I need help with sorting some computer settings that have suddenly just been lost.

  Hello,

I need to make it clear at the outset that I have no mechanical or computer skills at all. What would be a very simple fix to someone else is impossible for me, thats just how it is and i need to make that crystal clear. My car is a 2021 Fabia SEL estate. 95 bhp.

When I got my car exactly 14 days ago  i could use the scroll on the wheel to bring up items like the oil temperature,  road speed and remaining range all on the central screen.  I did use this facility regularly but that changed with no warning today. I went over a deep ridge in the road at no more than 20/25mph, it was coming up to a mini roundabout. and the screen literally went crazy. Images flashed on and off, items like nav, there were others. When it stopped going crazy I had the message up saying  infotainment switched off. It hadnt been there once before before  I hit the ridge. It wasnt there when I  collected the car nor at any time until today. I can turn the infotainment on and off and I  can play the radio and could use the sat nav if I wanted to and if I needed it.   When i got home I tried switching off and running the engine to see if that changed anything but it didnt. So I have this permanent message on the central screen when the engine is tunning  I  neither want or need and I cannot display messages that were very useful to me.  If  I now   try using the scroll facility it only brings up a list of  radio stations.  Even a computer thicko like me does not need a  permanent message each time I  start up to tell me the infotainment is switched off when that is blindingly obvious!

So I am asking for an IDIOT GUIDE to sorting this out in GREAT DETAIL, a real step by step guide with nothing at all missed out. I will not be insulted by the fine print being spelt out believe me!  I would guess that the solution lies in one of the buttons on the large screen but I wouldnt have a clue which one it is and what needs doing. I do appreciate some of you may not consider this a big deal: . that the running of the car is not affected etc  but something happened today that removed useful features and replaced them with something decidedly not useful to me and I would like it back to  what it was immediately before I hit the ridge.

Is it possible that the unwanted message will  have  vanished on its own when I next start the engine or is that wishful thinking on my part?

I am also concerned in case messages I do want to see like the front assist coming up to tell me I am too close to the car in front  cannot now get through because of today. I have looked at the car handbook and cannot find anything to do with this that would help.

Look forward to hearing from you with your detailed and specific  step by step suggestions.

Either you've accidently done something when hitting the ridge or there is a problem with your unit/computer(s), electrical or computer connections.

Lets start with the simple one, it's the unit.  As I've probably advised you before, but in case not, read the Driver's Handbook (Owner's Manual) and then refer to it when required such as now.  Photos below are from said online publication, from here. - https://manual.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com/Models

If you're going to have electric stuff always switched on take even more heed of my previous advice (warning) to make sure you do not let your car battery charge drop low as the computers will throw up all sorts of warnings and give you hassle, easily avoided by using a battery maintainer if you don't use the car much or for all short journeys and easily remedied, if you've not left it too late too often, just give the battery a long low slow recharge.

Now back to the main subject - turn the Infotainment back on if it's turned off.

If that doesn't work for some reason on to the troubleshooting, count to 15 as most people rush any given amount of seconds.

HTH and solves your problem.

Have you considered the old fashioned method of looking out of the windscreen? ;)

I wonder if he just needs to press the button on his MFSW to swap centre screen from Nav/Radio/Speed display?

I've no idea, I didn't realise they still had two displays, but I've no idea what's in a 2021 Fabia or any other 2021 car, the 2016 tech already grips my ****.   I assumed (yes making an ass of myself) that as radio stations were being displayed it was on the Infotainment screen in the middle of the dash so that the passenger can be fiddling with the unit whilst the driver concentrates on driving, even twiddling wheels and pushing buttons on the steering wheel seems distracting to me, I don't even like the horn being in the middle of the steering wheel (I'm very old and miserable, a MOB moaning old basket).

I found it a little hard to understand the OP, so I can assume his radio went nuts, followed by I guess the screen in the dash changing from speed to his radio stations.

@hetty1 maybe a picture of what you see will help us understand.

Well actually, is this where you're talking about having missing information, of what you used to see here... B location

You will need to push the buttons on your steering wheel

My mental image was of a thumb, or part palm moving against a scroll wheel or car has some poor connections or when was the chip shortage for perhaps poor quality 'radio' internals or construction.

I'll have a look through the awful Powerpoint type online Handbook and see what it has for 'dot matrix' type screen.

ETA: I missed you'd already done this.

I bet we could name a 1,000 potential faults if we put our collective minds to it.

If the fault is intermittent, then could be a little while in happening again.

Now we just need to hear from OP if our suggestions helped fix immediate issue.

You know my first would low battery charge and/or lose connections.  😁  ETA: That leaves you with 998 or 997 to name as I'm out of ideas already.

Screen to centre of dash dials operated through wheel/dial/button on steering wheel and through Infotainment, far too much info to put here.  ETA: I missed varooom had already posted the images, my machine runs in a different time zone, as does my brain.

Maybe remember to check the warranty and forget that you drove over a ridge on the road.

