Winter wheel size

Featured Replies

What are the recommended wheel an tyre for winter?

Reading the handbook it says you can only use snow chains on 16” 7j wheels with 215/60 tyres? Hence the car must be able to fit 16” wheels?

My car has 19” wheels but could I use the set of 16” wheels and winter tyres that I have from my previous Yeti?

In the handbook it say cars with 19” wheels use a spacer and this has to be added if upgrading a car with smaller wheels? What is this?

My son has my previous Yeti 215x60x16”  winter wheels and has used them for the past 2 winters on his 1.5 Tsi Karoq Edition that normally rides on 19” wheels, and no spacers that you mention.

19” summer and 17” winter on my Kodiaq.

All good. No mods needed.

Daft question but what type are those?  Rapids?

Do you really need snow chains? From memory they are a pain unless you have to drive on packed snow as they wear rapidly if used on cleared tarmac. (At least the old metal ones did.)

If you're thinking of driving mainly on gritted and cleared roads then I've found winter tyres (on a set of winter wheels for ease of changing) quite sufficient for recent winters. And I'm now more inclined to fit all-season tyres and just stay at home in blizzard conditions :)

No I would never use snow chains myself, but the handbook says chains can only be used for 16” wheels, hence wondered if my Yeti 16” winter wheels and tyres would fit

Why smaller wheels for winter tyres, is it just cost saving?

I think I'd at least get some 18" wheels for mine over the winter.

The Karoq online manual says 6J:

smaller = cheaper = far more choice of tyre

And some favour narrower for better grip in snow.

Some might spend very little time on snow of any depth that the can has clearance to continue in, so on unplouged / unpisted roads you are  maybe as well having good pattern / compound wider Snow / Winter / All-Weather / All Season tyres on.

If they have 4 or 5 months of their 'winter wheels & tyres' fitted in the UK even in the Highland and Country roads of which ever of the 4 countries they will be driving much of that in good conditions, or wet / cold and even scorchio weather.

If doing actual 'Offroad' driving or Greenroads, Vehicular Right of Ways, Rally Stages etc then thinking on narrower being better might apply.

OK... sorry I misunderstood the point you were making. :)

Was indeed, I got thrown a bit by the 17” for winters.  Still getting my head around the various Skoda wheels that can be used on Karoq.  I’ve managed to get a set of Ratikons for winters but am struggling to get two more rims so I have a spare for Summers and a spare for winters.  You can never have enough wheels. 👍

True.

I have checked and my Yeti winter wheels are 215/60R16 with 6j steel rims, offset et43, so exactly correct to use on the Karoq. Indeed it lists this wheel and tyre size on the filler flap as an option.

All the tyres still have 8mm tread left after 2 winters use so should last a few more winters. How deep would the tread have been when new? I know they are supposed to be replaced at 4mm left.

I thought from previous posts in a different thread, it was established that the Yeti 16" wheels had a different offset - can't remember what - & that it was risky using them on the Karoq.  Maybe I misunderstood.

I do have a set of rather nice 'Rial' matt black 16" wheels from my previous Yeti - fitted with Cross Climates that have a fair amount of wear left   They're in a cellar that I can't get to for a week or so - I was going to try to sell them, or if not, scrap them.  It would be great if I could use them on the Karoq.

Actually just found the invoice from late 2016.  They're 6.5 x 16  ET33 - maybe the 6 x 16s were also an option for the Yeti.  For me, looks like it's back to plan A + I'll buy some steel 6 x 16s in a year's time - pity.

ET33 is the wrong offset for a Yeti, as well as the Karoq.
