i would say when I had my box on, my fuel economy was around the same.

 

Only thing I noticed was the amount of regens the car appeared to increase, especially active ones. Since removing the box, they appear to have calmed down. Can only assume it was due to the additional fuelling.

Errr not really

 

You can see a 8 to 12% increase in bhp with the same car in higher gears. Run a car in 3rd then run the same car, same day in 5th & you'll see a more powerful figure. Always when looking at a dyno printout check the mph, its a tell tale sign.

From one of your posts you see to not be aware of Switchable maps.

I used a couple of tuning boxes on my old Ibiza TDi.

The first tuning box used a hose to detect airflow amongst other connections, and was quite on/off in power delivery. It was a pain when trying to cruise on the motorway so I complained and they sent a replacement that was all electric connections, and that worked a treat on my 90BHP TDI.

I also had a remap from Angel Tuning on my Mondeo TDCI. That was very good from my perspective, but it was an off the shelf map, not a custom map.

I think people are a bit confused between remaps, and custom maps.

A remap where a car is tuned, then those tuning settings are recorded and programmed into other similar vehicles, is an off-the-shelf remap.

A custom map is going to be unique to a particular vehicle, and to do that is likely to be expensive and take a few hours setting up and tuning.

I'm happy to concede that a custom map may use an off the shelf map which is then tweaked after installation to suit the a specific car and the customer's preference.

But a straight remap and then a "Ta-dah!" rolling road confirmation of power gains is not a custom remap, IMO.

 

For the record, I was happy with both the tuning box and the remap in the different vehicles. They did the job I wanted and didn't cause any problems, however simple the tuning box was internally.

The benefit of the tuning box is that it has a resale value after use.

The point is, be prepared to pay £1000+ for actual rolling Road time and a genuine CUSTOM map. A tuning box will give you what a flash map will, but with the added bonus of being able to fine tune it a minimum of 28 times. Thus, in theory, 28 different maps. All of which you can monitor and figure out the best combination if you have 2 neurons interconnected and a smartphone

 

Also, I declared my tuning box, a DTUK one and it cost me £9 extra on my premium..

I have no idea where you're getting your figures from but my Map is custom ( changes to AFR/ injection cycles / boost pressure)  I know this was done because I saw it,  this was also backed up by 7 dyno runs over the space of 3.5 hours  this cost is nowhere near £1000+ infact it wasn't even half that.  It might be worth being better informed before commenting.

Tuning boxes have their place (for me that place is the bin) but each to their own and sometimes it might make sense.

 

 

To the OP

The point of the original post was about longevity really, if you want something reliable long term(not saying tuning boxes can't be) and getting the absolute best go for a remap,  ideally one designed on the dyno for you from someone who knows what their doing with a solid reputation. 

Mines a different engine but running 230/450nm covering many thousand miles now and it's fine my MPG went up, it's a better car to drive and loads of fun.
