ACC misbehaving

Featured Replies

So, I'm enjoying the ACC on my new Octavia as I've not had this before, and even with a manual box it's very useful.

However, I had a few (4-5) occasions last week during 2-3 journeys where I was on a dual carriageway, was in the right hand lane to overtake a slower vehicle and the ACC 'locked on' to the vehicle in the left lane (eg showed up as a white car not grey on the display), and braked my car as I was about to overtake - not ideal when there's someone behind you - and I only noticed due to the sudden deceleration.  It's the same as it would do if I was in the left lane and a car in the right lane was going slower, so it stops you undertaking, so all I can think that for some reason it forgets which side I can overtake on!

Not sure if it's linked but I also had intermittent Park distance (or something like that) control errors at this time, however the parking sensors were fine when I parked up.

Didn't have the issue on a similar journey today so will have to keep an eye on it, just wondering if anyone has had similar?

And it is surprising how lightly you need to press the accelerator to override the AI; the indicator light in the Virtual Cockpit changes colour when on ‘manual override’.

  • Maybe it is another UK glitch related with you driving on the wrong side of the road (this is after all a german car :-) ) and the car didn't think you were overtaking and got confused...

  • I also have this issue. The car slows when overtaking as it detects the car on the left.  My previous superb never did this.

I'd report it to the dealer in writing and ask them to investigate.

Hi all , my Superb  used to do that and if i remember correct , if you tell the dealer they need to look at a radar re-alignment and its not as i remember covered in warranty. Maybe changed now. My Superb would do that behaviour all the time. I got used to it and kept my foot hovering over the pedal incase of breaking and to bypass the ACC

I would have though by now this was ironed out

How could that possibly not be covered under warranty on a Brand new car?
(Point being made in the context of OP’s situation rather than your Superb situation)

I just seem to remember if you went ahead with that work they needed to take the radar off and it can be put out of alignment very easily by say a football hitting the radar plate on the grill. I remember someone on the Superb forum saying £800 and not covered on warranty. Seems daft to me and that thread was nearly 3 years ago , so i may have it wrong.

Sounds like a good reason not to get Adaptive Cruise to me :)

A lot of high end cars are being written off because the cost of reprogramming/aligning and repairing all the forward and rear facing warning systems/radar stacks up pretty quickly.

I do wonder if they can be easily removed and programmed out as picking up a scrap L&K with accident damage and just fitting it without the driver accessories (assuming a lower spec car can be purchased like that) could be a great way to get a cheap car.

I imagine there are plenty of dealers keen to undertake work “not covered under warranty”.
I wasn’t doubting your past experience, merely dismayed that they could charge for that work.

I’ve been very disappointed by the ACC, it does get confused when overtaking on motorways/dual carriageways and doesn’t seem to anticipate enough when slowly approaching a car ahead. Too much unnecessary braking for me.
I’ve discussed this with a friend who has a Golf (Mk VII?) and he has the same issues.

Unless the motorway’s very quiet, I just don’t use it.

I also have this issue. The car slows when overtaking as it detects the car on the left.  My previous superb never did this.

Yep mine does this as well, sometimes its fine and will just overtake as normal but other times I'll just be about to overtake and then it will slam on my brakes and I have to override it.

I'm new to the car with it's ACC and various Assist systems (couple of hundred miles that's all) and am trying to get my head around whether it's ACC or Front Assist (or Side Assist?) that is causing a deceleration. In some scenarios it's fairly straight forward, such as catching up with a car that's doing a few mph less than me. On other occasions it's less obvious.

Also, I'm looking at what settings there are to fine tune the sensitivity of the sensors/systems, and what real world difference they makes. Hopefully, Covid permitting, I'll soon be able to make a long run up the motorway and try the options and determine which works best for me.

As far as i know there are no settings beside the little knob on the ACC stick by which you can regulate the distance sensitivity between you and a vehice infront of you. Though i have that set on the minimum distance as even minimum setting is still too much for me. I cant imagine having it set on max and driving on the highway, it "reads" the car jumping infront of you waaaay tooo far infront of you...

