Aero inserts on 19” Alloys

Featured Replies

I bought bolt covers & centre caps ahead of taking delivery of my SEL Edition. But having popped one of the covers off, I'm now not so sure, as there's so much brake caliper & disc on show.

Given they're plastic and not intended to be constantly taken off/on I can't see why they would damage the alloy. ( assuming both the trims and the alloy are 100% free of grit when mounting them that

What alloys do you have on? Having bought a second hand sportline 2.5 years old and 6k on the clock, I can see signs of minor damage where the aero inserts were sat, as dirt and grime built up between them and the wheel. I you plan on keeping the car, or care, I’d keep them off!

Procyon. Maybe I'll take another look thanks.

No great hassle to take off the plastic, and wash the wheels, when washing the car, even if you only do it every fourth wash. Nothing worse than being a technician, removing plastic to remove wheel, and getting a dirt shower!

Had another look this evening but the caps I bought from Amazon, as linked by @Psicho1986, are too small. I've measured them at 50mm internal, which is what the genuine Skoda part number seems to be. Reading the reviews it seems to be a common problem. So not sure if it's variable quality or my Procyon wheels are odd. The latter seems unlikely.

My first post here, so hello to everyone.

I'm about to buy a nearly new SE L Edition.

These now come with the 'Hydrus' alloy wheel, and the dealer (who is sourcing the car from Skoda stock) indicated that mine (April 2025 with 800 miles on the clock) would have these. He based this off the online specs; he hasn't see the car. They didn't actually have a SE L Edition on site - my test drives were with the SE L (with 'Procyon').

A quick check has shown me that the vast majority of the 'Edition' cars still appear to have the 'Procyon' wheels, and I very much doubt that mine (which will be arrving in a couple of days or so) will be any different. There do appear to be a few around with the 'Miran' wheel which looks fine.

So, what to do?! I've only put down a refundable £99 deposit. I can cancel this and wait 6 months until a 'Hydrus' wheel car becomes available. Or I can take this car and take the aero inserts out; if I did this I'd insist the dealer supplied and installed the new caps etc. Or I suppose I could see if he can source one with 'Miran' wheels.

My feeling is to cancel and wait - or am I being too fussy like my wife thinks?

Something you could try is ask the dealer if they have a new SE in stock with the 17" & see if they'd be willing to swap. I wish I'd done that.

The Procyon look dreadful without the cheese graters IMO. In common with many modern wheel designs there's far too little metal, leaving the disc rotors & calipers far too visible. Additionally there's a channel around the rim for the cheese grater to fit into which is nigh impossible to clean of brake dust because it's so small. So I've left them on & have been looking for a set of 17"s.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, actually that's an option I'd explored with the dealer prior to deciding on the used SE L. I could get a decent deal on the new SE Edition, but went for the better SE L spec (albeit, used).

As I understand it, the only significant differences between SE and SE L ('editions') are adaptive cruise vs standard cruise, electric boot, and Columbus vs Amundsen infotainment. Pluse 17 inch wheels which I'd probably prefer anyway.

Did you get the center cap size from somewhere? If not i can try to help you

@Philly112

You've misunderstood me. What I'm suggesting is a simple wheel swap with an SE, not downgrading your purchase. So you keep the SEL & the dealer gets a free upgrade of his SE. I'm kicking myself that I didn't think of this before signing off on my SEL.

If that's aimed at me then thanks, but I've largely given up on the idea for the reasons stated.

What a great suggestion!

Thanks, I might well give that a shot.

Great forum this😄

@Philly112

Just to add that my SEL Edition with Procyon was built late March. When I started looking to buy in June, the web site was still listing Procyon wheels as the only standard option. So I'd be pretty confident that an April car will also have them.

Yes me too. I'll find out later today.

Interestingly, the downloadable Karoq brochure on the website still lists Procyon as standard. But it's not actually possible to configure a new car for order with those wheels, it's either Hydrus (std) or Miran (option).

And I actually don't think that the 'new ex stock' car that the dealer was trying to sell me would have had Hydrus; I think Skoda are trying to clear out their stock by end September and these appear to have Procyon (judging from a quick 20 minutes on Autotrader).

Yes, it was the configurator I was going by. Weirdly the configurotor for Karoq disappeared completely while I was searching. I thought that might mean the end of the line but it was while they chaged the wheels & removed Brilliant Silver as an option.

If it helps, I paid £28.3k OTR for my unregistered SEL Edition with a spare wheel & variable boot floor. Although they did try to sell me £2k of indemnities for paint, wheels, tyres & other stuff.

Just spoken to the dealer. They're going to change the Procyon wheels (which it does have) to either the Hydrus or Miran which will be on an ex demonstrator car that they're getting in shortly. Probably won't have any choice between the two, but I like both of them, and far better than the plastic ones. The dealer was fine, at the end of the day they want to sell me a car!

He did say that Skoda didn't really start shipping SE L's without Procyon until July this year. So very few used ones available. Probably could have done with this information prior to ordering, but hey ho, it appears to OK now.

Just make sure the wheels from the ex demonstrator are in perfect condition and have been cleaned on the face side and the inside properly. You wouldn't want wheels that have been damaged by the many people who have driven the ex demonstrator in the past or by sales staff who quite often take these cars for their personal use (and who aren't in the slightest bit bothered about damage they cause to them).

Quick update...

I've cancelled the order, and have bought a new one exstock. Moon White, 1.5 DSG. The deals on new cars are actually pretty good, albeit without the ability to choose any add ons which weren't already on the car. There were some available with 'good' extras (eg matrix headlights, winter package plus) but either the price was too much or the colour was wrong.

It's got the Hydrus alloys I wanted, other than that, ity's the stock car (as was the used one).

Many thanks for your help - I have absolutely no doubt I will be requesting more assistance once I try and get to grips with the infotainment (coming from a 2018 Fiesta, new cars are like moving from a Sinclair Spectrum to an Apple Mac)

That's why I included what I paid. I had no intention of buying a new car, but the differential between the discounts on new & what dealers were asking for year old cars was minimal.

Might be an idea to start each new journey with all the "aids" switched off for now, so you can concentrate solely on getting used to the rest. Having switched from a Polo myself, just getting used to the size of the thing takes a while!

I still get caught out when trying to pull in after overtaking on a dual carriageway without indicating, & having to wrestle the steering wheel. 🙄
