Octavia MkIV 1.5TSI Engine rattle

Dear all, I may be a little paranoid, but my MKIV Octavia 1.5TSI (2020) with just under 30,000 miles on the clock is sounding like this whilst idling.  Is this a 'Normal' sound for these engines or is it something sinister, such as piston slap - The sound is worse when starting from cold.  Also the idle is a little rougher than I would have expected from a modern 4 cylinder petrol engine - It was Dealer serviced about 250 miles ago.  Thanks, Alan

Hi again, I apologise for replying to my own Post, but I am unable to edit it!  I just wanted to add that this is my first petrol vehicle for 15 years or so, my previous cars were 2.0 TDI's, hence my concern regarding engine noise etc.  - My last petrol engine car was a 1999 Felicia 1.3!

Haven't heard anything unusual here, but i admit i used laptop speakers.

If you are referring to this "diesel-like" sound of the engine, this is perfectly normal for modern petrols. They are using high pressure direct injection now (350 bar in 1.5 TSI), and this sound is partly/mostly due to injectors as far as i know.

Hi, thank you for responding and putting my mind at rest (Laptop speakers are more than capable of reproducing the engine noise)  My old Felicia had a single injector into the inlet manifold - Not quite in the same league!

 

@AlanOsborne. Have you checked the oil level since the car was serviced,. Cold dip, then when the engine is at operating temp. So about 90*oC oil temp on the flat after stopped a few minutes.  ?  Was it VW 508 00/ 509 00 oil used at the service, so  0w 20 FS IV or maybe VW504 00 /507 00, 0w 30 FS or 5w 30 FS III ?

Hi I checked the oil level yesterday having driven for about 20 miles and leaving the car for 5 minutes for the oil to drain back to the sump - it was almost at the upper end of the 'Hatched' area of the dip-stick.  The oil used was C5 VW 0w20 (Miller Oils XF Premium fully synthetic).  Thanks Alan

i have diesel skoda vrs octavia,my son in law who works in the industry got me 1 litre top up oil but it was   0 -20 he said his friend who works for vw said for new diesel engines across the vag range.this what should be put into them engines.?

0w 20 FS IV has been filled from the factory to almost every engine TSI or TDI since before WLTP certification was required.   With  TDI,s it is used for fixed or variable services.  Not all TSI,s need to have Long Life oil if they are getting fixed interval oil and filter changes.

My 2022 1.5TSI sounds the same, It is high pressure injector noise.

I first heard this back in 2002 when I was given an A2 loan car while my S3 was in for service - I commented that it sounded like a diesel and learnt that it was typical of a direct injection petrol system so any FSI, TFSI, etc.

Normal, VW call this 2nd gen common-rail (petrol).

It is amazing what some call or accept as normal.

 

When people get a not noisy 1.5 TSI they obviously got an abnormal one, luckily. 

(Or maybe need a hearing test!)

 

VW504 00 / 507 00 so 5w 30 FSIII might just make a difference to the noise,

rather than the VW508 00 / 509 00, 0w 20 FS IV that VW went to for the WLTP / RDE results. 

 

Customers / owners are told to expect and accept it from 4 cylinder TSI's with or without GPF's.

They like to BS. 

Sometimes eventually a software update becomes available to deal with something that was never an issue...

Unfortunately it also makes the car not very pleasant to drive as if you don`t wait until rpm drop below 1k the car jerks and likes to jump. Its funny when I have to drive it out in the morning and I get out of my garage with a jump and at higher speed (due to higher rpm).

 

So, at the end the emissions directive and supplementing acts would now make every 1.5tsi driver have their engine idle for like 45 seconds. This is as brilliant as the idea to put cap on russian gas prices. Sometimes I am amazed by the output of the smart people in the EU governing body.

As I mentioned previously, direct injection petrol engines have a tendency to sound like a diesel, principally because of the high pressure direct injection.

They're not quite as bad nowadays as the 2002 Audi A2 I experienced as a loan car (the injection now tends to be multiple small bursts rather than one single big burst which improves the burn as well as reducing the noise).

I have the same, it turns out surprise surprise on this Octavia generation to be now a known issue, either one or both will need to be replaced - drive belt / pulley, mines due in the shop for this

Except there was no issue here. It's normal injector noise and has nothing to do with the drive belt or pulley.

I own the same engine, has 22k on the clock from new. Not used a drop of oil so far & yes that engine sounds normal to me, too. 

When people say they have the same engine they might mean they have a 1.5 TSI ACT EVO. 

If it is the same as an early or later engine is what matters really.  It is great when people have en engine that VW group develop from the R&D that paying customers did for them because they had to mess about to get them WLTP certificated.

Intresting, so looking at my engine, it's the DADA type? 

Mine is a 68 plate, 19 reg car. Although I've experienced no kangerooing from a cold start (fortunately), but mine is a dsg, so may reduce this effect. I did know about this issue, prior to buying my car, but didn't realise that there were two variants to this engine.

Yes garages tend to use the 5w 30 oil, too, as it's cheaper than the 0w 20 oil. 

I'm new to Skoda, having driven mainly Vauxhalls from the 80's, onwards. Their newer type gdi engines are certainly no better, in fact a lot worse with regards to their general reliability. Reason I decided to jump ship.

This is something new, that they started installing only this year to some cars.

We have 1.5 TSI. They messed up naming, as 1.5 TSI is EA211 EVO, but it's NOT 1.5 TSI EVO :)

Anyway they were installing DADA even after WLTP certification. I had DADA engine with GPF in 2018 Ateca.

I think they started installing DPCA in new generation cars like O4, Golf 8 and Leon MK4.

Exactly why people saying they have the same engine might well not. 

 

If reading on a phone unless going to someones profile you might not know what car or age of car they show there. 

Then a 1.5 TSI Mild Hybrid might well behave pulling away differently from a 1.5 TSI with a DQ200 or Manual.

They did introduce them with the intention of dropping just the 1.5 TSI & DQ200 without electric assistance, it just has not happened yet.

For Euro 7 emissions they will need to drop that combination.

It has not happened, as adding starter-generator increases production cost, so would also have to increase car price.

At least this is how Skoda representatives were explaining why mHEV is not available in some cars.

Seems that with Euro 7 a lot of smaller cars will disappear from the market, as they will not be profitable enough, or will just be too expensive (compared to what they offer).

& they have the Average Emissions required to stop paying penalties by Partnering with MG & their owners and Geely.

 

Only issue is that the EV's builds and First Registrations has slowed and VW Group could be up the creek with how many all ready First Registered of their ICE vehicles in the EU and the UK.

So they might need to ration what gets registered the rest of this year and next year.    They need more Low Emission & Zero Emission cars first Registered and they have not enough of their own.
