VRS 220 Petrol - Which oil?

Featured Replies

Evening ladies & gents,

I have been searching the forums and admittedly there is already a few topics on this but doesn’t seem to be a definitive answer, nor is the manual that helpful.

Which oil should I be using on a 220 2L Petrol VRS, which oil did it come out of the factory with? Castrol as its the recommended brand?

Many thanks

Manual says that oil needs to meat VW spec 504.00 for 220hp version and 508.00 for 245hp version.

504.00 usually has 0/5w30 viscosity. Where 508 is usually 0w20.

Castrol pays to have their brand on the oil cap :) The brand is your choice. I personally would try Millers if I were in UK, but there are so many good oil brands out there.

If you don’t track, I don’t think it matters much as long as the oil meets the required oil spec.

If you go to to a dealer for servicing they use Quantum oil all V.A.G group dealers use Quantum. Although they always put a sticker saying Castrol recommended, I dare say Castrol pay them for this.

5l of Quantum 5w30 is usually around £20-£30 at the dealers depending on if they have it on offer or not, it always seems to be on some sort of promo.

The VW504 00 / 507 00 is the recommended oil for the pre WLTP vehicles and is usually 5w 30 FS III (IN THE UK)

& at Dealers it will often be used for Fixed or Variable Service Intervals.

VW502 00  so 5w 40 FS can be used with a pre WLTP TSI for FIXED OIL & FILTER SERVICE INTERVALS .

Perfect oil, not substandard, and NOT long life.

This can be good if you want a long lived TSI.

Thanks guys, appreciate the help.

It’s like a minefield out there. 😅

Not really.

Super Markets, Motor Factors and Filling Stations and Dealerships and Online sellers sell Engine Oil to VW 504 / 507.

Not expensive really,  and you can use VW502 00 spec if you want.

Castrol need not come into it as just another brand that VW had a deal with as they do with tyres manufacturers,

they go where they get stuff cheapest.

.................

VW 508 00 / 509 00 as VW went with when needing to get the WLTP / RDE & now RDE2 figures can be a crazy price, and can confuse matters not only for customers but Main Dealer Employees that know little about engines or oils if they work front of house.

Surely not at that price per litre.  £25 for 5 litres is enough.  ASDA will have oil produced by a proper oil producer for that or less. Correct spec.

I actually got hold of my local specialist garage and they had some Quantum Longlife 3 for sale.

£14 a litre. I didn’t need loads, just a top up.

Thanks for the help!

That is fine. But £14 would have got a 2 litres of 5w 30 FS IIJ to VW 504 / 507. Tesco / Asda or others.

And £28 will get you 5 litres of Fuchs Pro C3 VW 504/507. Delivered! Enough for a topup AND your next oil change.
