Another steering problem - Groan!

Featured Replies

I know there are loads of threads about steering issues on here so forgive me.

Daughter's 2008 Fabia 1.4 Diesel has the power steering warning light come on after driving for a short while. No loss of power steering and if you switch off, light clears for a while and then around we go again.

Been in the garage today and they have found Codes:

00816 - Power steering sensor open circuit/short - intermittent

01317 - Control module in instrument cluster no communication - intermittent

They are suggesting to live with it for now but that the pump may be on it's way out. New pump supplied and fitted £432.

Any advice folks? Thanks

...Have you also checked (Or had them check) The fluid level? Often gets overlooked as you need to remove the battery on most variants, to get to the pump cover and check the level.

Additionally, these cars are quite prone to having faults develop if the battery is weak so be sure to have a healthy, well charged strong unit.

Hmm, not sure they checked the fluid. Reckon I'll get the spanners out myself and have a look. The battery has been a bit flaky too, thanks for the heads up 👍😁

I'd take on board the battery health seriously, maybe even get it checked somewhere as well as making sure that the "not charging" light is on when the key is moved to the "on" position, then goes out as soon as the car starts.

00816 refers to the G250 sensor, This most likely needs replacing.

Not been able to look at the car until today. I thought it would be straightforward to remove the battery and tray. Didn't realise there are connections running off the top and down the front of the battery. How do I remove those so I can get the tray out? Thanks

It's the sensor, don't bother tearing the car apart to top up fluid that isn't leaking, a low fluid level doesn't put the warning lamp on and you have a definitive fault code, the sensor is much cheaper than the pump, take it to a different garage.

That's what I needed to hear, thanks 👍

6Q1423291 is the part number for the steering angle sensor (G250)

Here is a link to the sensor (but get a garage to order as they will be able to get it cheaper probably) - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Steering-Angle-Sensor-6Q1423291/174335825892?epid=22037609170&hash=item28973997e4:g:6MIAAOSwDmBeumON

This link will show you where its located - https://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/fabia-mk2/chassis/steering/electric/electronic_components_and_fitting_locations/

Many thanks, any idea on labour time for this?

From reading around on here its a under car job to replace but it seems fairly simple. I would estimate 30-1 hours labour minimum but I am no mechanic. - Sensor at around £120 and labour @ £100 ish, I would expect a bill of around £200-250! :) BUT get the battery checked before you sink money into the sensor as it could well be the battery on its way out.

My car had a tendency to throw a brake fault error when the battery started dying.

Booked in to a local VAG specialist. Let's see what he reckons 🙂

By way of update, looks like it was a problem with one of the connectors.
