I think you need a 45mm one, measure the exhaust pipe outside diameter to be sure.

Re-using that original clamp was very, very optimistic if a leak free system was intended.

I doubt it, that's well after both lambda sensors.

45.

They open up bigger and then close down to the nominal size as you tighten the bolts.

Can you see the end of the pipe that's in the back half of the broken sleeve clamp? I can sort of maybe see part of the end of it in one of your later photos, but none of them show it clearly.

Trying to clear up this debate about whether it's just the dual sleeve clamp that's sh@ itself or if the front end of the middle exhaust section also has some damage.

If the mid-pipe is the original I'd expect it to be much more solid and intact than the sleeve clamp.  Try to get a close-up photo with flash on.

Still not 100% sure from those.

Will have to get the old sleeve clamp bits off completely to be sure I think.

The collision with the ground that picked up the debris may have been involved in the destruction before your mobile fella got involved. Why he didn't suggest replacing the sleeve clamp I have no idea.

oh i live in a really awkward place where my car is parked bit away from house.

is it ok to hammer the old clamp off with a rubber mallet? will that be safe?

even with extension for the angle grinder, i will be in everybody's way.

No, it won't seal it.

Do whatever you need to do to get it off.

The copper grease; do you mean on the clamp bolts' threads? If so then yes, good idea.

i was just seeing if any of the things i have will be good enough to seal.

now you have said that then i will use some copper grease on the clamp bolt, thank you.

thank you, it will be last time i drive it till parts comes.

I have just had the middle section off on a 2009 1.4 petrol and from memory the middle section slips into the rear section and the clamp ..... clamps them together. I had to grind the bolts off as they were all one piece of rust, but as your mechanic had them off recently, they should still come off o.k. I did not have to use any sealant on that joint.

@froggy8, how did it all go in the end, job done?

hi

i measured the wrong part of the pipe when i ordered the clamp sleeve so i have now got the right size clamp sleeve so will fit it on tomorrow.

I got the size of the front pipes wrong on my 2000 VW Passat 4Motion, I can't say how/why, so needed to buy in a second pair, though I did end up using one of first wrong size on my daughter's old late 2009 Ibiza - or at least used the clamps as on both cars it was only the clamps that had failed due to corrosion.

I still think that in your case a trip to an exhaust place will be the way to sort this out, I don't mind being wrong though.

From your pictures I got the impression that the last time that exhaust was worked on, your mechanic only released one of these clamps on that joining sleeve, which to me seems like being a strange thing to do, but maybe prompted by the condition of the next section of exhaust - ie he thought getting that other clamp loose would render that section unusable.

Again I hope that I'm wrong.

i couldnt get the second clamp off but the other clamp just fell apart from rust.

yes, i think you are right, i dont think the mechanic touched the first clamp.

still havent sorted this out yet as the 52mm od sleeve i just bought fit on 1 pipe but not the other, the other od diameter is 54mm so looks like i would need a sleeve with one end bigger than the other which i cant seem to find with clamps.

only ones i can find is these:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-5-63mm-Mild-Steel-Aluminised-Exhaust-Adapter-Sleeve-Male-Female-Repair-Joint/283903414259?hash=item4219f64ff3:g:~goAAOSwG-1Zv4eh

and that doesnt have any clamps.

  • Author

on one end it has to be 56mm open and the other end 54mm open, i was thinking if i get a 56mm open one then i should be able close the other end up at 52mm?

Have you got all of the parts of the old sleeve clamp off both front and mid section? Photo of current situation?

got one clamp off but couldnt take the other clamp off, i did manage to move the clamp further down the pipe so i can fit a sleeve onto it.. no, didn't take any pictures unfortunately.

Thing is mate, the clamps aren't the only parts that need removing, you need to get all of the old sleeve parts off, that may be why you're measuring diameters that don't make much sense to me. It should be straight, uniform-diameter tube that the new sleeve clamp slides onto, on both front and mid sections.

Hacksaw through the middle of the bolt on the clamp you're struggling with, if you don't have dremel or angle grinder available.

See this video, where life is easier for him because the old sleeve clamp hasn't disintegrated like yours.

thank you wino,

i have seen that video too, ok i will try again to take that other sleeve off but ive tried hammering it, tapping it with a flat screwdriver and it just does not want to budge to the end of pipe.

You won't be able to get the back half of the sleeve off until you get the clamp off it, see my edit in the previous post about hacksawing the bolt
