Brake Disc Size

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know the size of the front and rear brake discs on a 2.0TD SE Tech, save me having to remove the wheels to measure them, please??

What brakes are fitted depends on the car's build codes.

The Octavia MK3 2.0TDI 150PS might have 288mm front brakes and 253mm rear brakes, ie. build codes 1ZE and 1KD.

The 288mm and 312mm front brakes use the same brake pads, eg. TRW GDB1956, ATE 13046027852, etc.

Front Brakes

1ZF 276mm TRW

1ZE 288mm TRW

1ZA 312mm TRW

1ZB 312mm TRW (Same as 1ZA, except calipers are red)

1LG 340mm TRW (calipers are red)

Rear Brakes

1KD 253mm TRW

1KS 272mm TRW

1KT 272mm TRW (Same as 1KS, except calipers are red)

1KW 310mm TRW (calipers are red)

Can't you bend a metal rod, coat hanger or similar and use as a caliper to size the discs, then measure.

Not sure if the wheels will allow it though on your car?

I hadn’t actually thought about that. Might be a struggle with my alloys. 😉😆

Looks like it would be easy to me.

U-shaped cutout bit of cardboard with e.g 288mm between inner faces of the u is another easily made measurer.

I know it would be, i was being sarcastic, that’s why i pit the winky face. 😉😊

@fabdavrav, yes 288mm, as you said.

I thought I can swap to 312mm after I remap 150->185hp to match the design of 1.8 TSI 180hp with 312mm

... but reading other threads sounds it's not plug & play kind of task

Yes it is...I did the how to guide on this way back in 2016....all info in first few posts in first page here:-

How to retro-fit the 312mm front brakes to a Mk7 Golf | GOLFMK7 - VW GTI MKVII Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVII Forum

I do advise that you remove one caliper to look at the rear of the housing to make 100% certain it has "57" stamped on it.....as although VAG initially drilled the casting for 57mm pistons to work with the 312mm discs....when they bodged it & used the same piston size on the smaller 288mm discs the result was grabby brakes.....they later re-drilled the casting for a smaller 55mm piston for the 288mm discs.....

My 2014 MQB platform MK7 Golf had the 288mm discs with 57mm pistons....so all I need to do was get the bigger brackets to space the caliper further out to fit the new 312mm discs...

Also you will see that the brackets are left & right handed, & you will always find one side way cheaper than the other....buy two of the cheapest side & swap the pins around on the "wrong" bracket...as that is the only difference in the brackets...

On the Octavia MK3, the 288mm front discs are matched to the smallest 253mm rear discs.

276mm front discs are also matched to these small 253mm rear discs.

312mm front discs are matched to the bigger 272mm rear discs.

By changing from 288mm front discs to 312mm, your front and rear disc sizes will be mismatched.

288mm front discs weigh about 7.3kg each, and 312mm front discs weigh about 8.6kg each. So by changing 288mm front discs to 312mm, you are adding about 2.6kg of unsprung weight to the front of the car.

Skoda are very careful not to fit brakes that are too big or heavy for the car due to the increase in unsprung weight and increase in fuel consumption. The Skoda Scala 1.5TSI 150PS only uses 276x24mm front brake discs. 276x24mm front discs weigh about 6.5kg each, so are even lighter than the 7.3kg 288x25mm front discs. The Skoda Scala is a lighter car than the Octavia MK3, but the 288x25mm front discs are up to the job on the Octavia MK3 just like the 276x24mm front discs are up to the job on the most powerful versions of the Skoda Scala. Most versions of the Skoda Scala use smaller 256x22mm front discs which only weigh about 5.1kg each.

Most of the braking in a car is done by the front discs....rears do very little.....Its not as if they are going up to the 365mm Audi RS discs with 8 pot Brembos from the MQB platform which will fit the MK3 Octavia..

As for increasing the unsprung weight....for the exact same size & type discs different brands quote different weights.....so choose your brand carefully..

Anyway the disc is close to the hub so any increase in weight & rotational mass is not a huge cause for concern..

The factory alloy wheels on the other hand are too heavy...I shed 2kg per wheel (rim & tyre) by swapping from the cheap factory gravity cast alloys to a lighter & same minimum strength "low pressure cast" alloy....in both cases alloys & tyres are the same sizes, etc..

As the "wheel" weight is further away from the hub its better to reduce this weight & rotational mass..

I found the code 1KD on the boot sticker, so that matches and mine is the 150PS. Thanks very much for the breakdown and part numbers, very helpful. 👍🏻

Hi there, where did you find the code please?

I have this sticker in the back and can see 1KS which refers to rear brakes but nothing that aligns with the codes for the front …

The car is a 2015 Octavia Scout …

Not all the build codes are shown on the white label in the spare wheel well area under the carpet.

There might be around 180 build codes in total.

There's a seller on ebay that can supply the build codes. It costs about 3 Euros.

1KS relates to rear disk but i think i found the actual size from the Skoda Octavia Owners Club group on Facebook.

This decoder might help: http://igorweb.org/equidec.aspx

To double double check I measured the discs. 272 rear and 288 front as mentioned.

I’m assuming I need a star socket for the middle hub but - is that right??

Unless you are doing other work, for example bearings, you won't need to undo the hub nuts.

The small retaining screws for the discs will need a Torx head size 30 to undo.
