That's strange, but new parts can be bad too! It can cause a major headache when you think you have ruled something out and the new part is at fault.

  • Just to update my post, I had figure out what was causing the false misfire (False misfire-cause there was no loss of power or anything) issue. I used to keep OBD2 connected to the port all the time.

Hi there,

 

Has there been a definitive solution to misfires across all cylinders? Also, could old batteries cause misfires?

 

A couple of months ago I experienced misfires across all cylinders, with symptoms of stuttering / juddering at low RPM, a warning light and error codes of misfires across multiple cylinders, as described in this topic by other members.

 

I took the car to a local garage (not main dealer or VAG specialist), the garage recommended replacing all 4 spark plugs which they did, allegedly with OEM long life plugs.
 

The new spark plugs appeared to have fixed the problem for 2 months, until a few days ago when the juddering returned…

 

As I was away from home with work, I took the car to a different local garage, who kindly read the fault code, which was ‘P217700, Passive/Sporadic, System too lean off idle, Bank 1’. The garage cleared the code and recommended giving the car a long and brisk drive to help clean the engine, which I did.


The car has run fine for 2 weeks since clearing the code, until today…

 

Despite regularly driving medium and long journeys, today I went to start the car and battery was completely dead (nothing left turned on or plugged in as far as I could see). I jump started the car and have given it a 30min journey on the motorway. All seems okay otherwise, no lights on dash, but a ‘low 12v battery’ warning did appear briefly.
 

It’s booked at the garage tomorrow for a battery check and a precaution fault code read.

 

Could an aging battery be behind the misfires? Or is the unexpectedly flat battery an unrelated problem?
 

All ideas on 1.4TSI misfires and unexpected flat batteries are very welcome. I am not a mechanic, but definitely happy to attempt some home repairs if recommended.

Sounds like it might be the earthing points it is an issue on the vrs as time goes by

UPDATE:

 

After jump starting last night, and taking on a 30minute drive, the battery was flat again this morning, so another jump start to get it to the garage.

 

The garage recommended a new battery, the same size as the current one fitted, which is arriving later today.

New battery is fitted and the car is running smooth and all seems well. So fingers crossed that might be it for battery issues and judders for now 🤞 I’ll update if issues return

Hello! Same issue here.
I have a 1.4 TSI 150hp Volkswagen Golf. I recently cleaned the valves, replaced the battery with the original one, changed all four spark plugs with original ones, and replaced the timing components with original parts. However, I'm still experiencing high fuel consumption, lack of power at low RPMs, and the check engine light occasionally flashes (about once a month), showing a misfire in cylinder 3. Additionally, when I release the accelerator, the RPMs go up by themselves before coming down.

I went for a test drive with the mechanic with the computer connected, but it didn't show any errors, except for the occasional misfire in cylinder 3 as I mentioned earlier.

We are going to check for a vacuum leak in the brake servo hose, inspect the ignition coils, and check the MAF / MAP sensors. The car has 59,000 miles.

Hi matpizzaro, sorry to hear about your unexplained misfire on the same engine. Did your fault codes show a misfire on cylinder 3 only or multiple cylinders?

 

The nearest I’ve found to misfire solutions have been on this very thread on Briskoda. Keep us updated on here if you can.

Hi! Before cleaning the intake valves, I was getting misfire in multiple cylinders. After the cleaning, it's only showing misfire in cylinder number 3. Code: P0303
I registered on this forum because it's the only one where I found cases with the same issue as mine. This problem started in February and to this day I haven't found a solution. I will keep you informed of any updates. Thank you all very much.

No it wasn’t. I understand now that it probably should have been… it was a non main dealer garage.

What worries me slightly about this whole thread so far (Pages 1-4) - seems to be the lack of either a compression or relative compression test having being done on any of these engines.  As the 1.4 is a direct injection, the valves do seem to get covered up in crud more often.

So - thinking about this logically; I think first of all; the ECM is slightly crying wolf re: misfires.  A lot of the misfires and misfire counters were reading single digit misfire counters.  That's probably an overly sensitive piece of software at play here.

Second; if you start getting errors on multiple cylinders from nowhere, that means you've got a problem with either fuel/fuel pressure.  The likelihood of multiple coil packs failing all at once is vanishingly small.

Third; some of those pictures of the valves look horrible.  Assume those are exhaust valve pics as opposed to intake.  I also saw a picture of one of the the injectors.  Anyhow, one of the posters said that his mechanic said take the car on a high-speed brisk run; problem went away for a week or two, then came back.

 

Its an issue; people want to save fuel and running costs think that by running engines kindly, it will save their fuel costs/costs of running the car etc.  This does not apply in VAG world.  Every single VAG engine I've ever seen/owned as always benefited from being driven hard.  Its the German way....

I would run several tanks of Super Unleaded through these cars engines as a first port of call to try clean up the EGR/valves and add some weights to your right feet.  That means hard acceleration and progressive braking at least once a week.  If your car is only used for short/in-town journeys, take it on some fast roads and keep it going for at least 100miles.  Do this at least once a month.

Nothing beats an "Italian tune" for cleaning out a VAG engine without taking it apart.

Today I picked up the car from the mechanic's workshop since they couldn't find anything, and a few minutes later, when I stopped at a traffic light, I noticed that the Start & Stop didn't work. After a few seconds, the check engine light started flashing, followed by a message indicating that the Start & Stop system failed. I went back to the mechanic's workshop, and we did another scan, which showed P0303, a misfire in cylinder 3.

I still haven't changed the coils, and no vacuum leaks were found in the brake booster. Now they are going to try swapping the coil from cylinder 3 with the one from cylinder 2 to see if the error shifts to cylinder 2 or not.

The brake booster is known as a common fault

I replaced all 4 ignition coils with new original ones, the fuel consumption decreased significantly, and so far the check engine light has not come back on.

I have the same problem: When is started the engine in the morning i have SS not working and after that check engine is on for a short time.

The battery is from dec 2021. Could be the battery?
