Idle occasionally rough - reset throttle body?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

2.0tsi, DSG, 2017 MK3 Octavia VRs

Occasionally I get a slight drop in RPM at idle.

On my Audi, I'd plug in the VCDS, run a throttle body reset and all was good.

Can you do this on my car, also with OBD eleven? I have VCDS, but it's old and doesn't talk to all my modules and no doubt it won't talk to that one, but could check.

Interestingly I think I occasionally get the same. Doesn't always do it after first start, sometimes after a bit of driving but often when I switch to neutral at lights it feels like it's misfiring slightly. Is that what you are getting?

A slight drop in RPM at idle is not necessarily something wrong.

There can be no extra load on the battery and the need for a higher RPM.  Maybe not the demand from AC, lights, heated rear screen mirrors etc that might have Stop / Start not operate if it was enabled.

If the car feels rough at the lower RPM then that is a different matter.

Then that needs addressing.

Assuming servicing is all good and good spark plugs / gap, clean air filter etc.

@Dooge yeah, I'd agree with that.

It's definitely rough, it's not a drop in RPM and still smooth.

Just been serviced, was doing it before and after.

My 230 is the same. In fact my wife's old 1.2 tsi Rapid was the same too, so maybe it's a Volkswagen group petrol engine thing?

Just sometimes feels like it's occasionally misfiring at idle. It's always done it and never been an issue.

@RoddersUK What did servicing involve, an Oil & Filter & Inspection service.

Has the car done this from new, how many miles has it done by now and have the spark plugs been replaced and the air filter looked at?

?

Do you run it on E10 95 ron or E5 97 or 99 ron Super Unleaded?

Just out of interest  and unrelated, but does your car have a VAQ Diff and has it had a Service in 2020 or since?

I bought it at 30k mile and now 34k miles.

Didn't do it to start with, noticed it a month ago or just over.

Spark plugs to be changed @60k, so not done. Air filter wasn't done, as done at last service and only done a few thousand, spose to be good for 20k miles. Though I could take a look.

I'd usually change it, but I had a garage do the service to keep my 2 year warranty valid.

Next year I'll be doing it myself.

Normally run it on BP ultimate, but do use Tesco 99 sometimes. Very occasionally E10.

No VAQ diff.

Well worth looking in the Airbox.

An Extended Scope Service that does not look even if it is not scheduled for a change is just part of the Service & Maintenance kidology.

40,000 miles as a replacement period for the spark plug replacement can be OK, even sometimes 60,000 miles the same as an Air Filter change is now.

But they used to be at the 2nd Major Services so at 4 years and not necessarily the car having done 40,000 miles.

This could be a waste of money but then once you had removed the 4 plugs and inspected them it was as well to put in new ones.

Those removed could always be saved for reuse or giving to someone for them to use.

Minimum Octane of 95 or 97/99 is one thing, but around the UK Super Unleaded is not all equal.

Yeah, won't hurt to look/change

Air filter doesn't look too bad, given it a blow out with compressor, not much came out really.

Didn't look at plugs. I'll just change them if I go to the effort of pulling them out 😁
