How much for?

Featured Replies

A new sump.

I hit a bag late last night and it contained something that has taken a chunk out of my oil sump.

So any idea what the cost is likely to be? Do I need to sit down before reading it?

TIA

Provided you didn't drive too far with no oil it should in theory be a new sump (and a few bits) and fill the oil and drive off. Although being a modern car with fancy fangled doojameehicks it'll cost 9 billion shillings and an arm.

Ps. Sorry to hear about the issue. I don't want to come across as pointing and laughing.

I made it from Guildford to about ½ mile from home when the oil alarm went off, but was on a hill with a series of bends (all unlit), so wasn't in a position of safety, so I took it out of gear and let it coast downhill and through the bends into our village, as so not to stress the engine too much and then for the last ⅓ mile I used 2nd and 3rd to just get me to our drive and in.

Shut it down and then it started smoking and any remaining oil poured out.

Is it true that the sump on this is reinforced plastic or is it metal? I don't think its damaged the gearbox as it was working fine.

Quite a lot of the modern VAG engines are plastic sumps. Not sure on specific models. You "upgrade" to a metal one or reinforced undertrays.

Must have been quite a hit to go through the tray and bust the sump too.

I imagine the sump is somewhat sacrificial. Prob best to inspect as thoroughly as possible before even starting the engine again. Where there any unwanted noises or just smoke?

It sounded like it was gasping, no grinding or grating noises, but I did that little bit in about 3 mins. I hit it about 30 mph I thought that it was one of those builders bags that had blown into the road.

I don't know what was in that bag and I can't say what I'd like to do to the grubby 🤬 who put it there!

A warm engine, tickover downhill & then part throttle in 2nd & 3rd gear for 1/4 mile................

You will probably be OK especially if what you saw was remaining oil pouring out & not draining from the undertray. Hopefully the smoke was oil on the exhaust.

Did the engine sound tappetty while running? If not then you certainly had some oil circulation.

I expect you will need a new undertray as well as the sump, you might be really lucky and find that it was the level sensor that was damaged & not the sump

Yeah, that would be a good analogy of the engine noise. Only for about 60s though

There was about ¾-1ltr of oil on the floor when I stopped it. A bit more this morning.

I'm going to have to wait to see what the bill is before making the decision whether to go via insurance or not, because of the £400 excess. If it's >£1k then it would most certainly be an insurance claim.

Is this the answer to your problem, relatively cheap, and can't imagine it would be a hard thing to change.

I think mine has an alloy sump, I had to do the first oil change from the bottom (the 5/16" copper tube of my suction rig would not pass through the dipstick tube) had it been a plastic sump I would have thrown a rod before the engine had a chance to!

It got taken away yesterday on the back of a truck, taken to Lookers at Peasmarsh, no idea of how long it will be or anything.

I'm expecting a £500 bill.

Sorry to hear of the grief, and hope the bill is smaller than you fear.

The lesson being if you see a bag in the road DON'T run over it thinking it's just rubbish or empty. 🥺

Problem is, you don't often realise what it is until its too late! Or, the debris is much bigger than it first looked.

I've had similar with road kill, thought I would clear the remains only to hear a sizeable 'clonk'. Fortunately not had the problems you've experienced, but it can happen all too easily.

It's going to be an insurance job... £795!

That's if the engine isn't damaged, apparently it was running for a few miles without any oil in it, as the oil was sprayed from front to back, also it has done minor damage to the front lower spoiler too.

If its damaged the engine, then £7895 for a new one! But I think that will be Lookers trying it on and I'll be having an independent assessment done to make sure.

Very sorry to hear that. Hope you can get the money back from insurance! But, it is a big headache :crying:

Just got the excess to pay £350. So it's at least a £445 saving doing it via insurance.

Until next renewal when the robbers will stick your insurance premium up 🤬

Got 10 years protected NCB. It probably will go up as I'm due a new car in the next year. TBQH I'll be glad to see the back of this car, it seems to be absolutely jinxed. From electrical and OBC gremlins to this.

Haven't decided what it'll be yet, Skoda, BMW, VW, Jaguar are all possibilities.

Maybe a new engine could attract the right buyer knowing that there are minimal miles on the power plant?

I've read with interest your troubles with this car and think if I had had a quarter of the problems you have had I would have gone back to a bicycle. The real problem here is if you are unfortunate enough to buy a lemon it remains a lemon. I hope your next vehicle, whatever make, is a lot more satisfactory.

Good luck.

Big mistake, you just dont know it yet, biggest insurance scam ever, your premium will rise whilst you retain the ephemeral NCD, going elsewhere for a quote you will find that you no longer have an NCB and a claim against you.

A £100 sump is costing you £350 to save a notional £445 which you will pay for in increased premiums.

OTOH if it needs a new engine and if the insurers pay.........................

I pay extra to protect my NCB, it does transfer between insurance companies I know that as I've transferred it in the past, including when I cancelled a policy mid term after Lloyd's Bank insurance tried to wriggle out of a claim, got a ruling against them via the ombudsman (I had to concede 2 years NCB).

If they don't pay then the car will be scrapped.

Insurance costs increasing after making a claim, is sadly just a fact of life.

A deer in Kings Forest took out my Pug 308 on 1/1/2020. What a way to start the year! That deer is still affecting the premiums on both our cars now, nothing I can do about it. At least Mrs W and me were ok. It's only tin and rubber.

Oh yeah, I appreciate that, my insurance has increased year on year and I pay that little extra to protect my NCB, which is a bit like robbing Peter to pay Paul.

But if the worst comes to the worst, then I won't lose my NCB completely, I will still have some left.
