Suspension or Engine mods?

Featured Replies

Picking up a sportline 220ps DSG on Friday, and I can't decide between a remap, new dampers, or doing nothing at all; although I know there will be some itches to scratch, I can't do them all.

For sure. More power on stock dampers will be swallowed up by an increase in squat, body roll and maybe tyre squeal.

That was my original thinking ken, but you know what they say, no such thing as too much power. Arguably for a road car you can have too much grip, makes the limit point way inside the handling limits for the car. Safe, but not necessarily fun.

I was annoyed by the excessive throttle pedal travel before anything started to happen. I bought one of these: Pedal Box . it gets rid of the play in the pedal and adds sportier throttle maps. It does not affect the stock performance traits of the engine. They've gone up in price since five years ago (what hasn't?) but it was money well spent.

Suspension would be fine with a Stage 1 map and is probably the best mod for the money.

One of my friends has a 280 Sportline with DSG and is running 521bhp Stage 3 on standard sportline suspension, its not ideal with that much power however I was impressed how its coping with it so far.

If I remap it, am seriously considering doing the DSG map also at the same time

I've just had mine remapped.  It makes it much nicer to drive.  As @freelunch says, there's almost a hesitancy when you first press the accelerator, the remap helps with this, but a pedal box in on my to do list.

I'd also think about one of these 034Motorsport Billet Aluminium MQB Dogbone Mount Insert - Awesome GTI - Volkswagen Audi Group Specialists.  Sometimes when you pull away quickly the wheels spin up a little and you get this banging noise.  These are supposed to stop it.  I haven't got one yet, but hope to have one soon.

Tbh I'm not concerned about the behaviour of the car when pulling away, I can drive around hesitancy and wheelspin. The two areas for improvement in my opinion are overtaking ability, and body control on a twisty undulating B road.

The following have transformed my 220 - so much more fun, yet still so so cruisy n comfortable.

- APR Stage 1 ECU tune (up to 316 hp now)

- Eibach Prokit lowering springs. More responsive suspension feel, less swaying. Including a DCC recalibration to match.

- Hardrace rear swaybar. Car stays flat while cornering.

- 034 motorsport dogbone lower insert. No more wheel hoping, and DSG shifts r more crisper n faster.

Next up is a DSG tune to round things up.

Did you make the improvements in that order?

No.

Springs, swaybar, tune, dogbone.

Doesn't matter wat order.

My initial focus was handling (suspension), cause I was happy with the factory horsepower.

However, with ECU Tune, it gives me the ability to have crazy power at any speed, like overtaking.

I had a DSG tune on my previous MK2 Octavia RS - made the driving experience fun, hence it's definitely going to happen with my Superb too.

In mod order.

Old Octavia:

Remap.

Shocks.

Springs.

Dogbone.

Pedal box.

New Passat:

Pedal box (came from Octavia).

Dogbone.

Remap.

Shocks.

Rear roll bar.

If I had to go down a budget and/or reversible route:

Rear roll bar.

Dogbone.

Pedal box.

Picked up car an hour ago, taken out since then with a friend to add another perspective. Conclusion is to forget any engine upgrades before the suspension is sorted out. An extra 100Nm and 80PS could easily get you into unexpected trouble. It's a world away from the Octavia vRS

I too get a bang occasionally when accelerating hard and the wheels spin. Had mine remapped. Thought it was the Traction Control.

If your going down that path you should really spend money on advanced driver training and some one on one training with a professional driver. They make a massive difference to your learning.

They might start by teaching that the NSL for single carriageway roads in a passenger car is 60 mph and the standard cars get about just fine passing slower vehicles when it is safe to do.

Loads of drivers are getting on down the road 60 mph with 150ps, or 220 ps or 300 ps and how ever many Nm .

You don't need to mod your car to justify that, in any case, already made that investment years ago.
