Upgrading to 19's

Featured Replies

Hi guy's.

I'm new on here and am after thoughts/ advise on what I'm going to be doing.

Hopefully over the next week or 2 I should be picking up a Skoda superb estate 2.0 TSI sel executive. One thing I would like to do is upgrade the wheels to the 19" Vega's,purely for the look.

Firstly will they fit without to many probs?

And can I put 235/45/19 tyres on instead of the 235/40/19 that the sportline normally has?

Quite a short simple topic that  hopefully will receive some great input.I did drive a sportline estate a year ago and does anyone know if it has stiffer springs than the sel executive and will upgrading alloys cause any major issues? All comments welcome and

Thanks guy's.

U'll have no issues with 19s as they're available as an option or standard fit in a few different markets.

As for the tyres - many, including myself, have changed it from 235/40R19 to 245/40R19 as its a lot more cheaper, more supply, closer to the real GPS speed, and taller sidewalls for more comfort.

The downside is slightly increased fuel consumption due to the bigger tyre.

Changing from 235/40 R19 to 235/45 R19 adds nearly a inch (23mm) to diameter

Those who have only changed to 245/40 R19 only added 8mm to diameter (and 4mm worn off the tread, means back to the size of original when new)

Maybe where you live, roads are in good condition, but where I live the tarmac is so uneven on country roads that anything less than 50-55 profile is uncomfortable and rumbles.   However to some extend using a softer colder weather tyre (an all season, rather than a summer sport or eco tyre) helps.

They're the 19" Trinity rims.

Comes standard on the L&K models.

We don't get L&K models here in Oz.  So we get it with the Tech Pack here.

Same specs as the 19” Vega and Supernova rims.

My old Superb diesel had the bottom of the range 16 inch wheels but had practically no road noise in the cabin. My new IV has 18 inch wheels and the road noise is dreadful it really ruins the car.

Interesting, I've the 19" Trinity rims on my L&K,

I'm due new tyres on the rear axle soon (likely swap fronts to the back) I get 20% discount on Pirelli through work, I'm wondering the price difference on 245/40/R19 vs 235/40/R19.

Checking on Blackcircle, I can find P-Zeros on the wider profile (245) for £35 a corner cheaper than (235)

The 19" on my Superb, with the DCC suspension rides so much more comfortable and quieter than the 18" RS wheels I had on my mk2 MY11 Octavia RS.  It rode on 225/40R18 tyres.

@Hdsn555- I saved approx. $120 a corner by going to 245.  Almost $500 in total. Happy days.

Hi guys.

Ok just to give you a heads up on what's happened.Looked at a superb over the weekend and what a total waste of time. The advert was very misleading regarding description and I was very annoyed which the salesman did pick up on after a 6 hour round trip for a 10 min visit. In the meantime I'm continuing my search and have found another 2.One is an L&K 280 on a 16 plate so I'm hoping to arrange a viewing. It has the older Columbus infotainment system and does anyone know if this can be upgraded to the more modern touch screen?Maybe I need to start a new thread relating to this😂

yes, u can upgrade the MIB2 unit (8" touchscreen with buttons) to the MIB2.5 unit (9.2" touchscreen without buttons).

u'll need to upgrade the glovebox unit along with the screen unit.  they're a pair, and go together hand-in-hand.

i haven't done it myself, but plenty on this forum have, including some who also did the Virtual Cluster/dash too.

I've done the upgrade on my MY17 from MIB2 to MIB2.5 (just need to change the dash trim insert as the newer screen doesn't sit as deep at the top - still need to do this one mine). I got a screen off fleabay and sent my existing glovebox unit away for updating to MIB2.5, alternatively i was told you can simply change the columbus MIB2 screen to the amundsen MIB2.5 (capacitive buttons on each side) screen without having to update/replace the glovebox unit as the resolution is the same, therefore a direct replacement.

Thanks for this, I'll have look at this for mine, I've been looking at downgrading my alloys from 19's to 18's, for the combination of comfort and cost per corner.

More expensive, more prone to punctures, more road noise, decreased ride comfort.

They may look a bit nicer, but don't think for a minute that bigger wheels are an upgrade.

Doesn't matter wat sized tyres - a puncture is a puncture.

Low profile tyres r however more susceptible to rim damage.

As I mentioned before....the 19" with the DCC suspension rides so much more comfortable and quieter than the 18" RS wheels I had on my mk2 MY11 Octavia RS.  It rode on 225/40R18 tyres.

The right tyre & wheel package, combined with the right suspension - makes a significant difference.

You keep comparing your Octavia to a superb which makes no sense. I now have a superb with 18' wheels and DCC suspension and the road noise is shocking compared to the lowly standard suspension car with 16" wheels it replaced. It's a big disappointment tbh.

I agree with you 100%.

The road noise is most likely down to your tyre wear tbh.

Or the brand and type of tyre, and temperature.

In general (but there are exceptions), Eco and summer touring tyres rumble more when colder as they become firm.  Eco and sport tyres tend to be very firm all the time.  All-season and winter tyres have softer compound, but tread pattern tends to be more meaty, although in my experience tend to be quieter.

With only 11,000 km on them? They're the OEM tyres that came with the car.

Might this be the grey one up in Inverness which has just dropped off Autotrader? 👍

Not long after I bought my 280 I went to get new tyres fitted and was told that three of the 4 wheels were wonky and slightly twisted and or buckled. 1st car I've ever had that has had any problem of this kind but it is also the 1st car I've had with large rims. Obviously the dealer suggested I had damaged all three of them in the 400 miles I had had the car.

I'll probably go back to 18's when these tyres are dead despite the 19's looking so nice. Has anyone else had issues with distorted wheels on 19'?

The increase in road noise over the 17' winter wheels I run is also very noticeable.

I learned my lesson with the 19" EXTREMES (ugh) on my Octavia VRS. They ride hard and loud, cost more and are more prone to curbing on the lower profile.

My new Superb Scout had the 19" as standard but I have got the dealer to swap them for the 18" Braga Anthracite - suits the NZ roads so much better and whilst they don't look *quite* as good in the arches as 19"s, I will suffer that as they are superior in every other way!

(IMHO of course...)
