Bumping noise when turning?

Featured Replies

My Mk3 Octavia 1.6TDi SE (63 Plate) makes a strange bump noise when turning whilst driving 10MPH or less. I can't begin to understand what it is...

MOT brings nothing up, drives perfectly fine, can't get the car to purposely make the noise, allowing the wheels to drop off a curb doesn't make the noise so I want to rule the suspension out, when driving over 10MPH I can't get it to do it, snaking the car again no noise so again I want to rule out alignment or ball joint issue?

The noise mainly occurs when turning left and the acoustic of it feels like it's coming from the front left arch but I know that car acoustics can be incredibly misleading.

Anyone else experienced this or know what it could be? It can be loud sometimes and bugs the hell out of me.

Could it not be the constant velocity joint in the drive shaft? You get a knocking sound from those when turning left or right at slow speed especially on full lock? If the gaiter isn’t split, it may not get picked up in a MOT? They can dry out after time.

This sounds incredibly logical and could well be it, I'll get in contact with my warranty provider on the car and see what they say. I'll update you.

Brake disc backplate corroded and mountings fractured.

Would this not be picked up by an MOT?

Yes but it could fracture the very next day even without showing any outward signs of corrosion, they engaged the best scientific minds know to man to develop the rigid brittle tin foil like material.

Great point too, it could have happened directly after the MOT. Why is everything such a cash grab when it comes to how things are made? The £200+ skoda SD cards a are a great example when you can find them much cheaper elsewhere.

On a wide, flat area (empty car park?) try turning tight circles in both directions at relatively slow speed - often get the CV joint noise on one lock only.

Let’s us know how you get on!

Will do.

Could be wheel bearings. I had noticed the noise initially on left turns. Before it worsen to right turn.

New wheel bearings fixed it all
