Annoying rattle/noise - not sure where its coming from!

Featured Replies

My Octy VRS has developed an annoying sound which I can only describe as a rattle, like some bit of the interior or something within one of storage areas is rattling away. Thing is, I am not sure if its coming from the interior of the car or outside, underneath the engine area! Probably a long shot, but Is any common areas of rattles that are known on the mk3 octavia's? Or could this be something lose on perhaps the under tray?

Oh its worth mentioning that sound can only be heard when driving over un-even/bumpy rough roads at slow speeds, this is where you can hear the sound.

Thanks for that, thats a right list of things to check! I'm still leaning towards it being something under the car but could be wrong. Its just so difficult to pin point where the sound is coming from.

Ah not just me then. Got an annoying rattle from somewhere under the steering wheel and a high pitched buzz from somewhere on the passenger side front. Really frustrating.

Check the Calipers and the brake pads.

My rattle (which I'm in the process of trying to rectify) are both the front driver and passenger seatbelt adjuster slider parts. On both of them, there's a gap of about 2mm which needs to be filled in. Looking at possibly just using a bit of tape to make the sliding part a bit thicker and fit more snug in the guide.

I bought a roll of one inch wide, sticky-backed foam tape. The foam is about 3mm thick. I cut a section off the roll of about an inch by half an inch, removed the backing, carefully posted it in the gap and pressed it down using the adjuster. No more rattles. Ten minute fix. Hurrah!

Having been out in mine earlier today, it sounds as if its coming from under the steering wheel or centre dash! More a vibration than a rattle if that makes sense but could be classed as a rattle too I guess. I wonder if its the fuel lines under the car.

A rattle from under the car sounds exhaust related.  Make sure that all of the rubbers are properly seated and that the DPF / Cat is not loose - ditto silencers.

After hunting around for an annoying rattle in mine I found that it was coming from my passenger A pillar.

Removed and re-fitted and it’s been fine since.

Sometimes my dash rattles around the instrument cluster but I just give it a push and all is good again.

Yeah, will get all of the above checked when I get chance to take the car into my local mechanics.

Gave the passenger side adjuster a poke today and couldn't believe how flimsy it is! No wonder it can rattle. Nothing seemed loose though I could poke it in and out of the b pillar with ease.

I'm 99.9% sure the passenger side seat belt adjuster is rattling on mine. But I can't seem to fathom how. Was the gap on yours at the top or bottom of the slider?
