How long does it take for your car to get up to temperature?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

So I have a Skoda 2.0 tdi dsg and as the weather gets colder then understandably it takes longer for the engine to get up to temp, but I am worried it’s taking too long and will damage my engine. On really cold days (last winter) it can take up to 10 miles to get up to 90 degrees, although once there it sits bang on 90 for the rest of the journey.

It may be a stuck open thermostat which I can replace but I thought I’d ask on here first to see if its normal as it’s a dsg so sits at low revs, and all the roads near me are 50mph roads where the engine sits around 1500rpm with not many hills.

Does this seem overly long for my engine to warm up?

Thanks.

It sounds a bit long to me. I rarely pay any attention to the temperature gauge though - I prefer to go by the oil temperature. That is usually up around 85 *C for me within 10 km which is reasonable (I think). The DSG has a second thermostat which is known to fail and leads to longer warmup times. Do a search around here, it's come up a few times.

Ok thanks 😊

To @tommygards - It is not normal. Change the "DSG"-thermostat..

I'm up to 90 dregrees within 4-5 mins.

May vary as we approach winter though (and like others, once set at 90 degrees it stays there all day).

Ok thanks. That a big job? I think there are other threads on that topic already.

Plenty of threads. I did mine following one. Mahle part from Autodoc, dirt cheap.

To @tommygards - I think - it is easy job. There is no difficult and complicated operations. It is about unscrew/screw few bolts and two or three water clamps (here You will need handy and right tools). If you find tutorials - I suggest that half of an hour will be enough :)

Thanks all.

Changed DSG thermostat and all sorted, car heats up a lot quicker now. I tested the old one and it was still operating but wouldn’t fully close like the new one does.

Only thing I will say is that I ordered a mahle original from autodoc which was more expensive and the one I received had the manufacturer and serial numbers filed off so I’m not convinced I didn’t get a cheaper copy...

That doesn't sound right.

'Manufacturer and serial number filed off' - who supplied this part? sounds like a Friday night special!

It’s been a couple of years maybe since I used them and I received Mahle part in a proper box from Autodoc. I followed the footsteps of others on here. Maybe you should have complained rather than fit it, could have been a mix up or a customer return home wrong?  However that said the part has resolved your issue so can’t be all bad?

yeh the part works fine and looks fine, I just don’t like paying money for a genuine part and potentially getting a cheaper copy that’s all. The difference in price wasn’t worth me complaining or putting the car back together with the old broken part, I just wanted to let people know in the future to be aware if you buy from autodoc. 😊

May just be some good advice after years of good service they may be supplying substandard parts or pattern parts with no branding as you may have found. We all know Mahle has been associated with supplying various VAG parts over the years.
