Picking Fabia VRS estate up soon.

Featured Replies

Hi all new to the forum. I've brought a Fabia VRS estate 2012 with engine CHTE. I've been trawling the net and mainly seen people telling nightmare stories of engine and gear box failures especially from the earlier CAVE engine. Now is this like most reviewers only complaining about something when they've had problems? There aren't many good positive reviews is the because most people don't say anything when things are going well?

CAVE was a nightmare, CTHE should be ok.

Hope so. Fingers crossed.

Still some CAVES about mine 10 years old now, best to avoid if a lot of previous owners,

My 11 plate still going strong 🤞

@GUESTY

Welcome to the forum.

If you look you will see the positive threads even though over 20% of CAVE engines failed and then the early CTHE could also fail.

Best check your Warranty & Service History and see if the Early CTHE still has the Factory Engine fitted.

The real world is as well talked about because as far a VW is concerned it is overblown issues on Social Media / Forums.

No need to bury your head in the sand like VW do, forearmed is forwarned and you know what to look for.

Didn't realise about problems with the early CHTE engines. So what did they change on the Early CHTE engines that's different to the later CHTE engines?

The Software, because they had to delay the delivery of SEAT Ibiza Cupra in 2013 once they had started production again in 2013 and there were 'issues'.

Then strangely a member here got a early CTHE and they still did a Breather Mod and fitted the Oil Spray Jets when it used oil.

What is strange about that is how did it leave the factory without the Updated breathers that were being retro fitted for over a year before they stopped building the CAVE's.

Here is another one, not the one i meant.

EDIT, the bottom one is.

They did Breather Update and Squirters before then replacing the engine.

Bit ****ed off really the Fabia I've brought is a 62 plate so it will probably have the same problems as the CAVE engine then?

@GUESTY

I would hope not.

There are hundreds of good CAVE & CTHE's.

There are ones that were faulty that are fixed or have new engines as Skoda / VW had to fit hundreds of engines to under 3,000 Mk2 Fabia vRS in the UK.

Also do rebuilds and updates.

So find out the Skoda History for the first 3 years of its life.

There are not many CTHE Estates in the UK, and a good few have been owned by Briskoda members at some point.

?

Do you want to put up the Reg Number of the car you are getting?

There are some ones that were duff in the past, but they could be sorted now.

DA52FHD.

And thanks for your help e-Roottoot. It's got 42k on the clock. That's what attracted me to the car the estates being rare.

Sorry DA62FHD

?

Where are you buying from, is it a trader?

Go on the condition now and the low miles.

Checking what Discs and Tyres it got, and the first 3 years history and any more recent.

It maybe got treated better and looked after better in the last 9,000 miles / 18 months than before those.

Yeah from a trader. His getting it mot so I will have 12 months and putting a new tyre on. And service.

At least you will have your consumer rights if there is major faults.

Hopefully someone that can competently change the spark plugs will be servicing it.

Plenty issues occurred over the years even  when VW Trained Techs do them.

Brake Fluid change was due at 3 years and each 2 since.

Air Filter at 40,000 miles or as required when checked.

Pollen Filter each 2 years or sooner, at least checked and cleaned / vacuumed.

A fuel filter change should have been done.

I will be servicing the car twice a year like I have on my recent one. Air and pollen filter once a year and oil and oil filter twice in a year. Do you have to get the spark plugs changed at a garage then? I did it myself on my current car. When is the water pump do for changes?

@GUESTY  Why?   Do you do high miles in extreme climates?

The Water Pump and belts are due a change when it leaks or goes wrong.

You have the Spark Plugs changed at a garage if you are not doing them.

Someone has to change them.

Being sure the plugs are right is one of the major things to do with a Twincharger.

Supposedly 40,000 miles / 4 year change schedule. Some cars have 1 plug that might not last half that.

Yes I think that's the first thing I will do change the spark plugs just to make sure. Well better for the car more regular oil and filter changes you do. I know police cars are serviced twice a year. I will be doing about 8k a year.

You said the car is being Serviced, are they just changing the Oil & Filter?  That is not a service it is an Oil Change.

Police cars are serviced using tax payers money, and were K&N filters might be used they get binned at a service.

You are not driving a Police car,

Fabia vRS are fine with regular checks and consumables replaced as needed.

Wasting money on perfectly good oil. or filters being replaced seems so silly when there are things that are worth spending on.

The correct plugs, correct consumables like the oil and Super Unleaded.

Brakes serviced regularly and good tyres and suspension parts.

  • Author

Not sure what they are doing when they are servicing it. They probably will just do the oil and filter I'm guessing. Is super unleaded a must then?

You can run it on 95 ron, but 97 ron at Sainsbury or 99 Tesco Momentum 99 is only £2.25 extra over their 95 ron and likely the same price a tank as Esso, Shell, BP, Gulf etc's 95 ron.

What car have you got root toot?

I have had Mk2 Fabia vRS and have one stored for the future with a nice engine ready to go in.

I am 3 points away from a ban so have an electric car with a 95 mph top speed and 0-60 quicker than a vRS..
