Water in spare wheel well.

Featured Replies

So as above. Not washer hose. Anyone else had this. Very confused.

Usual suspects for any car would be tail lights, quarter light windows (estate) rubber grommets come loose or fallen out, especially if you have tower electrics. Ive even seen it coming in past seals for the fuel flap release and running down the inside of the quarter panel.

Best way is to remove everything from the boot so you can see the metal flooring, then use a garden hose to soak the car. start low and work your way up the car on one side and then the other. should give you an idea of which side and whether its leaking from a lower panel or higher up near the window line.

Hi

i have a superb mk3 sportline estate and I get water in the tyre well - not all the time but I checked recently and there was quite a bit. I have tried a hose test and yesterday I had my car in the garage (independent) and they spent 30 mins trying to find a leak with no joy. So like you I am stumped!

somewhere I read that it might be to do with the aircon/climate control but may be imagining it.

anyway it is very annoying so keen to know if anyone has solved this puzzle

I had this on a Ford Focus many years ago.

Ford tried resealing the rear qtrs, resealing the rear window etc etc.

It ended up being poor welding along a roof seam.

Luckily all covered by Ford.

So my car has been in to see a trusted mechanic a couple of times and now he is 99% sure it is solved and that water was coming in via the rear near side light cluster. Although the light unit looks ok and the foam seal was undamaged it simply wasn’t doing its job. There is a square gap where the wires come through but no seal of any sort. With all the trim inside removed and a wet day to test on, it was easy to see water draining down into the section behind the trim and also down into the tyre well.

the solution has been to add some extra foam to the seal and I initial testing has proved successful. It will be interesting to see the reduced condensation and a dryer boot.

washer hose like mine perhaps? the corrugated pipe was split in several places.

My daughter had the same problem in a Hyundai but that was the mice that lived in her car chewing through the washer hose. Her cars are always like wheelie bins, full of rubbish.

Mice are a problem though. They once chewed up and made a nest in the air filter of my BMW motorcycle whilst it was laid up for the winter.
