Baffling clunk

Featured Replies

Morning All,

Got a 2005 Skoda Fabia Vrs 1.9tdi it’s recently developed a clunk, when changing gears predominately at lower speeds engine torque. I’ve so far replaced dogbone mount as was original and once removed was showing signs of wear, similar story to the gearbox mount lots of play and front to back movement. Still have this annoying clunk/knock I’ve visually inspected wishbones and can’t see any issue with console bushings front or rear even pryed at them and no major issue. Any help and suggestions would be helpful, what to check now, if it’s to be checked under load etc etc

Thanks in advance,

Ade

CV joint?

You haven't mentioned if you have checked the drop-links, ARB d-bushes, springs or track-rods or steering arm/inner tie-rods??

@sepulchraveno clunking when steering (I know this isn’t definitive) how would you suggest to test further?

It could be an inner joint, they don't do any steering, Jack up the car, grab hold of the driveshaft and twist it back and forth listening for a click and feeling for any slop.

I had a similar clunk when changing gear when I first bought the car - looked at the dogbone, etc, etc - finally traced it to the driveshaft nut on the front hub hadn't been torqued up properly by the previous owner.  Worth checking, 2 mins with a torque wrench to rule it out

Right bit of an update……. After finding time in between usual life struggles to look at the Fabia.

upon close inspection and whilst lifted in air with wheels on, and on stands.

drive shafts (inner) no real play bit of play on drivers side and a slight click when pulled on and some movement, in relation to passenger side, but it’s got less length?

tie rod ends, drivers side very easy to rotate and passenger side easy but some resistance. These will get replaced asap but can’t see these been the knocking culprit, unless someone can advise differently.

Any ideas on the clunking sound when changing gears more pronounced at Lower speeds and seems when the engine loads whatever part is at fault

as always thanks for the input thus far !!!!!

I’ve tightened all bolts and they was fine, thanks for the reply, the fight continues

Both tie rods fitted one was knackered…… all tracked and ballanced…. Still got a clunk in out play on passenger side and a metallic sound, that will be amplified when driving suspect this may be the culprit as I believe they should be a very small amount of play but no noise ?

Are you saying that when you grasp the passenger side front wheel at 9 o'clock & 3 o'clock positions and you try to rock the wheel that there is some play there?

No with the car on the ground it moves in and out and makes a noise, drivers Side doesn’t

Well…………. Wasn’t going to confess up to this…… But!!!! In the belief of if it helps other people out? And using the mantra of “start cheap, work up to expensive”

So gets home from work and gets underneath car and side to side play was more apparent, decided to take off centre cap and check the 36mm bolt, and low and behold I could tighten it with the breaker bar! Tightened it up, quick test drive and no knock!!! I know the torque value is 200nm so I’m going to tighten it right up and see how she goes, if not another cv joint (outer) will be ordered and fitted…… morale of the story stand back, accept advise, check the simple and fingers crossed it’s something simple.
