How to prevent windshield fogging up?

Featured Replies

With colder weather and more rain I've noticed front windshield fogging up quiet easily/badly - to the point I have to run the "defogging" (whatever its called) climate control program every several minutes while driving (which is annoying since it is very loud and not very fast at defogging) or else the front windshield is quite badly fogged up and visibility is severely compromised

Any tips as to how to avoid this? I don't have heated front windshield

Outside temps are 10C (50F) and it's raining most of the time, I keep in car temp at 20C (68F) with AC off (just on regular auto)

Turning on the fans that are located below the windshield helps (not the defogging program, but just having that up arrow button turned on), but not 100% and then I have weaker air flow to the back of the car (rear seats)

Its driving me mad :D

You haven't got the air recycling turned on have you? (That closes off the air intake and prevents fresh air - and smells - from outside the car, but will make the car mist up more quickly.)

If you also have the air-con turned off, turn that on as it dehumidifies the air (as well as cooling it in summer.) I always leave my climate control set to Auto Air Con for this reason. It prevents nasty smells and problems in the air con that can arise when it is turned off for long periods, and the effect on fuel consumption is pretty negligible.

As above keep the ac on 24/7 365.

Aircon needs to be used regularly otherwise the seals dry out.

Mine is on all year.

+2, I never turn the aircon off. (Never noticed any difference in fuel consumption either whilst trying driving with it on or off either)

Heated windscreen is a near essential for me as well. Wouldn't buy another car without. I had it years ago in several Fords, then went without for a superb and two Yetis. Third Yeti had it and brilliant. Now my Karoq has it and I have already had to use it this autumn.

As well as using all the correct settings to help the car from misting be sure to get it aired out when you can, leave no damp clothes, carpets etc in the car.

and have the interior glass well cleaned.

Pollen Filter replaced each 2 years or sooner.

As the weather gets colder then Dehumidifiers in the car and boot and maybe treat the glass with a product.

As above, I never switch the AC off.  Lots of peeps think AC is only for when it’s hot, it’s for all seasons.

If the car has accumulated damp (quite easy if you get in with wet coat) then put some moisture absorber balls in it to absorb the dampness, keep them in car.   If they lose effectiveness then they can usually be restored in a microwave oven.

Run the a/c all year as others have said, it has a dehumidifier

Whats the button for air recycling?

Also will keep AC turned on from now on (and will get something to absorb moisture), thanks for advice everyone

It is a picture of a car with a circular arrow shown within the car.

The air recirculate button is the 2nd from the right at the top of the picture. (With an icon showing a circular arrow in a car)

+1 on  keep the air con on.  Really does mean the difference between steaming up and not.

How does aircon reduce fogging in winter? Does it first cool the inlet air to dehumidify it, to finally warm it twice as much?

Yep

When the AC is disabled because the ambient temp is low you can still have no fogging of the screen or clear it without the assistance of the AC.

& with some EV's like with Heat Pumps the AC is not needed to de-mist the windscreen or stop it fogging up because you have 'Hot air' almost immediately blowing from the outlets with no need for the Engine or Coolant to heat.

sorry to hijack this thread.

just read that you have to have the AC on at all times, so how do you set this up?

press the AC button so it lights up and turn the temp knob to cold?

I just leave mine on the Auto setting throughout the year, with the internal temperature set to 21 or so.

Or set to Low, 16 or 18 or what ever you like the cars interior to be.

A cars temp set 21 degrees would have me needing to take off my vest

so i can set the temp knob to middle and i can still have AC on? i have always thought that to have AC on, i would have to turn the temp knob to coldest?

Try putting your heating / temp to the highest it goes and put on the A/C.

ok il do that later, shall i leave it like that for few minutes then put it back to medium?

Do what ever you desire.

I was only suggesting it is maybe easier for you to try than others to guess what happen with your car.

ok thank you

as long as it is ok to have ac on when i have heat on too :)
