2016. Octavia 1.8 tsi or 1.4 tsi

Featured Replies

Hi.

I'm looking to buy used Octavia 2016. with petrol engine,so what engine is the most  reliable 1.8tsi or 1.4tsi?

Thanks.

As this is a UK based forum you may find it hard to get advice on the 1.8. Looks like it's been a good engine in other vehicles though. Also a sweeping statement is that a larger engine doesn't have to work so hard suggesting more reliability.

Just bought a 1.4TSI DSG Octavia estate SEL and couldn’t be happier. Really moves the car well, acceleration is very impressive. Dropping in to sports mode (when the oil temperature is up) and it has really got a kick for a small engine.

I've got the 1.8 and whilst the 1.4 is a good engine the 1.8 is in a different league. It has double injectors so it does not suffer from carbon on the valves, it is still a EA888 Gen3 engine, same as the vRS, Golf R or Audi S3 but slightly less capacity, smaller turbo and a lot less stressed.

Only down-side is you still get the DQ200 Dry DSG7 and 180bhp is a lot for that gearbox.

I would go manual or if you can find one go 1.8 4x4 and get the DQ250 DSG6 which is bulletproof

Mine is a MY16 car 4x4 which only comes as DSG6. I have had it from new.

I have a 1.8 tsi 180 with 183000km and it drives perfectly, as well as the dsg7 (dq200). the 1.4tsi is usually enough, the 1.8 tsi gives you the little more that makes the car enjoyable ;)

1.8 will get you multilink suspension. This reason alone is enough to purchase for me.

Also I think it has bigger better brakes (I may be wrong though).

Yes forgot about those! Multilink rear and 312mm/272mm brakes.

The DMF on the manual can be an issue as it is on the VW Golfs but plenty of aftermarket improvements in that area if the clutch did start to go.

In UK the 1.8 was with multi-link rear suspension & was only in the L&K trim at the start..& yes it had the same gearboxes as the 1.4lt engines (on torsion beam) & thus limited by torque to 250Nm (for the manual MQ250) So there is no point in carting around a heavier front engine when a lighter & better 1.4lt will do.

I went & got a MK7 Golf Estate in GT spec with 1.4lt (140PS) to get the multilink rear suspension.....so the best of both worlds.....

Just to add another thought:  I remember ages ago someone compared the 1.4 power curves to the 1.8.  I forget the peak power of the each.  what they found was the torque and power curves were very close up to 4-5k revs then the 1.4 would drop off and the 1.8 would keep rising a bit.  In daily driving you might find the feeling to be the same and only when really go some will you notice the difference.

Yeah they were similar.....However a revo stage 1-B (98RON) remap soon sorts that out!!!...

If you like to push it then I would go for 1.8 otherwise obviously you just waste fuel in daily drive.
