What to go for - 1.9 or 2.5?

Featured Replies

Hi folks. New member and, hopefully, soon to join the ranks of Superb owners. Will be buying one shortly but my question is whether to go for the 1.9 auto or 2.5 auto. Will be in Elegance spec. I have a 40 mile daily commute which is split 50/50 Motorway / Inner city. Spent a day in the 1.9 and loved it, only issue was the heavy steering on the test car. Dealer says they can change set up (up to 6 settings). Will re-test for another day. Also plan to have a go in a 2.5 as research suggest this has greater refinement than 1.9 though, obviously, less MPG. So open question to you folks - what to go for?. I really favour refinement but is the 2.5 auto that much better? If so, what sort of mpg do you get?

Hi and welcome

Are we talking new here? If so, there's a difference in the ONR price of around

You can get the 2.0TDI in the superb now as well if you are buying new

Guys, very slightly off topic but how do the above mentioned engines; 1.9. 2.0 and 2.5 tdi engines respond to remapping?

Cheers,

Lee

The 1.9 and 2.0 apparently show bigger improvements when remapped than the 2.5

Having spotted a Superb owner with the 2.5 getting a phase 1, very well :)

My 1.9 has got all the toys I could ever want (except solar sunroof) and gives me 50+ Mpg on a run. My daily commute is 10 miles which is 50:50 as yours is. I get around 42 MPG on this commute.

As for remmapping, I've got a £250 Dragon Digital and gives me around 170 BHP which is roughly what the 2.5 would give you.

I paid less than £10k for my 30 month old Superb, so you can get the spec for a good price if you travel

Not avalible with Auto'box :thumbdwn:

Haveing drivern both 1.9 and 2.5 auto's, I would go for the 2.5

Just feels nice:cool:

I could be wrong, but as far as I know, here in Ireland, you can't get the 2.0 as an auto. Might be able to in the UK tho:confused:

I was in the same situation as yourself when I recently bought my Superb Elegance. I went for the Manual 1.9 PD Diesel as I had had 3 previous Superbs and liked the economy and the performance especially after having them Re-mapped. Makes the car more drive-able but gives you that extra "Kick" when you need it. Helps the fuel economy too depnding on how you drive 48mpg if your in a hurry or in town to nearly 60 mpg if your keeping to 70 on the motorway. As your having the Auto I would tend to say go for the V6 but dont expect fuel economy. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Thanks to all for taking time to reply. Will let you know how it turns out after test drives. Will be new and has to be auto. After dealer discounts both come in just under £20k and that includes Met. paint and solar roof. All UK dealer supplied. Interestingly there is "only" £600 difference between the two. Solar roof sounds good - does it work? Also has anyone else had the dealer change the steering settings? Great value. Hadn't even thought about remapping but you have you me doing it now ! cheers .

Although mine is a 6 speed manual, I can vouch for the remap on the 2.5 TDi. Just had Custom Code Phase 1. Tis bloody brilliant.. :D

I had my heart set on a 1.9. Then I made the mistake of testing the 2.5, and i found it so much more respnsive because of its bucket load of torque. A great car to overtake in. So I ended up with the 2.5 this time last year and have not regretted it for one minute since.

The problem with the 2.8 petrol is not so much the additional fuel but the greatly increased depreciation. Have a look in a Parker's guide.

Thanks. What sort of typical MPG do you get with the 2.5? I'm looking at the auto.

Well I suspect I am a bit too heavy footed because I stuggle to get it over about 38mpg. Can get well over 40 on motorways sticking to the limit though. And yes mine is the auto too.

Has anyone else not noticed this comment?

I wasn't aware the steering had different settings.

It's electrically assisted in some skodas so you can change the assistance level.

No idea if that is case in superb, but i know it isn't in Octy Mk I as a certain master tech confirmed i couldn't make mine steer like a vrs :(

I believe the 1.9 is no longer going into cars on the production line & they are now all 2.0 or 2.5

We have just got a 2.o Superb Elegance & its a stunning car. Play dealers against dealers & you can get some deals, we ended up just under 18000 on the road

The Superb is a luxury car and matches the smoothness of the V6 engines very well. I'd recommend the 2.5 V6.

Steering is normally reasonably light, so maybe there was a duff setting on the one you tried?

I'd agree on the comment about the 2.8 V6 petrol depreciating fast, thats why I bought one (secondhand), it was about

Wrenko, you asked about the sun roof?

It does make a difference, I opened my car the other day when it was hot and thought 'hum hot in here' then I opened a collegue's car and thought 'wow and oven, fetch me some pies'. Don't expect a cold car, but aim the vents at the seats and you'll stop yourself cooking when you get in.

Thanks. Picking up on various comments. Dealer tells me there are 6 settings for the steering with 6 being lightest. 3 is termed "Comfort" and 1 is "GTi !". Also contacted the Daily Telegraph and they confirmed that VAG power steering has 6 settings. Having said that still waiting on dealer to confirm they have actually changed it.

Thanks for the update re the solar roof. Sounds useful. As for the 2.0 replacing 1.9 not heard anything and we need auto anyway. Did also check with AutoExpress re if a facelift was due because of Passat platform change and they said they had heard nothing - not even a "whisper".

got to be the 2.5 tdi imo, absolutely lovely engine, so smooth with the auto box, its like driving a hovercraft (i imagine!)

Its easier to steer than a hovercraft

Latest from dealer is that you can only change the steering settings on the Fabia. They weren't sure so had passed it up to Skoda UK to confirm:(

get a 1.9 PD130 and remap it: more power than the 2.5, more economy, cheaper in the first place.

the 2.5 is older tech so doesn't remap as well...
