Columbus Firmware

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Should I update the firmware on my headunit? It is a Columbus RNS 510.

SW-Version 3984

Im about to update the maps to V17 West. What will I gain/lose from updating the firmware? Does it make any difference?

Thanks

I recommend update to 5238 or, if you have external displays connected, 4120

Thanks pab, I've found the software for 5238. I have no other screens connected. I was worried it might not work and I couldn't go back. Is it straight forward? Put the disk in and it just updates itself?

In theory, yep, it's very straightforward. Download the file, burn it and pop it into your Columbus. It will load up and do its thing itself. One thing to note: when it's updating it reboots several times and, with mine at least, it makes some very horrible sounds as it reboots (basically, it's the sounds of suddenly tearing out a feed to a speaker). It happens very suddenly, very loudly and almost causes my heart to stop! So if you're of a nervous disposition, maybe wear ear plugs or stand outside the car!

In practice, things can go wrong with any update. It's never happened to me, but some people have had firmware updates fail on them. Generally you can recover the drive with a recovery CD, but there is a small risk of completely bricking the unit.

The main visible difference from 3984 to 5238 is nicer graphics for the parking sensor display. Not 100 % sure what else it does. @Rustynuts will know.

I'm also thinking of doing this to re-partition a replacement HDD. Will flashing 5238 retain the green Skoda branding and colour scheme or will it default to the red(?) VW scheme ? I think I read on another thread that more recent firmware versions are universal and will keep the branding (I assume there's something in hardware that identifies it as a Skoda unit) and just want to confirm that this is the case or if I read it wrong.

I have the V3 maps DVD that originally came with the car. Will that work with 5238 or will I need to get hold of the newer maps too?

It will retain the green skoda as standard

It will work with your old maps

But you should really update them

Are you putting in a SSD

Excellent,

Good,

I will if I can get it working. I want to see if a new HDD fixes the freezing-up problem first,

Not yet, until I know if the old HDD is the problem or if it's something wrong with the board. Got an old laptop HDD to try it with first.

😁

I'm doing this to see if I can get a unit that I'd bought as spares (for the working LCD display module) back to working. It was freezing up at the security code prompt after booting, although did once start working properly (although it did eventually freeze again after an hour or so) so I was fairly convinced that it wasn't corrupted firmware as reported as being the cause of the lockups all over the internet, as it wouldn't have worked at all if that was the case. I managed to confirm that is was on F/W 5238 with map version 6317 while it was working. I expect a previous owner had updated it (or tried to), as the label on the top says HW: H04 SW: 1004.

I've now swapped the HDD for an 80GB drive, re-flowed the Flash chips with hot air to fix any dry or cracked solder joints, re-updated to firmware 5238, and installed maps V3, and so far it seems ok. Will see if it's still ok tomorrow, after it's had a chance to cool down and reset itself.

Is there a way of copying the maps partition from the old HDD across to the new one? Of the three partitions on the drive, only one is recognised by Windows, and it doesn't look like it has map data on it. Would Macrium Reflect's exact/forensic partition copy mode do it?

I'm presuming any firmware and map updates need to be via DVD and not the SD Card ?

Only have a burner in my old XP machine which I just retired.........

TIA.
