Display Blank on Media Unit

Featured Replies

Only bought the car from a main dealer recently (2 months ago) - 2014 Mk3 TFSI vRS

Not even sure what model of screen it is (see photo).  It has DAB, Nav and Car information.

I have searched the internet for solutions but nothing has worked.  It was fine and then suddenly went off yesterday and will not turn on.  My steering wheel can still control the audio options and I can see them on the maxidot - i.e. change stations, inputs etc - but I can't see any of the screens car information or change modes or toggle anything on or off.  The volume control still works - and I think the screen is registering inputs because I heard a bing when I touched something on the screen - god knows what I've pushed....

None of the buttons will produce any picture.

I have tried:

Pulling Radio Fuse & Touchscreen Fuse under glove box.  In engine I have tried pulling Canbus fuse.  Does nothing.

I have held Power for 30 seconds.  Does nothing.

I have clicked the Res button under the display. Does nothing.

So firstly can anyone tell me what model of Entertainment system this is - and further anyone got any fixes....  I wary about the dealer ripping me off.

Thanks in advance

Not seen a screen like that before with the map and res bits.  Also the font looks slightly thicker than standard.  I suspect its an aftermarket screen or even a standalone unit.  What do you have in the glovebox?  A pic would help identify it.

Edit:  Also original screens tend to say NAV not NAVI.

Hi - it's DVD/CD player I think - I've not used it.  I'll get a photo.

The glovebox unit is the main headunit.  The screen is usually just a screen.  Bit like a PC and monitor setup.  There are different models of unit.  I would suggest that the screen is not original and identifying the main unit will help with this.

Thanks for your help.

Here's the bit in the glove box.

That could be a mib1 bolero. In which case the screen does not match as it is too big.

@SashaGrace any idea what's going on here?

That’s a MIB1 Bolero in the glovebox. Screen is aftermarket so I couldn’t say what’s up. Take the screen out and see what’s what. Is the ‘screen’ a standalone unit or is there some connection to the radio?

Hi - thanks for helping.  I've ordered some removal keys so will have to wait.

If the screen is faulty does anyone in the UK fix them?

Thanks

This is how it should look behind the screen.  Best bet is to find some removal tools to pull the screen out and compare.

Since it's an aftermarket screen take a look at the labels on it when you've got it out, then we'll all stand a chance of knowing what it is.

I'm wondering if a previous owner fitted a different screen along with a "black box" for either navigation or DVD playing or WHY?

I imagine your best bet is to find the correct screen for the unit as not being an OEM screen you will find it hard to get it repaired.  Unless you can get it working yourself and happy to use it of course.

Hi SashaGrace, the screen controlled the radio and inputs etc - although I can still use the Maxidot via Steering Wheel controls to change these settings.  The main thing I can't change now are all the car settings like Mode that were available from that screen.  Luckily I had the car in Individual mode anyway so it's not causing any issues as I had the car setup how I wanted anyway.

I wonder what happens if the screen goes in a Tesla.... would it even drive.   It's annoying enough with this car that once the screen goes you lose some functionality - but thankfully it's not the 'only' way to control it!

From factory the screen and radio are separate units. Some of these aftermarket screens have a bridge between the old radio and the screen, some plug direct into the old radio loom and the radio you have now is just in the glovebox as a placeholder and isn’t connected to anything. The screen you have is an Android based one so I would suggest that you try to get a cheap Bolero screen, plug your old radio back in abs see what you have, isolate the issue to the Skoda stuff or the aftermarket stuff. Looks like the aftermarket radio has just given up.

Finally got some keys to pull it out.

Going a fuse behind it but it's fine.

Screen still blank.

Searched the internet and that model does not come up anywhere... Bit odd.

Sorry to keep posting but can I just buy a cheap Android 10 unit and swap it over?  Will I still be able to see the car information and menus?

You may be able to find a model that could work. You also may have a faulty connection somewhere.

Having a think about it you should probably find out if the main unit in the car still works. Easiest way is to find someone with the correct screen and see if you can match up the plugs somehow in your car to get it to show something. Problem with that is you clearly has non-stock cabling so unless you are happy pushing/pulling cables to the right location..... Try pulling the glovebox unit to see what is plugged in there. That's a good starting point to see what is plugged in to what.

Edit:

Sorry, didn't mean for that to be so long.

Yeah it looks nothing like the normal connector - but that might work in my favour if it those connectors fit in a standard cheap Android unit.

Anyway I've actually found these guys not too far from me...

https://www.car-audiomedics.co.uk/

So hopefully they can just fix the screen.  I really don't use the actual unit for anything other than DAB but even could get away with not using that as I have everything on my phone.  The Nav is completely useless in my opinion and out of date from the moment it was installed - I can't see why anyone would use anything other Google Maps - so my phone is fine for that.  Also I use my phone via Bluetooth for Streaming music - so don't really want a complete new system.  The screen really is used just for changing options in car that I can't access from anywhere else.

I'll look at removing the glovebox part but and see what is connected anyway.

Hi

A bit of an update to this....  I contacted Car Audio Medics and they informed me that the unit is a cheap Chinese copy and they have no access to spares or replacement parts - so it's finished.

I sent this information to Skoda and asked them what they are going to do about it - as when they sold the car to me, they told me the system was an 'upgraded' model...

Anyway, after some 'discussion', they are going to replace the unit - with genuine parts.

Can someone tell me what model I should be getting and ask for because I still want the Bluetooth and DAB to work - or do all the models do that?  I don't want them to fob me off with some crappy old model.

I'm quite happy to pay some money towards an upgraded version if its going to be noticeably better than whatever they offer me.

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

BTW - car is 2014 vRS MkIII.

Factory (or dealer) upgrades are quite expensive I think. Best bet is to take their offer of original system and then follow the advice on here for upgrade route to mib2 if you want more. If they are willing to upgrade you to mib2 for <£500 I would take it. As that year did not come with mib2 I doubt they will.

Mib1 systems:

-Bolero (your system): small screen, no nav

-Amundsen: mid size screen, with nav

-Columbus: big screen, nav, + other bits like hard drive for music

I think all have dab and Bluetooth.

Thanks for your help!

Glovebox unit looks like my MIB1 Bolero which has Bluetooth but no DAB.
