New Turbo

Featured Replies

Hi my sons car has lost all power and I've been told that it's the turbo.

can anyone help?

Do i by a new turbo or reconditioned one and where from etc where can I take it to be fixed? I live in Essex. Any advice will be very grateful.

Thanks

Hello James, please can you tell us what engine (TSI/TDI) and what engine code? (3 or 4 character)

Personally, I'd look for a reputable turbo rebuilder (on exchange)

My only experience for this was when the turbo failed on my Draco 24 - (Volvo Penta AQAD40B engine) which I exchanged with one from a specialist in Wimbledon.

Hi I'm not sure on the engine code it's a 1.9td

Check your V5 registration document

Check the engine number, the VIN or the specification sticker (boot or manual).

So many more detials are required -

Who has told you the turbo has failed, how have they diagnosed it, what are the symptoms?

If youre gonna replace a turbo, youll want a garage to change it and 99% of garages will supply the turbo and fitting a second hand one, youll struggle to find a garage willing to do it, or at least they wont warrant it.

Its also not as simple as replace the turbo, you need to find out what has failed and the reason, else it will just happen again.

To be fair if it's a Mark 1 1.9 TDI then it's a PD100 and probably an ATD, whilst turbo failure is less common on the PD100 it's not unheard of and a reconditioned unit would be the way forward to minimise costs.

But it certainly would pay to get a reliable diagnosis of the fault. Could it be possible it's something simple like a blown hose?

It would be in the best interests of the OP to return to the thread with Engine Code and all other questions answered.

@Warrior193 just a single vacuum line down will stop turbo from working, and the turbo actuator (external) that controls the vanes also could be stuck in one position, making it run like a bag of spanners.

I've had a vacuum line left off by mechanic in the past, and and turbo actuator fail (diaphragm splits)

I am out at the moment but I will get the engine code when i get home, the car is in the garage the mechanic said the turbo is definitely  knackered, the shaft has collapses and the bearings gone,  hes a very reliable mechanic I can trust I've used him loads of times before, always goes that extra mile

Brilliant, when back home - engine code, year and mileage should be what's needed.

Unless someone wants other information.

@jamessharr @varooom Maybe the type of the turbo, since that may not be original?

Hi all sorry for taking so long to message back on here. My car is a 2006/7 1.9 BLT engine

Here are some details found for your turbo and engine code that might help you.

The part 21 in this image was one of the possible points of failure, where it can not longer hold vacuum or becomes stuck in place

The test process is attached as PDF

Checking Vacuum Actuator.pdf

Checking your part number shows it was dropped and replaced with new part number

As seen now in the parts program

It might be a good idea to expand your post to include symptoms of what performance if any you get from the turbo, and what diagnostic steps were taking if possible to identify the failure.

This has some prices for parts, but does depend on garage as some will not like fitting customer supplied parts.  At least you can see what you could be paying for just the turbo alone.

Ok, so it's a VRS, why didn't you say so in the first place!

In that case turbo failures are common and you'll need to shop around for a good deal, you could maybe find a decent GT1749VB secondhand to replace it.

In fairness, if Sepulchrave happens to be using a mobile device at the time then you can't see that little tab, or signatures. So it's handy to have it in the original post, IMO/IME. :)

I am indeed using a mobile device and that information is obviously not available otherwise I wouldn't ask, I'm known for being rude, not stupid!

It's not stupid for you to have missed something and I did consider that possibility (you decide which or both) but I know you don't like too many words in a post so kept to one thing only.  And the information is available, and you didn't ask, you're blaming the OP for your failing(s) in both.

Thanks.  As I put (even without ever using these mobile devices) I did consider the possibility that the post information might be truncated, but you'll learn sometimes you have to treat like with like.  😉  Anyway I want to see what Engineer's Excuse might be used from their training reference manual, wasn't expecting the revision number or date of but perhaps to speed things up just the reference code to the excuse so it can be looked up if wanted.

Nice to see another admission of self-awareness - we'll 'ave 'im 'ugging a tree yet, if not ever house-trained. 😊

I'm having trouble finding a turbo cos it's a blt engine apparently there less common.  So is the gt 1749vb a straight swap?

Plenty of turbos out there, did you miss my post with part number 038 253 010?

Edit: Not saying buy from this place, as I don't know them, make sure you do checks before you buy, warranty etc.