We could do with an update from the OP as to the possible outcomes.

Very happy to oblige. The salesperson who sold me the car  is on holiday but I contacted a sales  colleague of his and I am going into the Skoda garage to see him this coming Wednesday. He says he believes the menu I was on has been knocked off course and he will put it back and show me how and will give me written instructions to   use if it happened again. He also says he is confident this is not a fault and he can sort it. This sounds OK to me and i will see what actually   happens on Wednesday.

I will of course let you all on Briskoda know what happens and what had to be done to restore the status quo.

Oh, to NTA. I would say I have read the handbook carefully, thats one of the very first things I do when I  buy any car.

            Thanks to everyone who posted.

Sorry I missed that, good on you.

I think your Handbook looks a lot more unnecessarily complicated than the earlier ones.  The one for my wife's car appears to have been written by a German engineering student before it was translated to Chinese and from there into English.  There are some bits in it that even if you know how to do what it tries to explain you can't follow their explanation.  They obviously didn't use the Plain English Campaign for the English version of the Handbooks.

And good on you for keeping an eye on the car's oil temperature, also bear in mind the recent extreme hot weather wouldn't have been good for the car battery so when required recharge it up sooner than later.

As I promised, one update. I took the car into the Fabia garage at the agreed time and it was fixed within a couple of minutes by the salesperson I had arranged to meet. He used the square button to the right of   the button used for scrolling to change the menu from infotainment not working  to the menu I had been on .  He provided 3  steps for me in writing  in case it ever happened again.

He did say one thing that I found very interesting and that was that several customers every week contacted them to sort this very same problem out.

         Thanks.

 Hello all.

You will remember I posted a few weeks ago about menus on the car suddenly disappearing and being replaced by another menu. I said at the time that I thought this happened each time after hitting a ridge/pothole. The Skoda garage  have since shown me to get back to the original menu  and it is very easy but that begs the question of what on earth is happening? In just nine weeks this has happened five times and it is not even as though the same menu replaces each time. I like having the display on driving data up because it gives me useful stuff like the engine oil temperature and the long term fuel consumption.  That has been replaced by such disparate menus as infotainment system switched off; by front assist ticked to show it is activated; by mobile phone needs to be switched on to this menu. So three separate menus and the with  last two I did not even hit a ridge etc,

i was told by a member of the  sales staff that they were confident it was not a fault and I am not criticising anyone , they have been very helpful to me. However, it could be a fault because when I contacted the service department at the dealership to put them in the picture they immediately arranged for it to be  booked in to be investigated under warranty.  I didnt ask for that, They took the decision. I am sure some people would find it really distracting to have that happen in front of them and that cant be good safety wise. The service department also said they hadnt come across this yet I was also told by sales staff that this was a common query, that several people a week had made contact to ask what was happening and how to change the menus back. So something is definitely  strange here.

The car is booked in for early next month. I will do a note of what has happened and what has been said and I will hand that in to service reception when I go in. I hope they can find the cause and I hope it gets sorted. If it does recur( or they cant find anything wrong) that will definitely make me wonder if quality control is not all it should be on the facelifted Skoda   Fabia mark 3 range.

I will definitely keep you posted. Looking forward to reading your posts on this.

I do recall you posted about it occurring.  It might have been an idea to carry on the old thread?

Anyhow, does seem like a momentary break in power causing a brief power loss that might be affecting the various modules, or a pinched wire shorting out.

Hopefully they can find something.

@hetty1

Has some other helpful person at the dealership taken 10 minutes to show you how the systems work and how to choose screens and to use the scroll wheel on the steering wheel?

They have usually never heard of it before, or 'they all do that'.

That is because the Sales People were maybe selling white goods or doing some other job just recently and know nothing about cars really.

Book them in and put them in the hands of the Service Desk Staff who know even less, and might get told something by an actual Technician who might have seen it before, or actually seen it and fixed it.

It might be a coincidence or you might be wrong about this but I'm with varooom that it seems like it might be a faulty wire or connection somewhere but of course never rule out a computer issue so it needs investigating as you know if you might have caused it by accident.

I think if the sales people had been selling white goods, computers or sound systems before it might be an advantage in this case as you practically need an Honours degree in electronics to set a washing machine or open a fridge door with modern home appliances because of the very clever but often unnecessary complications on them so anyone with experience of them might stand a chance with the very clever and often unnecessary complicated VW systems.

Be interesting to hear the result, this issue with your car might be a first, or another "first".

Good luck.

Hello,

This is Hetty 1updating my fellow Briskodians. I told the service department about it and they said they were unaware of the problem  and the car needed to come into the workshop  to be investigated under warranty. So an appointment was made and I got a courtesy car for free; they normally charge to put you on the groups  insurance. I got it back late this afternoon and they said the problem is sorted. They did an update apparently. I forgot to ask them for a copy of what was done so I cant tell you any more than that. I will try to get a copy though and I will happily share the contents. These might not mean much to the likes of me  but I am sure it will to  some readers of this post.

 Thanks.