Also what i dislike about the ACC is when i use it in daily traffic and when it stops on the traffic light, i have a feeling it leaves too much space between me and a vehicle infront, sometimes you could fit additional car (e.g. Clio or similar size) inbetween. I wonder if that can be regulated by the garage? Will ask upon my next trip over there...

I was about to say it must be something to do with Norfolk roads but then spotted someone in Yorkshire has the same issue...!

Been using the system today and worked fine, hey ho!  If it's that sensitive to knocks, my job (going onto building sites) isn't going to be good for it

Guys this seems crazy.

I can't believe that there is any chance for you in UK to have Europe set up on your ACC. I drive a LHD in Europe. I have done many road trips on motorways with no issue. I overtake with ACC on when I am on the left lane. But.....when I am on the middle lane or on the right, with ACC on I can't overtake slower cars which travel on left lanes. Overtaking from right is illegal in Europe.

  • 4 weeks later...

I am having the exact same problem with my new car, only 8 weeks old and this issue is a real pain at times especially when it stops you from making progress.  The whole thing seems to be too sensitive and I have the car booked into my dealer in a weeks time to be looked at as there are a number of issues that are annoying me from this to the infotainment system playing up, noisy folding mirrors, rear wiper operating when I don't want it etc

All issues seem to be sadly being experienced by others on this group and it is good to see others comments on these forums.

I have travel assist on mine which has road sign recognition.  Automatically stopping the vehicle from overtaking on the right when using ACC/travel assist only happens when the car oddly starts to read and display the road signs in kph.   This happens randomly.  It’s as if the car has suddenly decided it should be driven on the right side of the road, rather than the left,  the speed limits are in kph, rather than mph.

When the road signs are being recognised in  mph, the car will not slow when you are overtaking on the right, but will do if you approach a slower vehicle on the left as intended.

Interesting, I haven't got the sign recognition but the car thinking it's on the continent makes sense for the ACC error!

Incidentally, your car isn't white by any chance?  I've seen a white Mk4 estate around the south of Norwich a couple of times...!

Nope, not me - quartz grey estate here.

I'll keep my eyes peeled - I'm in a (very dirty at the moment) Corrida Red hatch!

I have this issue too but only intermittently.  For example, yesterday I drove down the M3 from Basingstoke to Southampton and back during the day in fairly light traffic.  All the way there ACC worked perfectly, frequently passing slower vehicles in the lane to my left, but on the way back it kept slowing down because of them.

I had been wondering for some time if the radar was misaligned or had two wide a view ahead, but then I noticed for the first time that in these situations the lane assist display actually showed a white car in the neighbouring lane - as someone else has explained above.  So, my car knew that the car it was slowing down for was in the lane to my left, so had no excuse for slowing down.

When I got home I looked around various settings and found that the car was incorrectly set for “Driving on the right”.  If the car thinks I should be driving on the right, then it would correctly prevent me overtaking a car to my left.  But the mystery then would be why it often does allow this.  I’ve changed this setting to “Driving on the left” but haven’t had an opportunity to test it so far.

i'm wondering if this setting also explains why I have been finding I get flashed when using the matrix headlights on rural A roads?

It will take me a while to know whether this change has helped with these two problems but I will report my findings when I’m confident it’s made a difference - or not.

Out of interest where in the myriad of menus did you find that setting?  I've got the PDF manual but short of scanning through the whole thing and having no lock with a word search I would be grateful for a nudge in the right direction...

Not that my acc has had this issue recently, after my original issues in March it seems to have calmed down!

Got my new Octavia on Monday and this is the only issue I've found with the car.

Hessitation when overtaking on the ACC, solved by a bit of right boot but it is frustrating when you pull out and you don't automatically accelerate. Not happening all the time but enough to make it an annoyance

Be interesting to see if the driving on the left change works but I haven't found that option yet

That's another bug that has been commented on several times in this forum, it also means that at night the headlamps dip into oncoming traffic!

On my Superb, it starts to accelerate if you indicate and pull out. Indicator obviously informs ACC that pulling out is probably an overtaking manoeuvre.
