Superb 2.0 TSi - 220 / 280 differnces?

Became a member about 12 years ago (when i had a PD230 Mk.4 ibiza, which is the same engine and floor pan as a Fabia VRS), then had an Audi A5 (never owning an Audi again:mad:)

Currently driving a 335bhp stage 2 Mk.2 Leon Cupra , but need a bigger car for my ever growing 3 kids, so i'm looking at buying a Mk.3 Superb in the near future and i really like the look of the 4x4 dsg 2.0 TSi version!

I note there is a 220ps and a 280ps version. is the difference between the 2 just ecu mapping  (as a Stage 1 remap would be inevitable ;))   or are there hardware differences; intake, FMIC, exhaust or engine internals?

Any info greatly appreciated:thumbup:

Cheers, Andy

(I did use the search but couldn't easily find anything on this..)

just realised .....   my original account was back then, but lost the login details... new account is only 2 years old and this was my first post

220 isn't 4x4. Aside from that some more experienced users will be able to inform.

I don't think there is anything in the spec that is different. Main thing will be engine in some way. Maybe fueling.

The 220 is basically the golf gti engine and the 280 is the golf r engine.

220 uses smaller turbo has a few different engine internals so although you can map it to about 280hp, you can map the 280 to 350hp or more.

Just get the 280 4x4 unless you have a loyalty scheme with a tyre shop (wheelspin!)

As @KeteCantek said there are differences between 220 and 280 versions. But the real gamechanger is 4x4, Superb is too long and heavy for  220+ hp on FWD, so there is no question: get a 280!

The 280 has a bigger turbo, and produces more power at high revs.   The outputs are very similar at normal revs (below about 3000)

The 280 is heavier with the 4wd system.

Like all high power variants, get skinny tyres, which might tighten steering feel for driver, but is going to do nothing for the limousine comfort of all those passengers which is your reason for buying it.

If budget is tight then go for the 6 speed DSG 280 and as the guys say just a stage 1 map should give you a minimum 360bhp and 500nm with 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds which is better than a stage 2 FWD Leon can manage. If your budget can stretch to over £20,000 the 4WD 272 which I bought last December has the latest 7 speed DQ381 gearbox which reduces motorway revs to 2,000rpm (70mph) and will use less fuel than the 280. Both 272 and 280 share the same excellent Golf R vented brakes 340mm front and 310mm rear which mean even my car's 360bhp doesn't require a BBK (brake kit upgrade) IMHO. Traction even in the wet is crazy effective and I can't believe I didn't switch to 4wd YEARS AGO.;)

272ps 4x4 has

1. another turbine
2. bigger brake discs
3. visible exhaust pipes
4. lot more pleasure of driving in winter

Having gone from a (2017) 220 with 6 speed DSG (DQ250) to a (2020) 272 with 7 speed DSG (DQ381)...

1. At lower (normal driving) engine revs there's little difference in the engines, but the 272 goes like a rocket if you really boot it

2. The DQ381 7 speed DSG makes a difference -- first gear is lower (quicker takeoff from standstill), top gear is higher (lower revs/quieter/better economy when cruising), changes are smoother

3. 4WD makes a *big* difference -- trying to pull out quickly (especially in the wet) was always a gamble in the 220 (wheelspin/banging galore), no such issue in the 272

The 280 would be the same except for #2 since it has the same 6 speed box as the 220.

On the 220 I had very occasional cases (probably no more than a couple of times a year) where the box didn't pick the right gear or paused (white-knuckle moments) when pulling away, usually after having just stopped (or almost stopped). The 272 seems less prone to this but I've only had it just over a year and have only driven half my usual annual mileage so this could be an illusion...

I hadnt realised the 4x4 was only on the 280, thanks for that heads up as i'd not picked that up

Knowing the differences in the TFSI engines, thats the info i was hoping for!

Thanks all for your comments and guidance, i'm definitely only looking for a 280/272 now!!

There is allot of comparisons made between the 280 and 272.

In reality they are as quick as each other, what the 272 lacks in power it makes the deficit back with the 7 speed gearbox.

I run a 280.  The slightly higher revs at cruise speed is not noticeable as the engine is quiet and refined.

You don't have a "gpf" on the 280 where as the 272 has one.

The 280 has a valved exhaust where as the 272 does not.

The 280 runs x8 fuel injectors to the 272 x4.

There are not many 280's around second hand but loads of 272's.

I think the 280 will be more collectable in my opinion. Prices are almost the same.

I am having mine mapped soon with some additional parts fitted and looking to see 400bhp with a stage 2 map.

Back in February this year at 6,400 miles my completely standard 272 made 283bhp (287PS) on the rolling road with 369nm with no mods other than being run on Tesco Momentum. Skoda claim 268bhp and 350nm so perhaps someone could post the 280 on a rolling road with no mods to intake etc for comparison. The extra gear that the 272 has actually helps it accelerate quicker than the 280 also.:whew:
