Is there an easy fix for my inoperative seat belt warning light?

Featured Replies

                    Hello,

I dont see this as  a big deal but the warning light for the front passenger seat belt being deployed has never worked ( I think) since I bought the car, a 2017 Fabia  SEL 110 estate  in January 2020. The drivers side works fine. I rarely carry passengers in the rear so dont know if the warning operates there. I could ask my wife to sit in the back and not deploy her belt and see if the light comes on when the engine is running. In a way that would make it even more puzzling though .  I understand from the spec that both front and rear seatbelts are supposed to carry a warning if they are not deployed.. Or  the relevant  bulb could have simply failed of course.

I am wondering if this could be a menu item and if I could reinstate the warning myself. I cant see it as being something I can do via the scroll on the wheel as I have never seen any reference to seat belts when I have scrolled  through to see items like distance travelled, oil temperature, speed etc. I have been into the menu but only to look at the front assist( to see if I can change the distance before the assist starts working) the TPMS to enter pressures for storing, average fuel consumption, etc, never to see if seatbelts are in the menu.   i  honestly cant see anyone deliberately disabling an important safety warning like this but who knows? . If it is only  a failed bulb  I dont know how to find the failed bulb and replace it and the same applies to a failed sensor if thats the answer.

Could this be something for VCDS? I cant access that but if I know this can be used to get the light reinstated I can ask my independent to sort it if they have access when they service the car  next week.  I dont intend to spend  money on this but if there is a simple fix that even I can understand and carry out that would be good.

                            Thanks.

Just look left. Is there someone in the seat. Look at the seat belt, are they wearing it?   Job done and cost nothing.

Doesn't have to be VCDS, but a higher level scan tool might give info, or a human mechanic who CBA using his senses may be able to sort it, even without that luxury of a higher level scan tool but it might speed things up.

Please excuse my confusion, are you saying that the alarm is always going off regardless when the seat is empty and occupied or is it now showing the seatbelt being plugged in or the warning beep going off when in motion and the passenger hasn't putt heir seatbelt on?

Apart from me being confused I always say for seat issues check the physical plugs under the seat as you may find the connection from the seat to the car has been disturbed? - They can sometimes disconnect from racking the seat back and forth over time.

What I am saying is that the warning light does NOT come on when my wife is sitting in the passenger seat and accidentally forgets to put her seatbelt on while the engine is running. I have accidentally done the same while the engine is running  and my light DOES come on in those circumstances. The specification for my car says it has warning lights for both front and rear passengers when their seatbelts are not deployed. I dont know yet whether they work for any rear passengers  I will ask my wife to sit in the back without putting her seatbelt on  on with the engine running  while I am in the drivers seat and see if the rear warning lights come on or not. Thanks for your responses.

There have been threads in the past, recently in the MK2 section about seat belt warnings.  The owner's manuals and even brochures talked about front seats and rear seats but this was not all Trim Models or in all world region and Ireland / EU could  be different from the UK / EU models.   If any were to have both front seats with seat belt warnings I would expect that an SEL would .   Others with a 2017 SEL could maybe say what their car has.  And if the rears have.     PS, for me just a Man bag and the Deicer on the passenger seat of any vehicle is enough to have the no seat belt fastened warning on.    My rear seat belts are always plugged in because the shopping he to put on the rear seats.

Could it be the sensor in the seat that shows a person is sitting in the seat has failed Joe

  • Author

 Joe,

You could well  be correct. However, since I last replied earlier today my wife sat in the rear and shifted sides while the engine was running and no light came on in the display either time. We went out for a run and this time my wife sat in the front passenger seat and didnt use the belt and again no light came on. When I drove at approx 30 mph and took my belt off while driving I got the light come up immediately and there was also a "bong". Nothing at all  happened when my wife took her seatbelt off while on the same run. Both light and audible warning went off when I put my belt back on. So I do agree with you but sensors must have failed in 3 separate seats judging by what happened today. The sensor is clearly fine in my seat so the most used seat works but not those lesser used seats; it all seems  very strange.

When I originally posted on this I said that I thought VCDS mighr be involved. Quite by chance I went into a post of April 12th last year by J Grindel  "The definitive VCD/.OBD11/Carista List for the Fabia 111".  That contained among many other items a reference to seat belt warning lights. The author went to great pains to state that it was highly inadvisable to change anything relating to seat belts on obvious safety grounds but even so  it proves that these warning lights can be changed. They shouldnt be but they can be.  As 3 of mine have failed it seems a definite possibility that someone did change them. did delete them  through VCDS. Either the previous owner if they had access to VCDS or , maybe, a mechanic at the request of the owner. I suppose its just possible they could have been deleted accidentally but I can buy that for 1 or even 2 but for 3??

I certainly havent changed anything, I dont even know how to, but I increasingly think I bought the car in January 2020 with 3 warning lights disabled. I cant think why anyone would want to tamper with such a  safety feature but the more I think about it I think someone did.

             Thanks.

People have dogs in cars and maybe not belter in so that can be a reason to disable seat belt warnings.

Both 2017 Fabia Owner's Manuals refer to "Front seat belt warning light", see below.

This is another brief update and also asking a favour. My dealership said it would cost me £144 to have the Volkswagen diagnostic system checked. I cant afford that and wont be taking that up. The favour  is asking if any Briskodian who  has access to VCDS could check whether the 3 seat belt warning lights in question have been disabled. I can supply the VIN if that is required, its too dark now to see that on the car parked outside. If that is the case is it possible to make them active again by ticking boxes on the computer? If that is possible I would happily buy that person a drink. If none of it is possible I will live with the current situation and just forget that the car is supposed to have 4 seat belt warning lights.

As i said at the beginning     I know this isnt a big deal in the scheme  of things and I accept that sometimes cars have problems that cannot be sorted out without a disproportional amount of both time and money being expended.

Thanks to everyone who posted to try to help me.

For rear seat passengers out of interest I have just done a test on my wife's 2015 MK3.

I sat in driver's seat my wife in a rear seat, I started the car and put my seat belt on but my wife on the back seat did not.

There was the usual three (empty) back seats diagram in the dot matrix part of the dash, no bleeps or warnings as such.

I then got my wife to put her back seat belt on as I drove and the three back seat diagram appeared on the dash again but this time showing the seat she was sitting in with the seat belt fitted and then the three back seats diagram went out.

I then asked her to take her back seat belt off and the usual three (empty) back seats diagram reappeared.

So that sequence seems to be the warning system for back seat passengers, I so infrequently drive the car and even less so with rear seat passengers plus it is my habit not to drive off until all passengers and myself are wearing seat belts.

HTH with regards to rear seat passengers at least.

Anyone with the correct level of up to date scan tool appropriate to your car should be able to tell you what you need to know , have a look on this map to see if anyone near you with VCDS is able and willing to help you. - https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?msa=0&mid=1Td73_uUUqscV3nRm5br_o89PmBU&ll=24.91828661129606%2C35.69278626728145&z=3

You don't need to give the VIN as the machine will pick it up when plugged in.

Have a look at this

I want to thank both  Freedom Lite and Nige8021 for their responses. Taking the former first, I hadnt really looked for the  3 empty seats diagram but I will do from now.  I would definitely  have expected an occupied but unbelted rear seat to have triggered a visual warning or an audible warning or both but that is clearly not the case.  It would not have occurred to me to see the 3 seats diagram to change to show one is occupied and is belted  then to revert to the 3 empty seats but that clearly is what happens. I will play close attention when I next drive it to check that the 3 seats diagram is there and I will ask my wife to replicate what his  wife did, ie sit in the rear without bucking up then buckle up both while I am driving  and check that my system works as his did. If the test shows it does then that is how the rear seat system is meant to workand I only have the one query, the passenger seat. That is a big improvement on 3. . I have to say I do find the absence of either audible or visual warning or both when an occupied rear seat passenger is not belted up strange and not what  I would have expected but if that is how the system works so be it. I am very  grateful to both him and his wife for testing out the rear seat system.

Turning to Nige 8021 his suggestions are again much appreciated. Unfortunately, my computer didnt show the map provided in enough detail for me to identify a possible source of help. Its the fault of my computer alone not his map. So I am  saying  that I live on the  Wirral Peninsula and my car is a 17 plate, first registered June 30th 2017. I   give the age of the car purely to help anyone who might want to contact so they can check their system would be, in fact, helpful and it could save them a wasted journey.

That might well be as far as this particular query can go, time will tell. If it is I have definitely learnt more about how the warning system operates and that cannot in itself  be a bad thing.

Using the map the two nearest that I can see are -

@PeteHuws - Chester

@tunedude - Liverpool

If you hover your cursor over the name(s) above you will get a box appear, bottom left click on the 'Message' button to send a message.

HTH.

 Freedom Lite,

I really appreciate your latest post. Unfortunately, I did hover over both names and I did get the box to appear but no  "message" button appeared so couldnt send a message. Both my wife and I tried this and she is definitely  more computer  proficient than I am . This will be our computer system once again showing its shortcomings, we have had a lot of trouble with issues like erratic broadband and is certainly no reflection on what you have provided. It has proved impossible to diagnose the problem so rectification is equally impossible. So i am not going to try to take this any further.

i will, though, be following your tips on testing the rear belts, starting tomorrow when we go out for lunch.  They are very full and very useful.

Although I am closing this post I have learnt a lot about the car seatbelt warning system and some of it has been a real surprise so most definitely worthwhile from my point of view.

             Thanks to everyone who posted.

What is it which you're needing doing sorry?

@hetty1 was after someone to plug in an appropriate level scan tool to see if the passenger seat belt warning has been disabled for any reason (or if it might show up wiring/communication/connector fault) as the warning light does not come on when his wife is sitting in the passenger seat and accidentally forgets to put on her seatbelt.

A full scan report is always useful too and perhaps clear any historical codes that have been missed.

For whatever reason @hetty1isn't able to see the 'Message' button to contact you directly.

He's in the Wirral which looked to me to be not too far from Liverpool but I don't know the area at all.

I'll leave it with you both now.
