SportLine 2.0 TSI DSG terrible fuel soncumption (20mpg)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just got a new car a month ago, a 2017 Superb SportLine 2.0 TSI DSG with 220ps.

The problem is that tha car has a terrible fuel consumption, I had with a full tank (66 litres) 305 miles, 80% of the drive was in the city and very short trips, I usually do two 5 min. / 3 mile trips per day (going/coming from work).

I was hoping to get around 28/35 mpg…

why is the car burning the petrol so quickly?

thanks in advance for the help and answers.

cheers.

5 minute trip did you say is that right?

  • Author

Yes, it is right, usually it takes 5 mins for me to drive from home to work, if it’s a busy day, maybe 7 mins… if I go shopping (asda\tesco\hardware stores) I do not ha to drive more than 10 mins \ 4-5 miles.

Welcome to the forum.

So the trips you are doing is the reason.

That is assuming the tyre pressures are correct the air filter is clean and the spark plugs are OK.

You do not say how many miles the car has done.

Try a 20 minute drive before things get colder from tomorrow having reset the computer and see what the indicated fuel consumption is.

PS

If it did use all of 66 litres for 305 miles that is 21mpg.

So was that a brimmed tank and then 305 miles driven and brimmed again taking 66 litres?

That's your problem the oil won't even be getting up to temperature at that distance, I take mine out for an hour minimum 3 times a week and i thought i wasn't really using the car economically, You could do with a little run around or even a hybrid do you think ?

Thank you @roottoot, tyre pressures are ok , I just had 4 new tyres fitted when I got the car, air filter is ok and spark plugs are also ok. Tha car has had 30k miles when I got it. The tank was brimmed and I used the car in ECO mode for 90% of the time (10% in sport mode). I just refueled today (asda petrol) the tank was almost dry (15 miles range left) and the tank drank up 67 litres of petrol. I do not push the car hard in eco mode, I drive it normally.

@paddywack1878thank you for the comment, before this I had a sluggish 16 year old car, so I wanted something snappy and with more power. To be honest I do not want to change it to a hybrid, nor for any other car, I like my ‘new’ superb, it is my dream car

so the problem is with the distances that I drive? This is why I get these dissapointing fuel consumption numbers?

The ECO mode seems to be a waste of effort then and maybe fuel / E10 petroleum.

I would stick in a tank of Tesco Momentum 99 (E5) for less than £3 more than the Asda 95 ron E10 petrol and give the car a bit of an Italian Tune up once the engine has an indicated 90 *oC for the oil. then see how it does next week on the short cold start journeys.

@roottoot thank you for the advice, I will try the tesco momentum 99 (E5) next time, or some other premium petrol. Btw, what is the best premium petrol that I could use in my car? Can I ask you one more thing please? What is the ‘ Italian tune up’? I do not know this term…

Italian Tune up.

Once the car / engine / tyres are warmed up give it a bit of a thrash, get the plugs nice and hot and clean of any carbon build up, use the brakes a bit to be sure the discs and pads have a bit of a heat up / free up, any corrosion removed.

It is just what Car Salespeople do to cars sitting for a while un-used, just they are unlikely to give the oil time to heat up.

Tesco Momentum 99, min 99 ron,

lovely stuff in Scotland, now winter grade as all petrol is until the end of March.

Esso Synergy 99  produced by Greenergy & delivered to ESSO stations in Scotland, Greenergy part owned by Tesco

Sainsbury Super Unleaded, 97 ron min.  Good value, E5.

Overpriced Shell V-Power Nitro + 99 ron min,  base fuel brought in with partner Greenergy.

Gulf, BP, Texaco etc Super Unleaded etc.  97 ron min unless they are doing 99 ron min now.

Basically what Root means is drive it like you stole it, But in all honesty if you drive those distances you mentioned all the time you are stuffed my friend.

By comparison I have the Superb iV, on the occasional time I have forgotten to charge it and have to rely solely on the 1.4tsi for a 3 mile school run I get circa 22-25 mpg.

My 2.0 diesel around town gets about 35-40 mpg, but on a run to north wales last sunday from liverpool i got 67 mpg ......so these big cars petrol or diesel hate around town or short journeys ....driving through france and spain next summer so i should get decent mpg then but lets see.....

My 2016 2.0 TDI SCR DSG Seat Alhambra could do 630 miles without trying from 63 litres to well over 700 miles in the Highlands and using 'Coasting'.

But using it around town for a few days only doing a few miles a day it would not do 25 miles from a gallon of diesel.

After a 20,000 miles when it just started sipping AdBlue it would have the DPF light on and it needed 8 miles of a run to get it off.

By 30,000 miles that was starting to get to 20 miles before it went out.

Among the last of the great VW Group Defeat Device fuel sippers

Seat Alhambra  is a not the most aerodynamic car ever built either is it Root, it just shows you ay mate.

@paddywack1878They are not and not light,

which is why i went basic, 16" wheels, no roof rails. no leather, no motorised doors and removed the seats to use it as a van.

Funny how they show the more expensive top of the range heavier cars as being more fuel efficient.

Vorsprung Durch Technik.    Cheat the tests for emissions and cheat the new ones as well.

Your situation (and car engine) is pretty much the same as mine, I live pretty close to town and drive short trips which gives me a similar mpg as to what you're getting (high 10s/low to mid 20s) but on the chance I do get a longer drive I get about 30 or more. I don't even use ECO Mode, just Normal with some quick driving here and there but hardly in Sport Mode.

I would rarely drive over an hour though so I might start taking it out on long weekend drives.

Just to add a note, the newly introduced E10 petrol is reported to be "less fuel efficient" and so your mpg will be lower than normal.

Sport Mode*

I have the same car, a year older. My worst mileage measured on a full tank was 25.5 mpg. Tesco 99, normal DSG, air con always on, city driving. My best tank was 40.7 on a touring holiday.

what a cracker road to drive down, and superb views mate.

I have the 280 and on short trips / school runs, will never do more than 25mpg however I try. Realistic figure I can expect is 20mpg and lower if traffic is really stop start.

I don't bother with eco mode as it doesn't make any difference and I drive with stop/start off too.

On a normal motorway run, easy 35mpg if sticking to speed limit, more (40mpg) if you really try or realistically 30mpg if enjoying the performance sensibly.

Your 220 has longer gearing , less drive train losses so will get better.

I get better MPG towing a box trailer up the motorway than I do around town from the sportline.  Its just the nature of short journey driving. Luckily we have a smaller car for those journeys, but that is *probably* a bit of a expensive solution for you 🙂

What is your secret? I never see those consumption figures with my 280.

You need a long run to see a proper MPG value...

Does this mean I get 818 miles out of a tank?

Which figure? The motorway figure? Stick to speed limit 70mph ish, 35mpg.

Stay behind a bus or hgv using adaptive cruise , more than 40mpg, 45mpg even.

If you do 80-85mph, have a bit of fun, expect 30mpg. At least that's what I get.

^^^ Exactly the same here. I Didn’t buy a car with 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine with 276 bhp, a DSG box and 4WD for great fuel consumption. When I’m working, it’s four 2.5 mile trips 5 days a week and I get 21-23mpg. On a 1,400 mile round trip to Ireland, I averaged 34.6. On the motorways at 75-80 I was getting average 38. I used to get similar mpg on our 1985 2.0 Fiat Supermirafiori with 111bhp so there you go.
