Front brake pads - Sensor?

Featured Replies

Hi, Mi 2017 Superb with 95.000 km is on its original brake pads front and rear, and they seem to have still some km left. It's the first car where the brakes have lasted so long.

Do you know if they have a wear sensor or do I have to keep an eye on them not to destroy the disc brake?

Any tips to replace them?

Rears are slightly more worn than fronts, that's a bit odd. How do you replace them with the electric hand brake?

Thanks in advanced,

Fronts usually have a sensor on the left side for wear.

Rears are used by the adaptive cruise control braking so they wear more than the fronts. Mine were done recently at 28k miles as they were near the knuckle while the fronts are fine.

As for changing you’ll require a diagnostic tool such as VCDS, OBD11, Carista etc to place the electric handbrake motors in the retracted position to change the pads.

As @SkudMissile21 said. There is a wear sensor on front pads.

Not very surprised with 95000 km. I've driven several VAG vehicles and I sold all of them before needing to replace the brake pads.

Audi A3 Mk2: 119000 km.

Superb Mk2: 117000 km.

Audi Q3 Mk1: 133000 km (still used by my wife).

All with original pads (TRW).

Note: the Q3 pads min thickness is 9mm (incl. backing plate), they're still 12mm!

On Superb Mk3, the min thickness (including backing plate) on brake pads is:

Front: 7mm

Rear: 7.6mm

Have a look here on official Workshop manual (see P109 & 110):
