Octavia Mk IV irritations: poor LED lights and Auto hold traumas!

At last, an update! The car has been back to the dealers and I am pleased to say that they found faults on both the headlights and the auto hold, the latter with a fault logged in the car's memory. The dealers have been great and very professional. They have replaced the ONS headlight unit completely (manufacturing fault) and have corrected the logged fault on the auto hold. This seems much as it should be now but I will have to wait for a nighttime drive to check on the lights. This may be some way off whilst lockdown persists - I collected the car in the third week in September and have only covered 720 miles so far!

Anyway, thanks for the comments and advice.

That's great to hear. I had a 2017 Octavia first of the FL cars with standard halogen lights and they were absolutely dreadful.

I have to say I find the LED headlight dipped beams to be shockingly bad, almost dangerous, because the beam is thrown so low. I am certain there is a way of adjusting them manually by doing something under the bonnet BUT if you do then you will also affect the main beam headlights which will then be too high. i am appalled at the number of general search results I have found indicating how **** these headlights are, and based on the number I am surprised someone hasn't had the common sense to collate all the complaints about these frankly ****e headlights and take action or mention this to Skoda..

I've got the matrix LED and have felt for a long time that my headlights were crap. They don't illuminate very far on the road ahead and they dazzled other drivers when doing their active blanking thing. This has been confirmed (eventuallY) by the garage after months of complaining about them. They would just take them to an MOT test wall and say that they passed. It's only when I told them I wanted to reject the car that they actually took it for a night drive and confirmed the problem for themselves. They even took a VRS out the following evening to confirm that one was working correctly along the same route.

The icing on the cake though was when I had a call from Skoda and was told that although my headlights were blinding oncoming drivers, this wasn't a rejection issue as these are just "driver convenience" features. The £1600 option on my 5 month old car doesn't work but it doesn't sound like they want to do anything about it.

So, lets not  get carried away here , but fox 2319 said that he managed to contact skoda about the terrible headlights and they said that because he had the matrix headlights they were basically a toy  and not relevant even as a £1600 option. Bloody hell!!! If I  had paid £1600 for them I would want them to work better than standard headlights and not be fobbed off, as lighting is a safety issue, and a good reason to be able to reject the car, I know  this as i have just read the spec regarding Consumer Rights Act 2015, as a material safety concern. Go back to Skoda and tell them you want to reject on safety grounds if you  feel it is that bad, and then watch them squirm. I  have only  had my car for a few days and I do not  have the all singing or  dancing headlights just the standard led headlights, and i foresee me  rejecting the car if I cannot get or  have configured Auto High Beam..if that would make any difference.

I'm also in a bind as a rejection of my  car as they are hundreds of miles away in Rochdale.

You could also contact Ian at reject mycar.com, as I  have dealt with 2 very dodgy VW dealers who immediately backed down and started to play ball when i got Ian who owns the company to threaten them  with court action.

Cheers. I've been talking to them for a few months about this and gave them a letter last Friday saying that I'm rejecting it and they have 7 calendar days to respond (they've already had 2 chances to fix it so I don't need to give them another. (and btw, I'm livid about their attitude)

I'll have a look at that website thanks. I've got legal cover who'll step in if they don't play ball, they're the ones who told me to write them a letter with a specific time limit and the sections of the act to quote.

Bad news, I’m afraid. The car has been in the dealers all week as the auto hold has started playing up again big style. The resistance stopping me moving off after activation is unreal. The last time the dealer had the car they cured the issue with a software update but now things are even worse. The dealer has been very supportive, as ever, but they have tried two more updates which, to repeat their words, have made the issue worse!  They have contacted Skoda UK who have told them to replace some parts. Let’s see how it behaves when I get it back next week. For what its worth, whilst checking the car in I also asked them to register these additional issues:

My Iphone fails to connect automatically at least one in four times.

The Satnav only displays grid references and no street addresses after inputting a destination. Why couldn’t they stick to the version in Mark 3 which was great?

I have music on an SD card in one of the USB-C slots under the dash. On start up sometimes you hear music from the SD card and sometimes through Apple Play. It seems to choose at random.

The voice activation system kicks in for no reason and, even more irritatingly, when just chatting or singing along to a song in the car!

Not great, I’m sure you’ll agree. It is particularly galling as I only have this car as I rejected the last one for chronic kangarooing issues and was given this as a replacement. And it costs me more on a lease than the last one did!

Hope your dealer can get the Auto Hold sorted.

iPhone auto reconnection is a thing in my car too. I suspect (though haven’t validated it yet) that if I listen to the radio then turn off the ignition, my iPhone doesn’t auto reconnect next time; whereas if using CarPlay when turning off, it does. I’ll try to remember to check what I do each time...

With the voice activation, I have turned off the listen for activation phrase and just press the steering wheel button to activate it. Works surprisingly well for navigation etc in the car and for Siri (a long press)
