Hole in sump :-(

Featured Replies

Noticed a large pool of oil under car (Scout 4x4 2.0 CD TDI 2012), which hasn't been used a few days.  Checked dip stick and nothing showing!  Removed undertray and found a tiny hole in the sump.  No damage evident anywhere on the undertray or sump, and certainly haven't grounded it.

So, I have ordered a new sump from GSF (£45 with 60% discount).  It looks fairly straightforward to replace with not much in the way.

The questions are:

1.  Is there a gasket available for this model engine?  I cannot find one on the normal car part places, but it looks like there is one on there at the moment.  Any links?

2.  What could be the cause of the hole!!??

3.  Any tips for the replacement?  I can't drive it to the local garage so will need to do myself.

Thank you

Ive never done a sump on one of these but having done them before on other cars it may look like theres no oil in it but there will be enough to make a mess if your not ready. Dont forget to have rags handy... Also my old corsa was very sensitive to getting the right tourqe on the bolts. To little and it oooozed, to much and the gasket crushed and it ooozed.

Good luck!

Almost certainly silicone sealant instead of a physical gasket. Tell me your engine code and I could check which sealant is specified.

I think they use a squeezy silicone sealant now for the gasket, Once its all put back together remember to leave it overnight for the liquid gasket to cure then fill with oil etc.

Did you find the plug that came out of the hole?  If so (or by looking at the hole) can you tell from the angle and shape of the edges which way it came out (ie. pushed out or pushed in)?

I had mines replaced recently,my care is 12 years old and the sump had corroded.

£45 is a great price! I had mines done and the mechanic charged £95 for the sump alone.

Well having had a closer look at it yesterday, I am not sure I am willing to risk getting some of the securing bolts off (the couple at the front are obscured).  And on my back in the driveway in the thin smattering of snow is not that appealing.....

I had a quick chat with the local garage and they can do it on Tuesday, so I shall fill up the oil, and get it there to them to do.  He did say that the sump ordered would be paper thin, and better to fit an OEM one though.  So will cancel that and leave it to them to get an OEM one.

I am baffled by the hole though and how it happened.  There is no way a stone can reach that part, due to the undertray and the location of the hole, and it has not been grounded (100% certain).

Is there anyway a hole can be made from inside???

Can you get any more photos, it's really not clear to me from the earlier picture where on the sump this hole is.

If you fill up with oil is it not just going to pour straight back out again?

It is a very small hole, and just drips out. Garage is 2 miles.... Hopefully will make it....

Clean the area around it and gaffer tape it thoroughly. It's more about other road users and the 'death trail of slipperiness' than about whether the car makes it.

Oh yes, i hadn't thought of that. Thank you. I'll drain the remnants of oil and i have some metal putty ill jam in there.

Another thought, the hole is under the "fabric" cover that covers the sump and zero damage to that.  Its at the back of the sump.

Will make sure the garage have a good look inside when its off.

Well, an update.....

Garage took sump off and indeed it had been holed from the inside....a top of a tappet, got wedged between the bottom of the oil pump and pushed it out through the sump!

So....dismantled the top of the engine to see what's what.  All rockers, tappets and lifters in tact, so it must have been from a previous failure and missed when rebuilt (possible cambelt failure??).  They have checked as far as sensible for any more bits floating around in there but found nothing.  Putting a new cambelt on for good measure.

Awaiting the bill.....

FYI - 67k miles, 2012, ex Police vehicle with FSH.....
