Virtual Pedal Retrofit

Recommended Posts

I'll document my progress here as I go along, retrofitting virtual pedal, which I sometimes see referred to as "easy open" to a 2017 Right hand drive notchback (sedan) Superb.

The car already has KESSY, which I understand to be a prerequisite.

Ordered from aliexpress here

Kit showed up today, it even included a roll of TESA harness tape.

Things I don't know yet:

A) Where exactly my KESSY module is and how best to route the cables to it.

B ) What 2x pins on the KESSY module I connect the yellow/black and red/green 2 cables to.

If you install it, let me know why my factory fitted one has stopped working even though everything seems to be in check :tongueout:

you've already read all the threads about the right way to trigger it? (not waving foot left to right, but kick forward and back?

Please... I'm a master triggerer sir! :D

I've had no issues with it when new and for around a year and a half, always got it right the 1st time and I have tought the little ones too how to master the technique....

Then since last summer it has seized working with the occasional waking up for some periods where it works flawlessly for a couple of days and then falls back in limbo. The spoiler is clean, cables and sensors seem to be there, I guess some software or sensor hiccup as my dealer says it's not the first time they;ve heard of that.
I have a scheduled oil service soon so I will ask them to investigate, i'd just hate to have them take anything apart and risk the inevitable extra damage they usually do, just for this feature, i think they try some S/W update first though, we'll see...

Think I managed to find the right pins on the Kessy module. With original skoda parts it should be kessy pin 31 (grey wire) and 34 (blue wire). On this kit it's kessy pin 31 (yellow/black wire) and kessy pin 34 (red/green)

Thanks so much to @JR RS for this picture.

so helpful.

Now I just need to figure out where the wires should enter the boot, and where the little 'connector block' that the 'aerial' plugs into should be mounted, and what parts the chinese aidu auto kit is missing

Kit is missing:

from diagram 909-000
5K0 962 283 Retainer for aerial Sensor line for tailgate opening £5.10 (22 on diagram)
000 971 010 x7 retaining plate for cable binder (self-adhesive) £2.28 each (24 on diagram)
3C8 962 283 Bracket £7.16 (21 on diagram)
WHT 003 954 x2 Hexagon socket flat head bolt £0.59 each (21A on diagram)
N 107 324 01 corrugated pipe in coils of 5m 'order unit 5' £3.31 (27 on diagram)

fun fact, the 'sensor lines' (16 on diagram) are listed at £88.13 each! :D this is where the saving by ordering the chinese kit as opposed to all skoda parts is good. I actually think it's genuine vag parts anyway, the little controller box has a stamped vag number as do the connectors.

All the wiring for PDC sensors and virtual pedal connectors come up to this one plug, which connects to the CANBUS wiring that runs into the car body under the master (right side) BSM radar.

Omg absolute hero @JR RS!! Couldn't be more helpful.

@SashaGrace

Do you mean replace the 'close' button on the bootlid? With some different version? Sounds weird.. Wonder why? And which specific controller are you talking about? The little one that comes as part of this easy open kit?  Thanks!

Yeah there is a different close button with 2 buttons on it, one regular and one auto button so you can press the auto button and it beeps, you empty the boot and when you are done and the key is out of range it closes the boot by itself. You need to replace the button, add a few wires from the switch to the bootlid controller which lives behind the trim on the left side of the boot and swap that out for an M or Q revision one.

thanks, I see what you mean, there are 8 versions of that control unit for tailgate. and if I go for the 's' version,

I can wave the foot to close the bootlid. did they go back to 1 button with the S version I wonder?

I see an advantage in having foot kick to close the bootlid, but I see zero advantage in a dual button. like literally, zero. from a UX perspective, you have one call to action, one button to press. how has 'auto' made your life easier? you still have to press a button, might as well just press the close button next to it when you're _actually_ done... no?! so for me it's the S version or nothing. I'm guessing no need to change the button for 2-button variant if choosing the 's' controller? skoda retail price is £185 on that controller, probably not worth it new but will keep an eye out for one from a breakers. I don't see M or Q versions, perhaps they're Kombi-specific?

