DSG arrow

Featured Replies

Hello,

I anticipate this question has never been asked because I'm a bit of a newbie to cars etc and people probably already know the answer.

At the risk of making myself look stupid....

But can somebody tell me what does the downward pointing arrow mean on my DSG gear lever below "drive" (see below picture) And what does it do? I'm scared to try it out without knowing 😬

As I say, I'm new, so apologies if that's a eye roller of a question!

Cheers,

Pulling the lever down swaps between normal and sport modes. Moving it to the left allows manual gear changing.

 Ahh brill. Thanks!!

I knew about the knocking to the left allowing manual mode.

But didn't know about the sport being accessible from down!

Cheers for your reply!

...and once you done that, perversely you need to pull it back to change back to 'normal'!

It all makes sense now!!

If you don't know it is not a stupid question

I work in a pretty technical job where I train people on unique equipment. The rule is theres no stupid questions, and if you have to ask you're probably not on your own! It isn't self explanatory to be fair!

  • 6 years later...

I have driven two varieties of this lever arrangement;

  • pull to alternate between drive and sport. Lever returns to D/S position

  • two positions D and S. Lever stays in selected position

My current DSG has (I think) four modes: Economy, Drive, Sport and User defined which offers steering and A/C settings too 🤪

The Lever can only select between two of these, the others need an advanced degree in menu navigation.

I use mine to switch between slightly annoying burble mode, and a mildly terrifying growl. 😬

Those are not DSG modes they are vehicle modes, which is why they include settings for steering weight, AC mode, etc.

The DSG only has Eco (earlier shift points and coasting on trailing throttle), Drive ("normal") and Sport (later shift points).

Although you can only change between D and S (and manual, of course), as the coasting and such is part of the Eco setting for the whole car.

I drive long journeys in eco sometimes, although my car has the coasting mapped out.

I stopped using Eco mode as the lack of engine braking when coasting meant I was using the brakes more - it made no measurable difference to mpg but used more brakes, so it seems to me like Eco mode will increase running costs without decreasing emissions?

I've done the same. With the engine braking effect I feel more in control.

It should re-engage the clutches the second you apply any meaningful braking. It’s also a bit of a placebo effect - these engines don’t have any CoD/ACT, and all eco mode really does for the engine is reduce the effect your throttle input has. As in, it’s nothing on the engine side of things - it’s all in the throttle pedal/ECU. In all these cars, normal mode means 30% throttle input is 30% throttle. In “sport” mode, 30% input is 40% throttle, and then in eco, 30% input is 20% throttle. I often find cars respond unbearably slowly in eco modes, and the same effect can be had with driving more carefully in any other mode.

That's the problem, with the clutches disengaged there's no engine braking - so the only way to decelerate is by using the brakes, which means you use the brakes more as you're using them from a higher speed.

Since I measured no improvement in mpg in Eco all Eco did was increase brake usage, and hence wear and cost. So for me Eco was increasing my running costs, with no reduction in CO2 emissions and an increase in PM2.5 emissions from greater brake usage. Kinda makes Eco not really Eco?
