New ECU???

Featured Replies

Hi All

Had a minor front end bump, local body shop replaced the bumper + front grill  and resprayed the bonet..  Car runs perfectly.

The problem is that the airbag warning light has come on, I took it to my local VAG specialist and they scanned it with there ROSS tech emulator  and read the following warning (printout attached)

00003-Control Module

          014-Defective-MIL on

I was expecting a replacement sensor or hopefully just a reset.

They said that I need to replace the ECU I asked for a price and they went quiet, Looking online I read something about a checksum that is carried out.

Is there anyone that can fix this without buying a new ECU?

Has anyone tried some of these  ecu fixing websites, where you post your ecu?

Ideally I'm looking for someone within a hour of oxford that I can drive to and fix it..  Headlights also need resetting as have started blinding people.

Car is a Skoda Superb Elegant 63 Reg

I suspect some part of the airbag system has detected a collision and it has gone into crash mode. IIRC VCDS can't do much in these circumstances, something like VCP or ODIS is needed to reset the airbag ECU once any damage has been repaired. @langers2k knows a fair bit more than me about diagnostics, he might be able to offer more insight here.

The guy in the video repairs Cat cars and has described a way to reverse a crash fault.

I have used BBA reman before.

Some crash faults can be removed but I think the general VAG/Skoda stance is probably to replace it.

Have you contacted your insurance or the garage that did the repairs? Feels like it's gonna be linked to the original accident...

I've found someone who can reset the headlight angle with the VCDS software. Only charging me £10..

I'm assuming he can't clear the airbag light.

I googled  Odis diagnostics and found two companies in the area, I've also heard mention of Shark, Am I wasting my time?

Anyone used

https://total-vag.co.uk/ or http://www.autocure.uk/

I'm paying for the repair, body shop quoted for the bodywork.. were careful not to specify only the bodywork.  (not the skill they had)

Seems crazy to have too replace the ECU, guessing there aren't any tricks like leave it unplugged for 40mins

I'm sorry to say this, but I think it needs dealership grade tools.

No harm in trying though.

You need to check the mechanical alignment of the headlights, not just adjust the angle within VCDS. The adjustment mechanism in the AFS system has a limited range of movement, and if the mechanical setting of the headlamp is off, there's a good change the AFS controller will run into situations where it can't adjust enough to correct the beam. You will need diagnostics to put the headlamp controller into 'Basic Settings' mode (this puts the AFS adjusters into the centre of their range) and then use a standard beam setting tool to adjust the position of the headlamp to the appropriate position.

That is what ODIS and VCP are.

I found a independent garage with

"Genuine V.A.G diagnostic equipment comprising of Odis and Erwin factory software"

I've never had the best experience of main dealerships

I'm guessing they would change the ECU, the loom and everything electrical .. followed by charging me 1000 hours labour at £100 an hour  to find out at the end it was a missing earth connection.

I thought Ross was expensive till I saw the price of ODIS

Does anyone know where the airbag control module is?

(Mk2 superb)

I had a look on ross and its looks like its getting the same error from the air bag control module every time I drive the car.

Probably a better start than changing the ECU to get the same error

I think ill send it to crash data  and try and get it cleared. Other option is to buy one from ebay, but I don't know if the second hand one from ebay has also been crashed.

Just left of the pedals (RHD) under the centre console and heater box.

There are plenty of companys that can reset the crash data on the Airbag Control Module, mine was done for £30 including return postage and was back with me in 48 hours.

I can't recall who it was, they may have been in Oxford or I may have invented that, I just googled and chose the cheapest that had excellent reviews, I think their name described what they do.

Module is located on top of the transmission tunnel well forward where it is protected from being hit by feet or any other object.

Thanks for the tip, Just removed. The nut on the passenger side is a little cosy..

I'll get it on the post on monday.

I can't find the place in Oxford, shame as could drop it in. Most of them seem to be up North.

I am pretty sure that it was these people that I used:

https://www.crashdata.co.uk/Default.asp

I can't recall the timing but I worked out they had to have reset it and got it back to the couriers within a couple of hours.

Very very happy with the service, if you do find a DIY way I would love to hear of it, there is always anxiety when sending away a critical component, at least dealing with these people you will know that in my case at least they did not try anything on and went way beyond my expectations.

So much for my "Oxford" :blush
