VRS Refinement help

Featured Replies

Hi,

I’ve been having increasing issues with a horrible rattle on the drivers side door in my mk3 FL VRS, it’s fine on smooth surfaces but frankly irritating on anything rougher. Is this a common issue with refinement on the VRS or is it worth getting it looked at by Skoda?

Had the car 6 months now and although I’m enjoying the all round quantities, having come from a MK7 golf I am really struggling with the inferior refinement, the road noise on rougher surfaces is the most horrendous I’ve experienced in any of the cars I’ve owned.

Still have the rubbish default Bridgestones on but when the time comes to change them im praying that some better tyres make a difference.

Thanks in advance

I think you will find that getting rid of the standard Bridgestone tyres and going to Michelin Pilot Sport will make a MASSIVE difference for you.  The Bridgestone seriously upset the handling - they are useless.  They are noisy too.

Stupid first question, do you have anything in your driver's side door pocket??  If its metal, you will need to put some rubber padding in the bottom of the door pocket.

No stupid questions 🙂

Generally never put anything in door pockets as know that can cause rattles but tried padding it out with some cloths which didn’t make any difference.

Cant tell if issue is in door or window!

@Tonythesmoke I had a rattle in a similar place but on the passenger side. I also thought it was the door or window.

After much hunting it turned out to be the A pillar trim.

I have to remove and refit it now and again to eliminate the rattle for a bit. I think I’ll invest in some foam tape as a long term solution.

I also have a slight rattle that appears to come from the drivers door somewhere. Uneven surfaces start it off, but it only lasts for a few seconds before going away again, until the next uneven surface of course. I have had the car since it was 9 months old and this slight rattle started about a year ago. Just can't find what is causing it. Bought some trim plastic removal tools a while ago, as I am thinking about taking the door card and other bits off to have a better look. VERY FRUSTRATING! So you are certainly not the only owner who has this mystery problem.

The seat raiser / lowerer handle on the passenger side was the cause of an annoying rattle. I thought it was something within the door, but after dismantling that and driving with the door card off, I was satisfied it wasn't in there. It was only from pulling, tugging and knocking all around the front left side of the car I discovered it was that.

I've put a square of 3m padding on the gap between the seat base and handle. That solved it.

Will have a look at that myself.

I had a rattle in my drivers door(mk3fl) that was driving me insane on uneven Road surfaces. . But I think I pin pointed it at the weekend. .

It's was the button to lock out the rear window switches (so kids can't activate the rear windows). . .it was rattling back and fourth inside the hole its recessed into. . So for now I've just jammed a piece of card into the gap between the button and trim around it, until I can find a way to fix it that looks neater than a bit of card shoved in it. . .which at the moment I'm stumped with. . .

I can live with a bit of card stuck up more than I could the rattle.

Tyres will certainly quieten things but road noise is a serious weakness if the car. My wife's Kamiq has much better noise insulation.

Lots of threads on here about using noise insulation. I used noise killer in the boot and that made a massive difference to road noise on its own.

Thanks for all the advice.

still unsure what to do about the rattle, hopefully new tyres will help when that day comes.

Do wind deflectors on the windows make any difference?

just annoying these are all problems in the first place!

I had a rattle that sounded like it was coming from that area (I think is quite common) that was something to do with the fuel lines underneath the drivers seat. Mine was under warranty, but I've seen some threads with fixes for it.

It could be triggered with deep bass notes with the stereo turned up or with the revs at 3500-4000 (2016 Petrol VRS).

Might not be that, but thought it's worth mentioning.

I have wind deflectors on all 4 windows. They actually throw up more wind noise at speed.

Ha won’t bother with them then!