The auto button is handy if you have a heavy item to pick up from the boot, so you hit the A button, get your item and walk away and the boot closes which is slightly easier in some scenarios than the foot wave but yeah, mine is J revision with S revision software and it closes via foot wave as well. M and Q are Tiguan/Arteon controllers.

So I found bootlid module 5Q0 959 107 S (13/05/2019-20/07/2020) used on ebay from an audi Q2, would I be right to guess that it would need to be flashed with ODIS with skoda parameters? if so, I have a full dump of flash files for vag that's up to date as of march, but i can only see these files for that module

FL_5Q0959107AB_0272_MQBMID_V001.frf

FL_5Q0959107L_0261_MQBMID_V001.frf

FL_5Q0959107G_0250_MQBMID_V001.frf

so if it needs flashing to skoda, not sure where to get the right file for that S version

@SashaGrace I just checked , and my bootlid controller is also the 'J' revision. how do you mean you have 's software' on yours? you mean it's flashed with ODIS to some 'S' version (in which case I can't find an s version flash data file, only G, L or AB), or it's just a paramater set xml file that you set to it? If I can upgrade mine likewise somehow on a software basis from J to S to avoid having to buy an S controller, all the better

Thanks, so I guess OBDeleven can provide the S revision code (13.5.2019-20.07.2020). I can't find that flash file for ODIS, but I can find the next revision called AB (20.07.2020 - 23.11.2020). After that, looks like the part number changed. I'm going to hazard a guess that all versions up to the part number change use the same hardware, and take my chances flashing the AB version to my J controller.

This looks a great retrofit.. If only I'd known it was possible.. I could of had it installed for the last 2 years 9 months.. May try and do it on my Kodiaq when it arrives..

Any more updates?

Just waiting on the few ancillary parts (bracket, line retainer etc) on backorder to arrive at the parts dept of local dealer.

Meanwhile.. Picked up a battered old laptop for £20, spent 2 days getting windows 7 x64 on it and fully updated , loading it up with vcds, etka, odis-s and odis-e, battling drivers to get the Vas5054a properly working with both Odis-s and odis-e and proceeded to flash the bootlid controller, not really confident I should be let loose with odis-e but I'm a chancer, as attested to by the fact that I did it with both the car battery dying from the hours I spent trying to get the software connecting to the car, as well as flashing over Bluetooth instead of USB which for many reasons is obviously ill-advised. Anyway the flash went fine, but my bootlid is now a bit mental, it only opens 1/5 of the way and stops. I'm guessing that as well as flashing the controller, I probably need to give it some basic paramaters, but I can't find any really clear guidance on how to send paramaters. I think VCP can do it, assuming you have a zdc paramater file. But that means buying even more software and hoping the right zdc file is out there somewhere. Apparantly you can send paramaters as xml files from odis-e but god knows what chance I have of finding someone who can give me the xml paramater file for the bootlid module on a superb 3. If these paramater files simply contain the values for adaptations (in vcds language) then that would be nice, as I'm sure some friendly face on here would tell me what values they have in their bootlid module adaptations.

The latest ab software makes different noises as the bootlid opens and closes, not sure if that's any different to "s"

One other point, anyone planning to fit the dual close button instead of the single close button - looks like a messy swap, the button is attached to the fabric bootlid liner trim in a mucky way.

piked up parts from skoda,

skoda parts diagrams / etka is wrong.

5K0 962 283 Retainer for aerial Sensor line for tailgate opening

does not look anything like it should, it should be as per the diagram a strip of plastic to retain the sensor aerial wire, but rather it's actually a plastic bracket for holding kessy aerials.

whoever makes the skoda etka diagrams has messed up here, so the dealer will raise an etka technical request to challenge it, but to do so, I need to help him out by giving a vin to a sedan superb iii that has virtual pedal. If anyone would be so kind ..

Vor 5 Stunden sagte AlVal:

es sollte gemäß dem Diagramm ein Plastikstreifen sein

What are you looking for exactly? The part number for the sensor (encoder cable) is 3V0962239 this line is glued directly in the diffuser.
