1.4 TSI Multiple Cylinder misfires despite replacing all 4 coil packs and spark plugs

Featured Replies

A leaking head gasket could cause misfire, leaking between cylinders.

  • Just to update my post, I had figure out what was causing the false misfire (False misfire-cause there was no loss of power or anything) issue. I used to keep OBD2 connected to the port all the time.

What worries me slightly about this whole thread so far (Pages 1-4) - seems to be the lack of either a compression or relative compression test having being done on any of these engines.  As the 1.4 i

Has anyone had faulty injectors on this engine?

Has your car been ok since ? I’m am currently having exactly same issue but don’t have anything conected

Yes. Never had a single issue since I took the OBD11 out of the port. try removing any electrical cable or devices out of the port. as an example mobile charger, dash cam etc.

Two days ago I have changed coil packs, and I got check engine light flashing today. No clue what to do next.

So why were they changed, as in was there an issue requiring them. Were the spark plugs changed or replaced.  Anything else done?  If the correct coils were fitted and correctly gapped plugs then check everything again. Wiring. Or have another cast an eye at your work.

Spark plugs changed two months ago.My mechanic told me this is the way to go, spark plugs, then coil packs,if this is not the problem then I should check if injectors are clogged.

Hi guys, i have a VW Polo 6R GTi with the CAVE 1.4 TSI engine and i have a weird multi-cylinder misfire at low rpm only (if i hold it at around 1500-2000 rpm the rpm's would start going up and down and i'd get the flashing engine light). If i let it go, it idles just fine and the light would go away. Drives hard. No issues. Would anyone know what that can be? I've tried changing most of the sensors, coils, spark plugs, gaskets.

The only thing i havent done is the crank angle sensor and injectors.

Did you get it fixed?

Same issue, I have a Skoda rapid 2016 1.4tsi 92Kw. It works fine, but during idle engine light blinks and epc come on with a rough idle and start stop error always.  Mechanic couldn’t find a proper solution. Shows random cylinder misfires codes, tried changing spark plugs and swapping ignition coils but no luck.

any info regarding this would be appreciated. Thank you!

I have already mentioned in this thread or may be my own thread about my finding of this kind of problem. I think, if there is no obvious loss of power, it is a problem of electrical...may be something attached to the 12v socket which is faulty or probably obd port is occupied with obd11 or dashcam. in my case i had to go through changing spark plugs, ignition coils etc which couldn't solve the problem..then I realised that when OBD11 is no more conencted to  the OBD port, this stop/start malfunction or engine flashing light doesn't pop up.

So, my advice would be to keep all the electrical appliances (12v adapter, cable, dash cam etc) disconnected and try few days to see if this problem reoccur. Probably you can use different 12v adapter to charge your mobile and also consider to check the health of your battery as well.

N.B: last night i had the similar problem after a long time (flashing engine light followed to stop-start not being working and cyl3 misfire with random multiple cylinder.  I changed the 12v adapter and it didn't pop up again. it's kind of strange problem to me but this is what it is, at least in my case.

I had these issues recently.

Forgot to post here but I managed to resolve a couple of months back. I had all 4 injectors replaced and car now runs amazing.

Hi Tjalli, yes, they are the same fault codes. If you don't feel lose of power or anything. I suggest check any device connected like even your obd 11 device, dash cam, mobile charger etc..take them off and drive. I keep getting this false misfire whenever I have my OBD11 connected for few days . It could be due to car battery being weak as well.

I am actually losing power about 1500-2100 RPMs. Disconnected everything that dose not come with the car.

Hi.Dont know about the codes,my mechanic just told me that there are misfires on all cylinders. There is check engine flashing only on idle when car is not moving for minute or two,the moment I start to drive check engine is not flasnihg any more.It ****es me off, otherwise car runs great,no issues.

Any update? Have you done a cylinder leakage test?

Hi all,

I have some small misfires with my Skoda Octavia, year of fabrication 2017, mileage: 102000 km, engine 1.4 tsi 150hp, engine code CZDA, dsg gearbox.

One month ago when i started my skoda, the check engine turned on and in gears: 1,2,3,4 between 1000-2000 rpm i had big misfires.

I took it to the service (its not a skoda service, its for multiple car brands) and they replaced the spark plugs according to the diagnosis.

After they replaced the spark plugs the car started to consume more gasoline with almost 3-4 liters /100km, so from 5.5. it went around 8-9 on a highway at around 100KM/H which in my opinion is a big fuel consumption, usually it was consumig 5-5.5 at 100KM/H.

After 500 KM the check engine turned on again and again i have misfires, this time smaller ones between 1000-2000 rpm in gears 1,2,3,4. the consume still remained high at around 8-9.

Now the car is in service already for a week now ,and i called them today and they told me that they still did not fix it because is a puzzle to find out what is wrong.

What could possible cause those missfires and high fuel consumption?

Thank you everyone for your opinion.

The misfire will cause high fuel consumption. Have you have a compression test and cylinder leakage test done?

Updates, it seems the problem were the spark plugs, more precise the brand. First time they were bosch. This time i dont know the brand. But the car acts normal now and i have a normal fuel consumption. Thank you.

I wonder if it was just a faulty batch? Lots of fake chinesium ones going about these days.

@Blue8793841 There could be also a posibilitly of faulty ones, next time i will replace them myself to avoid all the issues. :))

Any idea how long the plugs had been in for? Were they torqued correctly for the brand of plug? These engines seem to be a lot harsher on plugs than days gone. Usually change them around 40k whereas older engines used to last 60k.

I think the first time  just one or two of them were changed around 60000 km, so now ive changed all 4 just to be safe.
