mechanical shifters like the new Octavia and golf.

Thanks all. Well just done it again but this time instead of just flashing up on the dash and vanishing I had a yellow exclamation and a warning in the Columbus with the message. This was great as I could take a picture of it :-)

The amazing thing is it's a faulty switch which probably costs a few pence but they have to change the whole unit.

I did wonder if they send the unit back and it gets refurbished. If they do it's a good money maker

Would not be surprised. I’ve not looked because I’m in warranty but there must be someone out there who can strip the unit and replace the switch.

Check out page 13 of the Octavia thread.

The fix is now to add a piggy back switch fitted onto the shift lever instead of ripping the stick and mech out. Instruction TPI there too.

Car been at dealers all day where it was established that yes indeedi the job needs doing.... Guess they didn’t believe my pictures of the error on the Columbus ! Book in again please ... Oh and apparently the stick and mech will be ripped out so I guess not a micro switch change ....

I have owned a Superb since new in December 2015.  I have now started getting this message so will presumably have to get it fixed.  It is obviously a fault that Skoda/VW have been aware of for some years but I am well out of warranty so will have to pay for the repair even though the car has done just over 50,000 miles.  I have always used a local company for servicing as I expected exorbitant prices from Skoda.  From repair records of anyone who has had the job done could you tell me how the fault/repair is described so that I can ask my local garage for a price for repair?  What have Skoda charged?  Many thanks.

if it's a simple microswitch replacement is it possible within the realms of a competent DIY spannerman?

Just asking out of interest really as microswitches tend to be industry standard sizes and I've replaced many in things as varied as computer mice to electric showers...

On page 14 of the Octavia thread there is a posting by a user who did the fix successfully himself. The latest fix involves an additional switch rather than a replacement. With no more than 1 hour of labour being required, I would suggest going to an independent garage if I you are at all unsure about your competence.

Occasionally I see the error message flashing up in my car, but it was not an issue when the car went in for MOT last week.

Before you pay for it contact Skoda support. Mine was just out of warranty and they paid for the part and 50% of the labour.

It is a known fault and they will contribute if you push them.

I had to get it diagnosed by a Skoda Service station before they would consider it.

As above! 3 months out of warranty. SUK paid part and half of labour

Sorry didnt update the thread .... Apparently the who unit was replaced not just the switch.

I have now had this problem fixed by my "local" Skoda dealer.  It was described as a faulty gear selector lever and the part was provided free of charge but I had to pay 3/4 of the labour charge coming to a total of £148.50.  Skoda paid for the remaining 1/4 and might have paid more but apparently they took "brand loyalty" into account and this was the first time that I had put my car in a Skoda garage since new nearly 5 years ago.  However, it took 4 trips to sort this out. One to identify the problem, the second to fit the replacement part that was then found to be defective, the third to fit the 2nd replacement part and the fourth to remedy the problem with the 2nd part.  Rather frustrating but at least it is working for the moment.  My car was 20 months outside warranty but this was recognised as a common fault, hence the generosity of Skoda!!!  Thanks for all comments.

Good deal. I took the extra 2 years warranty at purchase and its probably paid for itself at least twice over maybe more.
