Replacement battery

Featured Replies

After 8 years my battery has lost the will to start my engine. I have a 1.2 tsi 85bhp and there is nothing in the handbook mentioning battery specification. I have looked at the local motor factors and there are choices of battery. I don't have stop start to a standard battery is listed. The specification fogs me. One battery is 60Ah with hold-down Type B13 Post positions 0; Terminal Type 1. The other battery is 45Ah while another is 63Ah. The fuses are mounted on the positive terminal. Also what is the purpose of that felt wrap around the factor-fitted battery and does it need to be replaced around the new battery?

This should help you with the physical size.

If it's around 60Ah, it's probably this size.

Length 242mm Width 175mm Height 190mm

The link is for AGM batteries which aren't suitable for cars that are not stop-start, but the physical size of those L1 to L6 batteries should help you identify what size you have.

Local Motor Factors have a  Bosch 60Ah for £111. I think I will plump for that one. Thank goodness I don't have stop/start looking at those prices

Try tanya.co.uk for reasonably priced batteries

Agreed, Tayna (not tanya, but it redirects) may well be able to deliver one to you next day for only just over half of that £111.

Thank you for your advice. I will look into it.

Watch out for the Yuasa recommendation. My battery died in 2020 when I was away. Ordered on line based on Yuasa recommendation. The battery did not fit properly. It is in but not properly secured. I had left the car with my son and he had a bit of anxiety about the whole thing. My was a regular lead acid not an AGM. Original had been a Varta.

I got it on line from Tayna but it was not their fault. It was definitely the Yuasa website.

I have the 2014 105bhp 1.2 DSG.

Looking at another local Motor Factors I have found a DriveTech 45Ah battery at 60% discount for £60. Measuring the in-situ factory-fitted battery it measures 207mm long and that correlates with 45Ah batteries. Yes, Fred I looked at that website and found it rather confusing with pictures of where the positive and negative terminal are positioned. My positive terminal is on the left but is it a case of just turning the battery round?  I phoned up my local Skoda dealer and was quoted £137 for battery and £69 for fitting!! An interesting weekend lies ahead.

If it helps I paid £59.34 in 2020 inc postage for the Yuasa Silver high performance 54Ahr. Note that it does no fit correctly but it benchmarks the price.

I would go Varta.

My last Varta I bought was for my Fiat Multipla and that lasted until I sold it 10 years later. Something to think about

Is there a part number on the top of the original? One that matches one on this page (view on computer, not phone to be sure of seeing all info):

fuse socket - Roomster(RO) [EUROPA 2014 year] (7zap.com)

It is difficult to see any info as it has a tightly fitted felt belt around it I need to dig deeper

Part number usually on top face, or does felt cover that too?

If I get another battery will that fuse pack fit correctly over battery top.? Looking at the cut out in the plastics to miss the 'viewing eye' looks as thought battery is tailor-made

  • Sponsor

Ah, I see. You'd have to unclip and lift the fuse section away a bit to see.

  • Sponsor

Not sure the viewing eyes are worth much to be honest.

I'd expect the fuse tray to be quite easy to lift off enough with the two or three clips unlatched?

Tayna and other sites will tell you to check that the battery fits, Tayna - "CHECK AGAINST YOUR CURRENT BATTERY"  - "Possible Marked Code(s)" - overall sizes - " tick I've checked - This Matches My Battery".

All databases have errors, including Tayna - and Halfords, my neighbour bought a Halfords battery which had a different code for his car the wrong type of hold down which he wouldn't let me do 30 seconds modification on (cut off the extra layer of plastic bar) so I had to do 15 minutes of modifying the meatal clamping bar and finding appropriate fixings (setscrew, washers).

Those 'magic eyes' aren't really up to much they can show green even when the battery is low and they only? (or used to?) relate to one cell out of the six.

It's the German's that have got you confused by having the battery arse-about-face, Tayna show 027 as the battery code for 1.2 Roomster, see here but I can't confirm the fuse pack fitting to any.   I've had their Enduroline fitted to my car for a number of years now and it's been fine. - https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/types/027/

Bought a NAPA battery from my local Car Spares for £69. 50AH and 400 cold cranking output and same dimensions as the original. Seems the business! Thank you everyone for your advice

Just noticed that the new battery does not have the metal studs the negative fits over. Is just the clamp enough to keep the terminal tight?

That sounds a little underweight but it depends on your use, it might not last as long as your previous battery.

Is that actually a stud off the battery or the post clamp, I thought it was just a fixing point for more earth wire connections - but I'm often wrong about things.

420 AH sorry. If it lasts the 3 years warranty I will be happy

Part of the negative clamp, not battery, relax.

The felt stuff is just thermal insulation - in case you are wondering how to remove that plastic "lump", I seem to remember that it gets clamped down over the top of the battery, so to remove it, after removing the earth terminal and slackening off the +VE post clamp, feed a largish screwdriver down through the hole in each of these clamps, maybe 3 in total, press down at that point to relieve the tension on the clamp and pull the screwdriver handle towards the centre of the battery - doing that should force that clamp out and so free, repeat for the other 1 or 2.

Edit:- the top section with the wires hinges back first it also has a small clip(s).

My daughter's partner changed it 15 mins max. Yes so easy the myriad of connections on the positive terminal unclips and lifts off in one piece. Original battery was a Varta, 50Ah 480 'whats its for cold start ouput'. Thanks for everyone's advice.
