6" to 8" display upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi! II know there's a million posts about this but for the love of god I haven't been able to find out if its really possible to upgrade from the small display (1st pic) to the 8" display with buttons (2nd pic) without having to buy a new control unit (the one in the glovebox).

I also attach my system info page  (3rd pic). Any help would me really appreciated!! I have already received the 8"inch screen but when I plug it, nothing happens. Do I need to perform a SW/FW update or am I definitely screwed?

Best thing to do is message Pab567 he seems to be the guru on the later infotainment system.

Thanks so much Simon!!

U will definitely need a new/different glovebox unit.

The screen unit and glovebox unit work as a pair.  U can't mix n match.

Simply changing the screen alone will NOT work.

Then u'll need component protection removed, unless u get an MIB2 unit that already has it removed.

Coding will b needed too.

Not sure on the superb but with the Octavia pretty much all the MIB2 screens are interchangeable. Even the mib1 Columbus screen can be used with an MIB2 head unit.

So no you won't necessarily need a new head unit.

It could be that the bigger screen is mib2.5 which may need either some rework in your existing head unit or a replacement.

As above Pab567 is the guru and will be able to steer you.

Also, if it is just a screen swap then no you don't need coding. As it didn't work straight away then I imagine there is a different thing going on (like mib2.5 etc)

I'm surprised they're interchangeable as u say.

If that were the case, then it should've worked for Fernando.

BTW, that is not a MIB2.5 screen.

MIB2 screen has buttons, which is also wat Fernando says he's got that version.

MIB2.5 has bigger 9.2" screen with no buttons.

So am I right thinking that 2.5 is only for Columbus? Or is it for virtual dash to work?

Maybe what he got is a duff unit?

Thank you so much guys! Really appreciate the help. @pab567Can you shed some light on this? I'd be eternally grateful as I have about a week left to return the display 😅

Columbus comes in MIB1 / MIB2 / MIB2.5 / MIB3 flavours

Virtual Dash requires MIB2.5 and higher.

AndroidAuto/CarPlay, Smartlink, MirrorLink requires MIB2 and higher

Wireless AndroidAuto/CarPlay required MIB3.

The screens ARE interchangeable between different MIB2 glove box unit versions however MIB2.5 screens ()ctavia - 5E0919606D, Superb - 3V0919606D) require Columbus MIB2.5 units (5650350...). MIB3 units use different technologies (Ethernet instead of MOST, external GPS receiver) and should NOT be considered as a replacement to MIB1/MIB2/MIB2.5 unit.

Octavia screens have different shape to Superb ones.

What I didn't know is if 2.5 only comes in Columbus flavour.  It seems that most cars with virtual dash also have columbus but this could be a speccing coincidence.

Thanks for your reply! My current screen is 3V0919605A, does this mean I have MIB 2?

The display I bought is the 3V0919606, but I dont know if its A, B, D etc. (Picture of labels below) Is the one I bought MIB 2.5, and therefore, would require me to change the control unit too?

3V0919606 is MIB2 Columbus.

Definitely not MIB2.5

Ur original one, 3V0919605A is a MIB2 Bolero unit.

Oh I see, so I bought an MIB2 Columbus display and what I have is a MIB2 Bolero unit, so no chance for me to use this display without changing the control unit, right?

I believe Virtual Cockpit can be done on certain MIB2 units with MOST, but the crux is - you can only display maps on one or the other, there is a new button that appears on the infotainment display allowing you to switch between radio or instrument display.

Guys, pls do  not mix glove box unit with display unit.

EVERY MIB2 glove box unit works with EVERY MIB2 screen. Some buttons may not work, e.g. NAV and TRAFFIC if you have non-nav unit (Bolero) or APP (if you use facelifted screen with pre-lifted glove box unit).

3V0919606 is a DISPLAY UNIT for Columbus glove box unit.

3V0919605A is a DISPLAY UNIT for Bolero glove box unit.

If you have Bolero glove box unit and you replace your 6.5" display unit 3V0919605A with 8" display unit 3V0919606 everything will work but NAV and TRAFFIC buttons.

Not sure.

U would have to ask @pab567

My thoughts r still no, u can't interchange screens and keep the same glovebox unit, but according to pab567, they r interchangeable.

Virtual Cockpit works with Amundsen 5Q0035864C (non-DAB) and 5Q0035874C (DAB/DAB+) and MIB2.5 Columbus (5650350....). With Amundsen, you can display the map either on display unit or Virtual Cockpit while with Columbus you can display map simultaneously on both.

Ok cool! I never use NAV or TRAFFIC buttons as I always go straight to Android Auto / Carplay.

The glove box unit I have is 5Q0035874A.

I've plugged the 3V0919605A display and the buttons light up but the display is all black. Does it need some VCDS coding?

Also, the smaller cable doesn't fit, I guess it's the radio or something right? Don't need that anyways.

Thank you so much for your time guys! this is a great forum!

Sorry, I meant to say I've plugged the 3V0919606 display, which is the one with a balck screen when plugged.

Just take a knife and from the blue plug cut out excessive plastic trim that block you pluging it into black 4-pin socket in display unit

Cool! Was that the reason preventing my new display to properly work? I thought it was just an antenna

make it and you will find out...

MIB1 and you are correct. MIB2 is interchangeable.

@pab567 you are the man! Everything works like magic. Just needed to cut those little plastic molds from the 4-pin cable. It really is plug&play. And I thought I had to spend 900 bucks in a control unit, do some coding and component protection crap. They'll ake my life, but not my bigger display!
