How many miles do you roughly get between new tyre change?

 

My car is on the originals from new (registered March 16) and around 37k miles and still 4mm tread all round.

 

To me this seems good (comparing to previous cars), so i’m not sure if the superb is good on tyre usage or whether Pirelli P7’s are good as i’ve never used them before.

 

Only problem with mine is the edges are perishing slightly . I’ve heard if you don’t use the car a lot the edges can perish due to low usage and when you use it an oil or something is released to prevent it, sounds like BS to me though haha

I had the same kind of experience on my ex Superb Mk2, also fitted with P7 from new. Quite satisfied of these tyres at the beginning, I finally changed my mind after -30000 km. Reduced wearing indeed, but very downgraded grip in wet conditions. Just as efficient as a piece of soap in curves. I changed for 4 Michelin PS4 and it was night and day!

Same conclusion on my current Superb Mk3: not satisfied with original P7. I´am going to change for Michelin PS4 again, when spring has come.

Pirelli P7 Cinturato seem to wear very slowly, however they are very summer biased, and get hard and grip poorly in cold rain (below about +10c)

 

Pirelli have just launched a new all season tyre, Cinturato all season SF2, (snowflake2) as with any brand of all season much better suited to all year use in UK.  
 

However as a general warning, when an all season is added to the range, it tends to result in latest version of the summer tyre being optimised for more summer like temperatures nearer +10 to +40c.  Therefore latest summer tyres are poor choice for UK nowadays, as unsuitable for colder weather.

 

Confusingly Pirelli also make a P7 winter tyre so be careful with which ones you order, if you stick with Pirelli

 

@Danoid as we are now second half February, my suggestion is to put note on your calendar to change the tyres to all seasons in August / September when stocks are plentiful and prices usually cheaper.  Recent cold weather has killed stock and price offers.   My personal suggestion is either Goodyear vector 4season generation3 (G3) or Continental all season contact.   If your tyre are unusual size then Vredestein Quatrac Pro.  
 

I have the OEM P7s at 23k miles and have about 4mm all round except the front inners which I think might be at 3mm. Car is 4.5 years old.  Small surface cracks have appeared and I think it's about time to think about a change soon. 

I had my sportline 280 since new from may 2018 and tyres are still going strong at around 5mm all round. Did 18k so far altogether

About 3k miles from the last set of fronts, and it's a 4x4! Tyre place royally screwed up the alignment...

 

Anyway, I bought it on 32k miles and was wearing P7s on the rear with the year of manufacture matching the car, which seemed impressive. 

 

I'm hoping to get 15k miles out of this lot, they're Avon ZV7s which are sold as Summer Sports tyres, the sort of thing you'd fit to M3s, RS Audis etc, but the reviews aren't that kind to them in that sort of application as they don't handle continued high load / heat as well as the likes of Michelin Pilot Sports etc but they sound perfect for a Dad car with 19" wheels.

My Superb just failed the MOT because both front tyres (Pirelli P7) had split around the entire circumference on the inside edge after 25k miles, despite having plenty of tread left.

When the mechanic called his tyre supplier and told him he needed two tyres for a Superb MOT failure the guy immediately said, "P7's split around the inside edge, right".

So, the tyre dealers appear to know it's a problem.

Just goes to show the MoT test has too many areas which are open to interpretation. Our P7’s have 31,178 miles on them from new and they all have cracking around the outside edge of the tyre. Passed the MoT without an advisory 10 days and 34 miles ago, and they are very tough. In spite of protestations from another member recently, they still have at least 10k miles in them; no idea if they’ll start delaminating before then, but whoa betide Pirelli if that should happen.

The car is 2018 with 25k miles on the clock.

The failure is on the inside edge of the front tyres and looks like a deep jagged cut around the entire circumference, right on the edge of the main tread (along the line of cracks in the picture above, but on the inside edge).

The crack is so deep you can see the broken ends of the reinforcing wire. No problem with the rear tyres though, they are absolutely fine.

I had a P7 delaminate its thread whilst on a dyno and then blow out! 

Scary experience for the tuner, he's nerves were shot when he came out of the car! Luckily he's already bald! :D

Yeah, as you point out, your experience is far, far worse than mine. I’d be getting onto Pirelli about them TBH.

I doubt you would even get a reply from Pirelli. They are Italian after all, so expect the usual non-existent customer service. Pirelli have a long history of selling shoddy tyres, so are best avoided.

During the production of Mk2 Fabia vRS / Monte Carlo with 205/40 R 17 tyres in the UK there were many with 'Pulling Left' issues.

Lots of threads on this.

Search   Briskoda pulling left.  even recently there was a Pulling Right thread about a left hand drive car.

 

So after the owners were told, nothing wrong, we have tried to sort it, Skoda UK approved the fitting of Pirelli Zero Nero tyres which disguised the issue with the stronger sidewalls.

 

Dealership staff would blame the Dunlop SportMaxx, or Continentals that were the OEM fitment.

 

When asked if they were the issue and Skoda wanted to blame them then why were they still fitting them and were VW Group not talking to the Tyre Manufacturers.

 

Obviously they were not because actually the cars were wrong from the production line and the people at a Skoda Dealership that sorted the issue usually had the Audi Dealership with the gear and more than ideas sort them out.

 

Summer time for spirited driving, hillclimbs or the 1.4 mile i used Dunlop SportMaxx that were Take Offs from people getting Pirelli's fitted,

but the Dunlop Sportmax inside edge could very easily go as the tyres that were through to the core on here, even with a weekend of good fun on great driving roads. 

The sidewalls were easily wrecked on road ironwork.   

The Pirelli were very tough and had very crap traction.   Great for handbrake turns etc.

Well, I think I would. I got one from Vredestein when I had an issue with sidewall collapse and they paid compensation.

I purchased four new Pirelli tyres many years ago. The beads split on all four tyres when fitting and removing them from the rims. Pirelli didn't want to know.

That sort of cracking seems to be common on summer tyres that are used all year, including in cold weather.  UV rays are thought to contribute to the degrading which makes them hard and more brittle when cold.

 

However doesn’t seem to happen on tyres stored in a garage during winter, whilst winter tyres are on.  Haven’t heard of it happening to all season tyres either.


My experience of Pirelli P7s is seem to wear very slowly (likely to do 50k miles), but I do swap their locations each year when winter tyres taken off.   After 4 years I have no cracking (and I did use them first winter until I realised they are poor in cold rain, and vowed never again to treat them as all year tyres)
