My Clutch Doesnt like the cold.

Featured Replies

On the last 2 really icy mornings we've had up here (this morning and the the day we went to Duxford) my clutch pedal has been reluctant to rise from the floor without a little help from either my hand or foot.

Once pulled up, its fine afterwards.

Anyone else had this "problem" ?

Cheers :)

Sounds vaguely familiar. The master cylinder? I'll try a search in a mo.

not that major but a right b'stard of a job.

This has happened to me 2 or 3 times last year on the 4x4 during cold weather and a couple of times recently this year.(known in our house as flaccid clutch pedal syndrome)

Customer service advised last year "It is possible in very cold conditions for the internal seals on any hydraulic cicuit to shrink and allow fluid to seep past. However, once warm it will operate as normal".

Good job it never happens on my brake circuit then!!!

This is another item to go on my snagging list, hopefully to be sorted out when I get my new coils.

So they only design cars for warm climates?

Just as well the aviation industry has got that problem sorted........

flaccid clutch pedal syndrome

Geoff,

Forgive me if I've got this all wrong but vRS's have cable clutches not hydraulic so no master and slave cylinders. Mine needs foot underneath pedal sometimes when left overnight to help the return spring mechanism. Doen't seem to be temperature dependant.

My carpet binds on my pedal, as mat as curled up...leaves the clutch pedal restricted.

Possibly not the same isue, but you never know ;)

The missus drives the car infrequently and has complained of this twice. Never has it happened to me. I put it down to some bizarre driving technique she must have, but I guess I'll have to give her more credit.

Colin and Mrky Mark,

No,that was the first thing I checked. The matt that comes with the car is actually fixed at the clutch pedal end to avoid catching. I seem to recall my dealer sayng he hadn't heard of any common prob. on the vRS. Defo a cable clutch though.

Hmmm..

Most peculiar.

As i said, both times it happened have been on VERY cold nights / mornings.

First time it was jammed in gear till i sussed what was wrong (Panic !)

Second time there was just enough movement to drive the car. I initially put it down to getting straight out of the van & into the car, but eventually it didnt feel right so i reached down & pulled the pedal up.

I'll go have a word at the dealers while i'm off for :xmas:

ETKA shows the Octavia as having a clutch master cylinder and a clutch slave cylinder. The latter comes in 2 versions - one for shift cable operated clutches and the other for rod operated clutches.

Geoff,

Those are exactly the symptoms I have had. As I always leave it in gear its not so much a disengagement problem as much as the pedal just doesn't return to the top. Once the problem did make the whole disengagement point right near the floor and gear changng was all wrong but after I lifted the pedal back up it all returned to normal.

Let me know what your dealer says as mine taked the view if you can't show them the problem they can't give you an answer.

I haven't had this problem for a while now, it was back in the summer I think. I will ask when my dealer when mine has its next service whether they have had any more reports. I believe something causes the release spring to get hung up.

Hope your cough gets better soon. Everyone I know has had it darn sarth.

The nephew & his dad have gone down with this "Asian Flu" that's going around, it's knocked them for six...

As for seeing my dealer, i'll try & call in on friday, as it looks like we won't be doing much that day, site closes at 11 am :D

I'll let you know what (if anything) they say.

Dennis,

Having checked under the bonnet I must apologise, those cables I had seen are the gear change mechanism and sure enough underneath them is the slave cylinder.

Geoff,

Will ask my dealer about the pedal return, as it still happens occasionaly.

Chris, it happened again to mine this morning.

Still haven't been to the dealers though. Continuing to cough like a Ford on a cold morning. (Me that is, not the car ;) )

How cold does it need to be for this flaccid clutch pedal problem. It has happened with my car two or three times (last winter) but not had any problem so far. Is this because it now sleeps peacefully in a garage a night, but then again, down here on the south coast, we haven't had any real frosty weather yet...... :santa2:

I've only seen it after a particularly heavy frost or after snow.

I'm currently working on the assumption that if i have to scrape the windscreen, then i need to check the clutch pedal when i get in

Having said that, it was -5C last night and the clutch pedal was ok. Confused? Indeed i am.
