Today, I Purchased a 2011 Fabia 1.4 VRS Estate. Could you please advise one a couple of things?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've just signed up to to forum.

Hello all.

I have just purchased a 2011 Fabia VRS Estate.

The MOT is good until April 2023 but there are two advisories that I would like to get sorted.

One is "Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Front (BOTH)"

The other is "Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge Rear Lower (BOTH)".

My first query is, would anybody be able to recommend a garage in Cheshire/Lancashire to sort the pin/ bush issue?

Secondly, tyre choice. I could just replace the rear tyres but would it be a good idea to replace all four?

I don't mind sorting all four corners.

I'm considering the Goodyear Eagle F1Asymmetric 6. I could just purchase 2 of these for the rears but  would it be better to get all four?

I've also been looking at the cheaper Avon ZV7.

Any advice on tyre choice?

Thank you.

I'd give the Avons a miss, they're too hard and not very grippy in either wet or dry, I don't like them at all.

I went for michelins, helped that halfords had an offer for 4........they look great and def ride better then the continentals that I did have.

Anyway, good video here for three of the premium tyres, offcourse reviews are always subjective.

1) I don't think you're that far from AwesomeGTi (find then in Site Sponsors).

2) You've not actually said what the present fitment is.

I think it's between the Michelin and Goodyear.

Size is 205/40 17

Hi mate I take mine to ashton’s Autoworx in oldham not too pricey and does a really good job , as for tyres I run either rainsport 3’s or acelera both are really good I think the rainsports are a better all round tyre the acelera’s are semi slick so only good when warmed up

Thank you, Thomas and Ken. Both of these places are local.

I want to get the work done asap, so will call them tomorrow.

As for the tyres, I can get the Rainsport 5's fitted to the rears through Asda Tyres for £175.96.

I really don't mind getting all four corners sorted. Would it be better to get the same tyre on each corner, rather than keeping the front tyres I currently have and just replacing the rears?

It will cost £450 or thereabouts to get four Michelin Pilot Sport 5 or Goodyear Eagle F1 Aysemmetric 6 and I'm fine with that.

Thanks.

I run the avon zv7s on my octavia vrs tsi and my previous rcz gt ,never once had any issue with them ,there not hard tyres at all and have been excellent in wet and dry conditions .

Not tried the Pilot sport 5's however the 4's are the best tyre I've ever ran.

You're right of course, silly me, I should have realised they'd be fine on bigger, heavier cars than the Fabia...

As you need new suspension parts for the track control arm (aka front wishbone), I suggest you fit part number 1 in the diagram below...and do both sides. This gives you the complete wishbone including rubber bushes, and because ball joints are cheap it makes sense to change them at the same time...as no extra labour is involved.

Does your car include either build code G01 or G07 ? This might be on the white build code label in the spare wheel well area under the carpet.

Being a VRS I suspect it will have one of these build codes, which would probably mean that the rubber bushes on the wishbones are slightly stiffer/harder than the normal ones.

However, you do have the option of fitting normal 6R0407151 or 6R0407151E left wishbones, and 6R0407152 or 6R0407152E right wishbones from the normal cars.

If you did go for aftermarket G01/G07 wishbones, I've only seen one choice on autodoc...so the choice is very limited.

Aftermarket left wishbone for G01/G07 build codes (rare aftermarket part)

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/bugiad/10827805

Aftermarket right wishbone for G01/G07 build codes (rare aftermarket part)

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/bugiad/10827806

It's possible that the aftermarket parts sold to replace OEM part numbers 6R0407151D and 6R0407151D (ie. G01/G07 parts) are actually ordinary 6R0407151, 6R0407151E, 6R0407152, 6R0407152E parts...as some aftermarket brands are very sneeky (ie. pretend they are something that they are not).

If you want to be sure about matching the G01/G07 build code parts exactly, then Skoda OEM parts might be needed.

Maybe just go for aftermarket parts sold to replace the ordinary 6R0407151, 6R0407151E, 6R0407152, 6R0407152E OEM part numbers (ie. for build codes G02/G03/G04/G38/G39/G40/G41).

Well thats is the first question they ask when fitting tyres ,how big and heavy is your car 🥴 as we all know tyres are a personal choice  the op asked a question i tried to give him a fair answer ,not everyone has to have michelin or goodyears 👍

The Michelin Pilot Sport 5's are being fitted tomorrow.

Thanks, all, for the input.

Thank you, Carlston, for the detailed suspension info.

A couple more questions, if that's ok?

The seatbelt seems to be a pain in the backside. Takes many attempts to get it to release when I jump in. Very frustrating. Is this an easy fix?

Also, the head unit has been changed to an Xtrons device. It has the DAB aerial on the windscreen. Audio breaks up all the time.

Never had an issue with DAB on my Ford Focus. Great reception, bullet proof. No issues ever. This is terrible. Any advice on better DAB reception?

Any car audio experts that can assist?

Thank you.

Pop the lower plastic trim off and uncover the seat belt mech, Spray it with some WD40 as it’ll be catching, should do the trick.

Mines tends to start sticking in the hotter weather.

Perfect.

Thank you, Mick.

Xtrons head units are really cheap Chinese smartphones in drag, replace it with a proper DAB receiver if you actually want to listen to the radio.

What would be the difference between the 6R0407151D for the sport suspension and the ordinary 6R0407151 part? To me it looks like it has a stronger structure but the same geometry.

I suspect the only difference with the 6R0407151D/6R0407152D wishbones compared to the other wishbones is the rear rubber bush. It's a solid rubber bush on the VRS, and non-solid rubber bush on all other models including other models with sports suspension, ie. it's only the VRS model that gets the solid rear rubber bushes...or at least build code G01 or G07.

Both rubber bush types are readily available aftermarket.

I recommend poly bushing the car if you are looking for significant improvements mate awesome GTI sell them and you have varying differences in stiffness

The Michelin Pilot Sport 5's were fitted today. Thank you all.

I also went to the local Skoda dealership today.

Image attached for what they quoted for the wishbones. Do I need to purchase the fifty quid worth of nuts and bolts or just the arms?

Also, are these the corret arms?

I also asked about the seatbelt and they quoted 136 for a new belt with 105 fitting plus vat, so £290.23 total.

Can any garage do this, and for less than for the best part for 3 hundred quid?

They quoted £60 for a diagnosis look and fix for free is it will take under 30 minutes.

If it can't be sorted in this time I will still have to pay the full £290.

The belt is driving me crazy. Can take 20 or 30 attempts to put it on.

Do you reckon a garage would be happy to take a look without a diagnosis fee?

Seems bonkers to pay £60 or worse, £290 if a squirt of WD40 will do the trick.

Thanks again, all.

As a new  forum member, I must say you've been really helpful. Much appreciated.

I'll second this. In fact I had to change a set of 'good' rears ZV7s as they were cracking after 2 years on the car.

I'd heartedly recommend Goodyear Vector 4seasons gen-2 as the grip, wear and noise makes them a joy to have on a car.

Hi and thanks.

Four new Michelin Pilot Sport 5's were fitted this afternoon, so sorted now.

Hopefully they'll live up to the hype. They do look nice, I must say.

Plus, I get £50 back from Michelin for getting four, so the set will cost £430.

I will let you know in time.

Just need to get these remaining issues boxed off so that I can really enjoy it.

Thanks again !
